Church and State in JFK's America

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 12:15:56 in Politics

“I'll tell you what happened to the America J. F .Kennedy knew. Kennedy did not do anything in his presidency; he was killed. He's elated because of his death. America, unfortunately, is way too religious. The separation of state and church will always be "on the rocks."

The Pilgrims' DNA is engraved in America.”

hershala replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 13:57:00

“JFK is elated because of his death? What are you talking about? I agree that America is way to religious in the sense that many religious people think their religion should be codified. I don't care what anyone believes, though it would be nice to see some of them live by their religion, but I should not be bound legally by their religion. IF they want to declare abortion is wrong fine, but my actions should not be bound by their theology.
As for the Pilgrims DNA being bound in America, I doubt it. We haven't gotten to the stage of killing those who disagree with our theology like the pilgrims did to many and attempted to do to Roger Williams. The pilgrims were every bit as intolerent of differing religions as the churches they fled in England. The notion that in the US we must dance to someone elses faith is abhorrent.”

lldem1 replied on Oct 28, 2009 at 11:28:38

“Sure. If you don't have an education, get one. If you have one, get a job. If you can't find a job then start your own business. Get out and work. Only 15% of Americans don't have health insurance and most of those either don't want it, don't need it, or are on some type of tax-based health care like state Medicaid. There is a minority that want it but can't afford. Work two jobs. Do something with your life.”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 10, 2009 at 10:26:27 in Politics

“I think the American people are beginning to get frustrated with speeches. Action, deeds. Enough with words!”

amistad replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 10:53:51

“Yes! Best not to talk! That way Americans wouldn't have to listen. And oh, that means that Americans wouldn't have a clue as to what is going on! Oh wait...you already don't have a clue! No wonder you don't like to hear what the President has to say!

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 10, 2009 at 10:10:18 in Politics

“Ok, no insults.

There are many countries which uses gays in the military. They do not undermine the military. That's a fact. Get it? Gay Americans are no different. They are human beings like all of us. They behave the same etc. There is no difference. Heterosexuals = homosexuals; some good, some bad, we are all the same.

May Obama get off his ass and not one more speech. Damn! Hillary was right!”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 10, 2009 at 10:05:22 in Politics

“I absolutely don't want to hear one more damn speech by Obama. I want him to get off his ass and start working to advance "all the change that we can believe in." The message that this Noble prize awarded to him, tells us that he needs to make the changes NOW! He will not have a majority soon; that is an urgency. To hell with the speeches! The speeches may feed the spirit for a little while, but they soon turn stale and there is really hunger for the change promised.

Not one more word from Obama. Deeds!”

lexkw replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 11:55:17

“Sorry to disappoint you, but all Obama did before he was elected was make speeches. He was never a leader in 'doing' anything. Making speeches is his forte. That's what he does. That's what he will continue to do.”

hark replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 11:12:15

“That is an important point, that the window to change will close in November 2010 unless he has converted his rhetoric into meaningful deeds. The left is going to sit home, and the Republicans are becoming energized with their hatred of government, Democrats, Obama and liberals.

Seems to me gay civil rights is an easy one to launch. A charge to repeal DOMA and DADT, and a call to the states to legalize gay marriage.

Why hasn't he done so already? You might argue that health care is a greater crisis, but certainly Congress can work on more than one bill at a time. Two explosive issues might be a test for the media, but not for the government.

I'm bewildered by his lack of action so far. Perhaps he doesn't believe in full civil rights for gays. Certainly we should know after the speech, by how convoluted and nuanced his support for their cause (and our cause) is expressed.”

KofTX replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 11:06:00

“Then lobby Congress to grant the President absolute power so that he can legislate and sign into law what you want.....

Oh, that's right. You'd be back at square one: GETTING CONGRESS TO PASS THE LAWS THAT YOU WANT.

Why can't some people get that the President can't do everything by himself?!?”

amistad replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 11:04:14

“Yes! Best not to say nothing! That way Americans will stay ign0rant like you!”

KofTX replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 10:41:59

Your frustration is totally misplaced...Study the branches of government and what Congress is supposed to do and what the Executive branch is supposed to do.”

Second: I voted for Obama with pain in my heart. After 48 years of living in the U.S., I became a citizen because I wanted to be able to vote for you. Yes, it was really painful and sad for me.

Third: I love your intelligence and wish you much success in helping our country. You make women proud and you make AMerica proud.”

Annette replied on Aug 28, 2008 at 22:52:41

“If Hillary Clinton is not a person you can follow, why vote for her. She has said loud and clear that McCain would be a disaster, she is willing to work for Obama because she believes he is much better than McCain and she knows both of them.
You say it would kill you??? Why you don't like equal pay for women. You want more judges like Scalia on the bench a corporate shill. You want more jobs sent overseas with assistance from the taxpayers who are being asked to pay taxes to get fired, Just don't stop McCain. You want more taxes for yourself while McCain cuts taxes for Chevron.

I hate to say this, it isn't about you, it is about the country. If your sensitivites cannot be set aside for the good of the country you are a sorry person indeed.

I doubt you were a Clinton supporter. Clinton is a brave woman who stood up and begged her supporters to vote for Obama, a lot harder for her than your piddling notion that your heart would stop if you voted for Obama. I suspect you are a McCain troll attempting to pretend that you are just too sensitive to be an American.”

olivia replied on Aug 28, 2008 at 22:04:16

“You could always consider it a vote AGAINST the Bush administration.”

snarkopolitan replied on Aug 28, 2008 at 21:59:46

“Guess what? It isn't about YOUR EMOTIONS!!! You're saying you don't care about Hillary's policies enough to do what she did, the adult thing, the patriotic thing. McCain's belligerant foreign policy would have us poised on the brink of a new cold war, AND lie us into another Mid-East war (Iran) AND deny us the healthcare we need, that so many of us who are sick and unemployed can't wait for.
It's going to kill, not metaphorically, but actually, more than a few people if Obama loses. That is why you should suck it up like Hillary did, like Susie did.

I am comforted by the thought you are probably a Republican plant. If not, you're just embarrassing.”
