Glenn Beck: 'African-American Is A Bogus, PC, Made-Up Term... Not A Race'

“LOL...oh, well then thanks for not ripping apart my rebuttal!! I am certainly no expert in the field...just have retained a little bit of information I had when I wrote on this back in college.

We both agree that it's an evolutionary thing...my only SMALL beef was about "race". I mean, if there is a such thing, it would've been created by differences in climate and where we lived (right?-please correct me if I'm off base-I won't be offended!)...which one could assume that blacks in this country were a different "race" than sub-saharan Africans, could they not?”

“What's the 'correct' term then? Most ethnologists say there is no "race"...or at least it's all a made up social classification. In any event, they're all labels...so I'm not sure why he's all upset that some blacks refer to themselves as "african-american". I mean, "white" is not a race either, so where was his rant on that? It's also a "bogus, pc, made-up term", is it not?

Further, "american" is not a race, or even a country.”

“I completely get your point, but ultimately, what difference does it make if someone chooses to refer to themselves as "african-american", "black", "negroid", or anything else?”

Dozer255 replied on Jan 08, 2010 at 12:07:38

“I don't care what someone calls themselves, but if you are an American and want to end the fooleshness of separating us into neat little groups then all you need to refer to yourself is an American.”

“thanks for asking. Consider the history of the USA.
Races were categorized by white people for various reasons.
Now this white man is wonderingwhy, He should ask his forefathers.

Consider the reason the "forefathers" decided to categorize
people born and raised in the US as anything other that just
what they are Americans and you will undoubtedly come to the
conclusion that it was to divide and segrate whole groups of people
for nefarious reasons.

This is actually a law in the US. If you are born with black blood(?)
then you are considered black. Because the slave owners were raping
the black women and the babies and some looked white, they declared
that if the mother was black then so is the baby. Some used to consider
the race of the father, but could not justify the color of the baby without
admitting to the crime of rape and infidelity. Good white men did not do that.”

“I don't have a problem with labels, as I tend to treat them for what they are...labels...which does serve a purpose, as it helps us categorize things, which our brains need to do. It's what people ASSUME about labels that bothers me.

But to your evolutionary point...take sickle cells, for example. They are a basic defense against malaria, which is prevelant in many African nations. The sickle cell formation somehow helps fight, or resist, malaria, which is why you find many blacks in this country have sickle cell TRAITS. However, since malaria is not really an issue in this country, you see far less instances of sickle cell anemia than you do with Africans.”

Commented Jan 08, 2010 at 11:34:18 in Media

“I think the development of sickle cells has more to do with geography and environment than it is simply an attribute of race. For instance, did you know that the formation of sickle cells helps resist malaria? Given that malaria is a major problem in most african nations, this makes sense. It is not such a problem in European nations, and thus they didn't need to adapt. Blacks in this country have a much lower rate of sickle cell anemia due to the fact that there aren't huge outbreaks of malaria here.”

ladyfractal replied on Jan 08, 2010 at 11:42:44

“Moe:

Actually you are making my point FOR me. My whole point about sickle cell is that it is an evolutionary adaptation to the presence of the plasmodium bacteria which causes malaria. Those people where malaria is endemic (such as sub-Saharan Africa--follow me here) developed an allele that confers some resistance to the disease.

All of the people who are recently (say less than 5,000 years) from those regions of sub-Saharan Africa all comprise a genetic population MORE CLOSELY related to one another than all those who come from, say, the Eastern part of Eurasia.

Blacks here have a much lower rate of sickle cell anemia because those who DO have it are dying out because here it confers NO adaptive benefit while in Africa it *still* confers an adaptive benefit.

I'm very well aware of this because evolutionary genetics is what I *do*.

Cheers
LF”

And I love the "real black people" bit. Nice touch...as if those not on the panel are somehow 'fake' black people.”

It's simply FACTUAL to point out that these values had to be fought for...trying to sweep the ugly parts of history under the rug does none of us any good...just as it does no good to only focus on the ugly parts without giving credit to those who fought to change things.”

