Can the Obama White House Course-Correct in Time to Avoid Hitting the 2010 Iceberg?

Commented Dec 14, 2009 at 20:12:40 in Politics

“I agree with your assessment of Summers, but I don't think he's the only bad influence in the WH. I also think it's true that getting a health care bill passed now is not going to matter. It's hard to believe we're already talking about how disillusioned we are with this administration. I knew Rush wanted Obama to fail; I didn't know Obama wanted Obama to fail.”

Can the Obama White House Course-Correct in Time to Avoid Hitting the 2010 Iceberg?

Commented Dec 14, 2009 at 20:02:43 in Politics

“More likely a lot of Democrats will not bother to vote. Republicans have some awful ideas, but at least we know what to expect. Democrats get us to believe they're on our side until they get sworn in. But a third party? There would still be a need for 60 votes. That's hard enough as it is. I don't know what the solution is, but it's obvious our system is broken.”

Knocking Down The Biggest Excuse For The Bailout

Commented Nov 26, 2009 at 05:00:03 in Politics

“I was thinking the same thing. But it's also true that Obama's economic team is packed with people who believe strongly in the deregulations for Wall St. that caused the mess. What is somebody like Robert Rubin doing advising this president? What is he doing out of jail, for that matter? Obama's not making it easy to stay with him.”

Get Ready for the Obama/GOP Alliance

Commented Nov 26, 2009 at 04:19:01 in Politics

“I feel the same. It's getting harder and harder to defend him. And on the right we have a joke, Palin, getting taken seriously by more people, at least in part because Obama is not delivering on many of his promises. Emotions always run strong during bad economic times, and Obama could be doing a lot more to keep it from tilting completely to the right. I hope he takes that flock down, as you say.”

“YOu sound a little too hopeful, Arianna.
I understnd what your saying, but:
As a white 49 year old male who's been unemployed for several months:
I don't think you and your demo group understand what it means to have to tell your landlord you don't have the rent this month. and could he please wait.
I don't think you really undersand what it feel like to tell your ensurer that you don't think you can make the payments this month.
It is not fun being poor these days.”

Over one thousand people died during Katrina and Arianna's use of Katrina to attack Summers and Geithner is pretty disgusting. I'm not a financial expert, but I do know that job creation lags after any recession and that as bad as things are now the economy is still currently recovering faster then the last two recessions which were not nearly as bad as this one.”

“Sometimes I think Arianna's last good idea was HP. :-)

What really worries me Mij13, is that high unemployment is going to be with us a long time. It takes time to create the 'green' industries that are supposed to be the savior of national employment. It takes sensible regulations and prohibitions against outsourcing and a host of other things as well.

When you consider how much money we have given to the banks & AIG...wouldn't it have been better to give it to the citizen consumers?”

Sunday Roundup

Commented Nov 22, 2009 at 07:40:52 in Media

“There seems to be an obsession among people on the right with protecting free speech for people like Beck and Palin. But don't we also have the right to speak out when someone is spreading lies and fearmongering? I too wish everyone would just ignore him, but I have to agree he's dangerous. He deserves to be mocked more than anything, and Jon Stewart and a few others have let us see the real Glen Beck.”

TJHOPE replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 08:50:29

“I've always felt that the proper response to Beck, Palin, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Limbaugh, Savage,et al is to mock them. Mercilessly. Hold them up to public ridicule. Getting angry only validates them. They are bizzare in the same way that carnival side-shows are. So, "Step right up".”

RepugsOut08 replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 08:17:21

“I agree. Let's face it. People like Beck have no core decency. Like a televangelist, Beck has found an audience that is making him wealthy. He knows their buttons, and he hears 'cha ching' everytime he pushes them.
Beck is the epitome of everything that is wrong in this greed-obsessed nation we all want to still believe in.
Mocking Beck, and showing him for the charlatan he truly is, is one of the most patriotic things anyone can do for their country right now.”

The Third Annual Huffington Post "Tell Us What You're Cooking For Thanksgiving This Year That You Didn't Cook Last Year"

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 17:08:45 in Style

“Fig and Anise stuffing.
Four cups of bread crumbs. (I use good French bread and slice it and dry it out in the oven set at 250 for an hour, then chop into cubes or run through food processor.)
One cup of butter.
One large brown onion, finely chopped.
1 cup of dried figs, chopped fine and loosely packed.
One half tbsp. dried anise, or three tbsp fresh, finely chopped.
Two and a half cups chicken broth, either canned or homemade.
One half tbsp. kosher salt.

