Conservatives Terrified of Bringing Terrorists to Justice

“I seem to recall one of those so-called 'terrorists' (a nice catch-all group which includes captured children and teenage girls) was an innocent Canadian businessman who was tortured for a year in a Syrian jail at the U.S. Are you saying that innocent Canadian businessman should have been kept locked up forever without recourse to the law? I recall the former commandant of GITMO, in a candid moment, saying half the people being held had done nothing. Are you suggesting locking them up forever too?”
Conservatives Terrified of Bringing Terrorists to Justice
Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 10:25:14 in Politics
“It must be apparent that the Right was never particularly interested in 'justice'. It was only interested in 'revenge'. The relative guilt of the 'terrorists' in-hand is hardly relevant to them, they are set on punishing *groups of people*, not individuals. Their primary fear is that the courts will interpose itself between them and the objects of their wrath. This is the same mindset that caused Southern Democrat to flee the party for the GOP when the federal government began enforcing ant-lynching laws. Let's be clear that this is what we're talking about. They want to torture and kill whom they please for revenge. They wanted to do it in the deep south in the '40s, they want to do it now.”

We are not set on punishing "groups of people". You are missing the point here. KSM is in trial for the attacks on 9/11. This is not some made up story of terror. It happened and if you really want justice, these people who admitted and owned the 9/11 attacks should be punished.”

“The really disturbing aspect is even the most optimistic economist pundit doesn't seem to have a clue about how to keep the average American working man from starving. Their formulas and fantasies seem to mainly involve keeping financiers in business, not laborers. Thier most common advice? Get a college education and escape to the upper middle class - as though it was remotely possible *everybody* could have the same middle-management insurance company job. Perhaps the relative good time of the 50-80s was the anomaly, perhaps the common working man can look forward to a replay of the 1930s into the foreseeable future.”
Jannsmoor replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 14:33:57
“Part of the problem is that since 1980 our government has been feeding us a diet of lower taxes for the rich results in more jobs. The reality, that rich people don't really want to create jobs but just want to invest with a nice return, is not a part of the dialogue. If you dare to bring it up you're engaging in "class warfare." Of course, we've been involved in "class warfare" since 1980, and the richest class has won that war.”

“This report seems to be mirroring an earlier report advising the same course for men's prostate treatments. That report had stated bluntly that treatments based on not-totally-reliable exams were doing more harm to far more people than the few they were was saving. The same argument that's being presented here for breast exams. So its an equal-opportunity argument.
I'm reminded of someone reporting that the number of medical procedures done in an area often has less to do with the frequency of need and more with the number of specialists. Some areas had a spike in appendix operations, some had a spike in root canals, some had a lot of hysterectomies, or full-body CT scans. What may have pushed the annual mamogram may simply be doctors having to pay for the equipment!”

Politicians have cranked out these autobiographies since the days of Caesar to boost their public image. NONE of which apparently applies to Palin's book, which seems to be shrill and egotistical, even after being filtered through her ghostwriter. Its on par with the worst celebrity biographies.”

Don't Forget To Have Kids
Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 13:37:51 in Living
“A 'traditional' large family would most often involve the wife having twelve kids with seven of them dying of smallpox before the age of nine. Or every fifty or sixty years a good 20% of the male population being butchered in a war with its neighbors. Or natural disasters largely depopulating the countryside for new generations to fill back up. Large families without the old-style checks on population is unsustainable. That's why 'feminism' was born. Feminism as a movement largely involved women taking control of their own biological destiny.”

“I must admit I do feel sorry for the poor cow. Nobody's going to keep them around as pets after they lose their utility. Vegetarianism ultimately dooms the cow species to extinction. Ten thousand years ago cattle and people made a tacit deal. We would help the species spread around the globe, becoming the most populous and widespread ungulate in history. In return they would be docile and tasty. Roughly the same deal we've made with corporations - they pay make us propserous, in return we remain docile and tasty.”
