“Fringe, liberal kooks? Keep kissing the whip you sheep. The USA is the ONLY developed country without some form of Universal healthcare. I understand you've been a little cog in the rightwing machine so long that for you the respectable centre is just to the left of Hitler's Germany. And THATS why the Dems can't advance like the Republicans. They are looking for a mythical centre that doesn't exist. So they give with mealy-mouthed policies to appease the Right and get support from their corporate donors. Thing is, you CAN'T appease Republicans and corporate donors can only get you so many votes.”

“Well Mr Grim, Huffpost - judging from the comments here I think you're learning why the mainstream news media sticks to infotainment. People don't want real journalism or truth. They want what they believe confirmed. I really applaud the efforts this site is making to promote real journalism, especially with the hiring of Dan Froomkin. But look at the response. I have to say, i think Huxley had it more right than Orwell.”

“I must say, I thought the whole idea of the "having a beer" was cheap political pandering and it would fall flat. But looking at the images its quite a coup. This is like the fourth or fifth time that Obama has tai chi'd potentially damaging rightwing attacks into political victories. I really disagree with a lot of his policies but he has so far proven to be the ultimate foil to the right. He's just killing them. Brings a smile to my face.”

Newsweek: Why Is Washington Ignoring

Newsweek: Why Is Washington Ignoring "Economic Prophet" Stiglitz?

Commented Jul 19, 2009 at 11:20:32 in Business

“"Generally speaking, Stiglitz is for more regulation than we have had."

That's a HUGE generalisation indeed:

"He wrote that the stimulus program was too small to be effective—a criticism that has since swelled into a chorus, though Obama says he's not adding more money. Stiglitz also had called the administration's bailout plan a giveaway to Wall Street, an "ersatz capitalism" that would save the banks' investors and creditors and screw the taxpayers. "

The devil is in the details. You read the financial news earlier this week - "Goldman Sachs makes record profits." Welfare for the rich, seems like "ersatz capitalism" to me. You might not agree with Stiglitz's conclusions on what needs to be done for the economy, but you can't say that he is in any way in sync with what the administration is doing.”

Commented Jul 10, 2009 at 15:05:29 in Politics

“There is a fundamental dishonesty in the criticisms of Palin from these conservative intellectuals. You can trace a direct line from the late 1960's movement conservative era of early Reagan and Nixon to Sarah Palin. She is their logical descendant - a politician thriving off of low brow tribalism. Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Bush 2, Palin - the fuel that has powered the conservative movement since Goldwater's failed election bid has been "us and them".”

Why Girls Like Bad Boys

Commented Jul 08, 2009 at 14:08:49 in Living

“You speak great truth. There aren't just traits they like about bad boys. There are traits they DON'T like about "nice guys". Excessive politeness, a lack of spontaneity, a lack of sexual aggression, timidity in social settings - on a visceral level those traits tend to turn many (not all) women off.

But truthfully these are the fruits of a post-feminist, Oprah-fied world. Generations of men have grown up being told their basic nature is bad. The good news is, nature is nature. It might be buried down deep under the social conditioning but ALL men have an inner bad boy in them. They just need to set it free and stop apologising for being what they are.”

“"With all the people I have met in my life, I have met about an equal number of bigots in both black/white communities."

I agree with that. But systemic racism is to me a bigger problem than basic racism. When I have trouble getting a job, a place to live and can't shop without being harassed to me its a bigger problem than someone just not liking me because of my race. The latter we all have to deal with, the former is a bigger problem for some groups than they are for others.

And I love Michael Jackson. But its obvious he had serious issues with his own racial identity.”

It has been my experience that when people make statements like yours, they are actually projecting their own issues with racial identity.”

“Sigh. Its "cry wolf" cases like this that make it harder for us to prove just how systematic racism actually is in the US. Lets face it, Michael was highly eccentric and was tarnished by a major scandal. Calling his public detractors racist is just too thin. O'Reilly fans can watch this and say with great comfort that this proves that racism claims are just a figment of black imagination. This kind of interaction is a great gift to racism deniers. Which is sad.

There is a lot of genuine racism in US society. There are a lot better debates to be had about it in front of a Fox viewing audience than this one.”

“While you might find the articles themselves not substantive, the issues certainly are. Human rights, health care, foreign policy in relation to Israel - these are all very important topics. The information in the stories is thin, but frankly I'm beginning to think that's a necessity when covering the Obama administration. The Obama admin is intentionally vague and play it close to the vest on a number of topics. Sometimes its difficult to find out what their policy really is. I think that Rahm Emmanuel healthcare quote in particular could prove to be a very important scoop.