Melt butter in large at skillet and sauté onion at med. high heat until translucent, 8 - 10 mins.
Add figs and sauté another minute.
Reduce heat to low and add bread crumbs and mix well.
Add anise and mix well, then sauté mixture for a couple more minutes.
Add broth a little at a time, mixing and combining ingredients well. Use as much as needed to get the consistency you want. It should not be mushy, but have a sturdy yet moist texture.
Transfer to baking dish a half hour before serving and bake at 350 until lightly browned on top.

Note: The friend who gave me this recipe says it also works very well with a cup of chopped apples added with the figs.”

Obama, Democrats Face Liberal Fundraising Boycott

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 07:15:04 in Politics

“I hear you. It's really too bad to see this happen, especially since it's so unnecessary. DADT could be ended tomorrow - Obama could put a freeze on discharging any more soldiers until the law is changed - and the vast majority of American would be behind him. If that were the only issue where there's been little or no effort being made, he might be losing only a small number of voters. But it's starting to seem that Obama wants exactly what Rush wants - to see Obama fail.”

Is the President Really in Charge?

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 01:03:01 in Politics

“I'm not someone who's influenced much by all the emotional hype this president has gotten. In fact, I'm now at the point of being turned off by it. (If I see one more story here about what an attractive couple the Obamas are I think I'll puke. And before anyone gets mad, yes, they are very attractive. I'm just getting sick of hearing about that after being unemployed for eight months.)
My gut feeling about Barack Obama is that he is an honorable man who honestly wants to do right by this country. I think Ms. Reardon's question is a very good one. So is yours. If he's not in charge, then we have a much bigger problem on our hands. If he is a one termer, what is the alternative? What if it doesn't matter whom we elect?”

Is the President Really in Charge?

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 00:45:29 in Politics

“Ms. Reardon is saying exactly what I've suspected for a while now. I heard Naomi Klein interview Micheal Moore a few weeks ago, and ask him why he thinks Obama has people like Geithner, Summers et all, and neither of them could come up with anything more plausible than "maybe he wants to get the people who made this mess to clean it up themselves." They both agreed that sounded naive, but it was better than my idea. I think Obama's hands are tied. I would love to know what happened with the Dems to make them suddenly pass that original TARP bill just before the election. In Moore's movie it seemed to be the backroom deal of all backroom deals.”

SCrae replied on Nov 04, 2009 at 01:56:38

“Neither Geithner or Summers have worked at Goldman's. That seems to be the litmus test at this site. Summers was a professor most of his life. He worked at a hedge fund for 3 yrs and it wasn't Goldman's. That's it. Geithner has worked for the government in Treas, worked as an Ambassoder overseas, worked on foreign bank collapses. He has never worked for a Wall St bank. What is your problem with him other than he has a communication problem??”

“Oh please. The only trend under Obama is toward a happy middle class. If you don't see that, you're not paying attention. The trend toward a two class America was under BUSH. Period.

Read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine", if you want to know what the "wealthy class" wants to
do.

Your children will only be ashamed if they vote to keep the "patriots" in power. Sarah Palin and friends. The days of "conservatism" are over. Get over it!”

Hegemoneyhoney replied on Nov 02, 2009 at 12:17:54

“Mij13: You have greatly distorted my meaning and my words. Never in my writing, nor in my life, would I ever consider Sarah Palin or the likes of her a patriot so your twisting of my meaning is profoundly wrong and I resent your distortion. By "patriots" I mean exactly what I said: our brave ancestors who fought a revolution to overthrow the very kind of society that is now firmly entrenched and is destroying this nation! I have no idea what your age or politics are, but I would bet that I have been voting - and working and contributing money and labor - to more genuine progressive candidates and causes than you for much longer than you. Although I would have been happier to see a genuine Democrat win the presidency, I worked for and contributed money to and voted for Obama and I was ecstatic when he won. However, I never join cults of personality and my allegiance is based on what a person actually DOES, not what he/she says or how they smile or how their family dresses and what Obama is DOING is not what I voted for! It has been a serious bait and switch, a betrayal of his supporters and of American prosperity and well being. Were Bush-Cheney worse? I think Bush-Cheney should be on trial for treason! Does that mean Obama is good? No, it does not.”
