What Happened to the Promise of 16,000 Peace Corps Volunteers by 2011?

“They are just repeating something they heard somewhere. A PCV will show people how to dig a well and work alongside them. They also train people to go over to the next village and do the same thing. But they don't go over to replace locally available labor, and they don't give away stuff. Their job is to share their knowledge and expertise with the people in the community they live in for two years, to help their adopted community to understand Americans and to bring back their own overseas experience and understanding. It's not just the most cost-effective jobs program out there for college grads, it is a great deal for the volunteers themselves. You get to skip a bad job market for two years and come back with some very enviable job experience. And you get paid to travel to places where most Americans will never get to see.”

“I hope this brings about a ton responses to bad critics.
A bad review can ruin a movie. It takes the critic an hour to write the review.
It takes the filmmakers with a cast and crew of hundreds, years to make a movie.
Tens to hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on it.
And lazy and inaccurate reviewers with their own agendas can kill a great film.”

The Striking Obama Record

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 11:53:15 in Politics

“You are correct. Most people do not understand how close to the abyss we were last winter.
President Obama put the brakes on a terrible situation. And he did with very little wiggle room.
George W. handed the nation and Obama a big steaming pile of sh*t.

Every economist said that employment would be the lagging indicator of recovery and it's true.
At least not every company is failing now.

Now we have to rebuild with strong controls on the banking sector in place.
Now we have to transition to better health care system that will cost our nation less and cover more.
Now we have to transition to a green economy.
All of these things affect our security. It would have been easier to transition to these things when Bill Clinton left office and left us with a strong economy and little debt but Obama is doing these things with
none of those positives. It is a remarkable job he is doing as well as he is.”

Men Aren't All That Happy Either

Commented Oct 20, 2009 at 11:23:51 in Living

“About the only people I know who are regularly happy, men or women are people who have essentially dropped out of life. By that, I mean simplify and move out to the country, no computers,.cell phones, etc.
They're not making much money, they're not keeping up on the day to day of politics, but they're happy.

While I'm an information/ political junkie, this concept has some appeal to me.
I have passed the subject by my wife a few times, and she smiles and says yes, we should do that.
But we don't.
it's back to the rat race.”

bakuca replied on Oct 20, 2009 at 16:32:28

“I agree that dropping out is important. I think that many people in our culture are unhappy because we've all been sold a bill of goods about how to live. We're bombarded by hundreds of messages each day persuading us that we'll be accepted, successful, and happy if we just.... (fill in the blank). The minds behind these messages have their own agendas and those agendas have nothing to do with our happiness.

Dropping out requires courage and creativity. Part of rebelling is finding yourself, using your own voice and becoming a social critic. The more the merrier! Wouldn't it be nice to see a cultural Renaissance based on rebellion and individuals choosing to go in new, more Earth-friendly directions.”

Artos replied on Oct 20, 2009 at 12:52:29

Of course, he was trying to get the story out ahead of the media and didn't voluntarily do it, but, nevertheless, it sounded straightforward enough and that he took responsibility for his actions as a whole without getting into specifics.”

What's Happening To Women's Happiness?

Commented Sep 17, 2009 at 10:08:40 in Living

“I am the youngest of three. I'm 47. My mother raised the first two traditionally. But when I turned ten, she taught me how to do laundry, make dinner and clean and then she away to college. I never felt neglected or unloved. My father, a type A successful business executive was super supportive of my mother.
I never saw downsides to modern feminism in our family.
I'm married and have three children. My wife has a rockin' career. I have a small business with flexible hours that allows me time to raise our children. Everyone is happy and relatively stress free.
It takes two to have a successful marriage. All things about the marriage should be worked out before you get married.”

tiamarie replied on Sep 19, 2009 at 00:19:14

“Your idea that things should be worked out before marriage is spot on! I believe that's the biggest problem with unhappy women. They plan so long for the romantic wedding, they don't think of the work involved in the marriage. In their minds, the babies are always cute, perfectly healthy and never cry or spit up, the hubby will always work and provide, be the perfect lover and everyone and everything will smell good 24/7. Then reality intrudes and their unhappiness begins, but the women soldier on and become martyrs/victims, wallowing in self pity that their lives aren't what they dreamed they'd be.

Reminds me of that old joke: "Hey doc, it hurts when I do that." Doc says: "Then don't do that!"

Merckx, you sound like you have it together and it works for you. Good on ya'!”

Remembering the Nazi-Soviet Pact After Seventy Years

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 14:05:07 in Home

“In addition to fighting and winning the war in the Pacific, The U.S. entering France in 1944 with the Brits, and also from the south through Africa then Italy, split the German's defenses.
Germany could not just fight Russia. It is overly simplistic to say Russia won WWII.
It took two great nations with the help of England and a few more to beat Axis of evil in WWII.”

ModernTimes1 replied on Aug 25, 2009 at 16:06:17

“"It is overly simplistic to say Russia won WWII."
Not it is not.

As far the war with Germany in Europe U.S and UK provided an assist, the slam dunk was delivered by the Soviet Army.

Allies did not invade the continent (despite urgent pleas from Stalin) until Germany was sufficiently weakened by the Soviets.
The war against Germany was won at Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk. If it weren't for these three victories, Brits and Americans wouldn't dare to stir from their island .

Think about that.”
