Rachel,
I make a point to watch your show every night because I believe you are smart, well researched, and you bring a fresh perspective to the issues.

How do you view the Bible? In your view, does the Bible have absolute authority? Do you believe the inerrancy of scripture? Because Rick Warren does. And Romans chapter 1 means a lot to him. He would consider it his road map or his authority. Higher than government authority. According to Romans 1:26-27, homosexuality is not natural. Men having sexual relationship with men and woman having sexual relationship with woman is not the original intent or purpose for sex.

Why does this matter? Because sex was created by God for the context of marriage. According to the Bible (1 Cor 6:9-10), any sex outside of marriage is wrong (sin) in God eyes. If the normal institute of
marriage (Genesis 1:22-24) is between a man and woman, then that excludes sex between woman and woman.

I know this is personal for you!

This is the background that you may have heard before, but when Rick Warren said he doesn't approve of marriage between older man and children and brother and sister, and woman and woman. His ultimate authority for making that declaration is his view of the Holy Bible. He doesn't care what we think! We should understand it and present his view accurately and fairly but we don't have to believe it!

You are kidding, right?

The Constitution has absolute authority.

The Bible, Wagner's Ring trilogy and Gone with the Wind are cultural fiction. They have no authority in law at all.”

Nobody knows anything about that fact because everybody turns and looks the other way. It's a profound state of willful ignorance.”

The point in my email to Rachel was intellectual humility! We live in a culture that has people in it that think and believe differently. We should try to find common ground so we can make this place a better place. This is why I love Obama! To understand the other side is a powerful thing!

“That is not a fair interpretation of that scripture you used. But I don't think you were trying to be fair. You were trying to be funny. I understand.

God is not againt money or rich people. He is against the control (love, greed) the money may have over peoples lives. If a rich person is generous with his money and he gives from his heart, then that pleases God!

A real born again Christian doesn't judge. God judges, that is His territory! A real Christians life is to submit to God's will and to glorify God by doing good towards others. Remember, you can do good towards others and not agree with what they believe.

Don't focus on the false hypocrites, they will lead you to destruction. Focus on the truth and the redemption of our own sin! (John 14:6 & Rom 10:9)

Be encouraged!”

“You missed the point. People think different than you. And that is a good thing. It would be wise and mature to try to understand the perspective of those who think different. Obama is a master at this. This is why I love him. "Out of Many, One".

As far as the Bible, You have to treat the Bible like any historical book you read to do your research. Peter records in his historical letter to Christians in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia that "no prophesy of scripture (Bible) is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." (2 Peter 1:20-21). So Rick Warren believes that the Bible comes directly from God. And God has the supernatural power to override man's evil intentions when He wants to as man writes the words.

This is what makes America Beautiful!

Be encouraged!”

“You're kidding, right! First , we do have a separation of church and state in this country. Warren can "personally" believe what his faith tells him, he doesn't have the right to force it onto other people. There are equal numbers of theologians who disagree with him, most notably Rev. Joseph Lowry, who'll giv Obams benediction. If sex outside of marriage is a "sin", why not make it illegal. Ley's pass a constitutional amendment to criminalize sex outside of marriage. This would be equally as ridiculous as the arguments you make towards gay marriage. As an African American I am deeply offended by these arguments supported by the bible. The bible was used to support slavery and a ban on interracial marriage in this country based on racial bigotry disguised as moral biblical principles.

Should parents be allowed to stone their child to death for disobience do people who eat shellfish commit a sin, or should men be allowed to have 200 wives, as Abraham did in the bible. These things in the 21st century would be viewed as ludicrous. Here's a question for Evangelicals, have you even read the bible? Do you think any civilized society should be held to the totality of biblical mandates. Oh and by the way, marriage in biblical times was a bargain between to kings or lords to ensure wealth transfers. Women were sold into marriage by their fathers to gain wealth from wealthy men. Should this be allowed today as well?”

hopefullee replied on Dec 19, 2008 at 12:44:54

“It seems that you are holding Warren to a higher standard than he holds himself. When he supported Prop 8, I don't believe for a second that he really thought that "being gay" would be taught in schools, that preachers would be prosecuted for "hate speech", or that marriage was defined as being between one man and one woman for the last 5000 years. If he really saw the bible as the ultimate authority, he would not have chosen "bear false witness against his neighbors". It seems that the Bible is only his "ultimate authority" until it gets in the way of his agenda.”

onenation replied on Dec 19, 2008 at 12:31:18

“So the Rev's view of the Bible is the support for his position. A bit circular? What are his views on the stoning issue? Of course, we no longer interpret the Bible by "The words, acts and life of Jesus". That got crushed by the Neo Southern Baptists. So Ricky's word is now THE word. Oops, I thought "...And the Word was made ... " on Christmas.”

“Bible: Etymology:
Middle English, from Old French, from Medieval Latin 'biblia', from Greek, plural of 'biblion'
'book', diminutive of 'byblos' papyrus, 'book', from 'Byblos', ancient Phoenician city from
which papyrus was exported. (Merriam-Webster)

In other words, the Bible is just another book (these days), although it was arguably the first one ever.”

“I'm no biblical scholar, but doesn't it say in there somewhere (perhaps many times) 'Love one another"? I've heard it does. Note that it doesn't say "men love only women; women love only men" It just says 'love one another' or something close to that.”

“Sex was not created by G.o.d. for the context of marriage (no telling what that is supposed to mean). Sexual reproduction is a method for recombining genetic material through union of gametes. It is practiced by a large number of organisms on Earth without any ritualistic context such as marriage.

Humanity fails when religion (and ig.nor.ance) triumphs.”

deadelephant2 replied on Dec 19, 2008 at 12:55:12

“Um, O.K. Then judging by this incredibly stupid and fallacious argument, wouldn't it have simply been easier for God to just make the parts not work at all UNLESS you were in a marriage? Guess that means NOTHING else in the animal kingdom would reproduce then. This fits right in to the MANMADE BS about "original sin" which can be interpreted as: "O.K., you're born sinners, but I have the solution! Jesus Christ! Now give me money."”

“The Bible is Inspired by God! You need to read the Bible in its original context to understand its meaning. You can't approach the Bible with a bias. The Bible has to change the reader, not the reader change the Bible.”

MoeB replied on Dec 19, 2008 at 12:24:40

“That's propaganda, meant to eliminate any biblical dissent...

'oh, if you don't believe the bible the way I do, it's simply because you aren't applying yourself, or you approached it wrong!'. That's a weak justification.

Inspirational writers/speakers use that same argument. 'Well, if my book didn't change your life, it's because you were unwilling to let the words speak to you'. Or 'you approached it with a closed mind'.

Further, if you REALLY approached the bible with "no bias", then you would neither believe it nor disbelieve it initially. And I honestly think that if you weren't biased, that one would generally conclude that the bible, while a nice BOOK to use as a source of inspiration on how to lead YOUR life, is not divinely inspired.”

aftershock replied on Dec 19, 2008 at 12:20:26

“The Bible is written by man, therefore it can not, according to God's word, be infallible. Man is inherently fallible as a result of original sin, therefore, we cannot ascertain that the Bible is a 100% accurate representation of God's will. For example, polygamy is not condemned and practiced by many in the Bible. Would you, through your reading of the Bible, think polygamy is God's will? Likewise slavery receives Biblical approval, would you think that God's will? Furthermore, the Bible is littered with contradictions and inaccuracies. And I would doubt you've read the Bible in it's original context unless you actually speak Hebrew and Greek. If you do though, you'd realize the version most read isn't even an accurate representation of the original. Certain words don't translate exactly, some are mistranslated, etc.”