“You know what I fear more than federal control of the media? Corporate control of the media. Look around. Our media outlets have become less about providing factual information and more about sensational stories and opinions that are presented as "facts". I'm not sure how you can worry about one but not the other. BOTH can present real issues for the citizenry.

And what legislation is being called for that would limit certain people's rights?

And the government is NOT disarming the populace. CLEARLY. It seems every other day some yahoo is out shooting up office buildings and the such. Further, the opposition hasn't been silenced, and is not going to be.

We shouldn't allow ourselves to be governed by paranoia.”

“The goal of taxes is to raise money. If you eliminate federal income tax, but increase sales tax, you still end up paying taxes. I have no problem with taxes, as I feel they are NECESSARY for our society to function the way that it does. My problem is WASTED tax dollars, and MISUSED tax dollars.

And I think we have enough on our plates right now outside of worrying about what *might* *maybe*, *possibly* happen at some point in the future. I figure if you have tons of time to be paranoid about things that haven't even happened, then things must be going well for you.”

But I do love the assumption that if a black person refers to themselves as "african-american", they somehow aren't able to think for themselves...if only we could be lead by the nose by the conservative 'do-no-gooders', we'd be much better off.”

“Capitalism, in it's purest form, would LOVE these times. Desperate people means that they'll work for beans just to provide basic needs for their families. So good-bye minimum wage, 40 hour work weeks, paid vacation/sick time, merit pay (no need to do that since they can just train someone else at the bare minimum), worker empowerment (without any regulations imposed by the government, you can kiss unions good-bye). The list continues. But yea, yea, sure, capitalism would be GRAND for about 5% of this country. The rest would be living in poverty. There'd be no price controls (that the market didn't set), and if you think corporations run this country now...

Please see: Chile, Panama, Phillipines, Indonesia, Brazil (to a lesser degree), and other nations as examples of what happens when 'pure unfettered capitalism' is allowed to take hold.”

“Actually, most blacks SUPPORTED Hillary originally, even after Obama dropped his name into the presidential hat. We liked what Obama had to say (once we got wind of who he was), so we voted for him. Not sure where the "racism" comes into play.

Secondly, blacks, more than any other race in this country, has shown that we'll vote for white candidates, even when we have other alternatives. J. Jackson ran twice for president and he certainly didn't carry the percentage of black voters that Obama did. Not even close.”

“What "scope" of government? Does that mean you don't want to pay taxes (or as you all call it, "stealing")???

And what individual liberties have been taken away from you since this administration started?

What you all have been stating you're fearful of hasn't even happened. So your "reasons" aren't really reasons, they're end results. So I ask, what do you all have against this president? What "rights" of yours has he taken away that you all need us to return to what the 'forefathers intended'??? And what does that MEAN, exactly? You all are aware that there is a MAJORITY of the population who have NO want or desire for things to be the way 'they used to be'.”

“The two things I am most afraid of are federal control of the media and disarmament of the civilian population, both of which have been taking place to some extent or another for nearly a century.

Once the federal government controls the media, it controls the exchange of ideas. Once the federal government controls the exchange of ideas, it inadvertently controls thought. You may have heard some people calling for legislation that would limit the first amendment rights of certain individuals.

Once the federal government disarms the population, the citizenry becomes livestock. The first two things every tyrannical dictator that has ever existed has ever done is silence his opposition and then disarm them.”

poseA replied on Jan 07, 2010 at 19:25:18

“I am opposed to federal income tax, which is a tax on production. An increased sales tax would be more effective. This would make it far more difficult for people to evade taxes, but it would also allow people to be more cognizant of how much they were actually contributing in taxes. Furthermore, people would not be forced to pay taxes, if they were wiling and capable of producing some of their own goods with raw materials. This would actually be easier, if people had more of their gross income to invest in private ventures.

No individual liberties have been taken away and what we are fearful of has not occurred. However, once what we fear does occur there will be no stopping it without violence. This is always the case with tyranny.”
