“Very well said! When I read the title I wasn't sure what to expect from reading this but I am pleasantly surprised. You are so very right, motherhood and parenting is a village and it takes so much work! I don't think that the article portraying attachment parenting as a pros/cons analysis is as fair considering parenting all around is like that. You figure out what works for your family and you adapt it to that. I know many many moms who 'practice' AP and don't cosleep, or don't breastfeed, or work full-time.”

Safe Swaddling: Stopping The 3,000 Infant Sleep Deaths

Commented Nov 1, 2011 at 20:39:25 in Parents

“Cosleeping (bedsharing) when done correctly is known to REDUCE SIDS. Why not teach parents to cosleep/bedshare safely as well as the swaddling method.”

nsewing on Nov 3, 2011 at 11:18:05

“I totally agree. Studies that show bedsharing is dangerous, do not take into account the mothers who drink alcohol or take medication. I shared a bed with both my children when they were babies. In my sleep, I was aware of their breathing patterns and could predict when they were about to wake up. I think this is something that happens naturally and is not an unusual phenomenon. I'm not sure if my sleep was very deep or restful but I don't think I was any more sleep deprived than mothers who had to get out of bed in the middle of the night to feed their babies.”

drkarp on Nov 1, 2011 at 22:07:33

“Hi Morgan,

While co-sleeping (having the baby sleep in a bassinet right next to the parent's bed) has been shown to reduce SIDS/suffocation risk, sharing the bed is a much more murky issue. Most studies show it increases sleep deaths in babies under 3-4 months. Having said that, there are many things one can do to reduce the risk, but why take the risk when you can have the baby right next to you in a safe location?”

janeinmia on Nov 1, 2011 at 22:05:08

“That is absolutely correct and I couldn't agree more -- teach parents the guidelines for safe co-sleeping.”

Orlando Activists Arrested For Feeding Homeless In Defiance Of City Ordinance

“This is in my city!!! And I think it's rediculous, I don't think that feeding the hungry is disruptive, I think the fact that we brag about how great and rich our country is despite all of the people who are hungry and are without the proper means for food should be disruptive.”

Ms Dinah on Jun 13, 2011 at 08:45:36

“I am also from here and I think it is such a double standard the city complains that the homeless cause petty crimes and public urination , and litter, but they completely ignore the fact that almost all the issues are caused by the drunken club goers that pack the area on Friday and Saturday nights. They come downtown and tear the place up in the name of drunken fun. But that is completely overlooked because those middle class white kids are considered customers so they pin the problems on the homeless. It seems fair that if the homeless can't be served within 2 miles City Hall then likewise no bars or clubs should be allowed to serve liquor in that area either....(note I am not actually anti alcohol, or anti bar I am just saying if the City was seriously worried about the litter and disorder then a more effective strategy would be to revoke all the liquor licenses.)”

“Ummm I don't think so. My daughter thrives so well on breastmilk right now and guess what IT'S FREE!!! Other than the 300 extra calories I need a day (small price to pay), she's totally worth it. I don't see this being a great alternative and honestly if I couldn't breastfeed I would seriously look into donor milk over this (at least it's human right? and not contaminated with god-knows what from China.)”

“I'm not in support of the death penalty but I think that companies should be completely responsible for the things they sell. And not just the company name, but individuals within the company, all the way up the chain. Perhaps there would be less cases of widespread recall because someone didn't mix the medicine correctly.”

Pregnant Women Urged To Get Flu Shots

“While that does talk about the effects of seasonal influenza it's more focused on the effects of pandemic influenza on pregnant women. In a pandemic a lot of people are vulnerable because of the fact that no one has immunity”

OrangeLantern on Sep 17, 2010 at 22:22:45

“I'm not sure what you mean. Why do people have more immunity to a disease when it is not a pandemic?”

Sheldon101 on Sep 16, 2010 at 22:14:53

“The chances of your getting the flu will be lower than in a pandemic year (2009) However, if you didn't have the actual 2009 H1N1 flu, that's the one you can catch this year. And that is a flu that is more dangerous for pregnant women and hence their babies than the earlier non-2009 H1N1.”

“For starters, how effective is the flu vaccine? Isn't it only effective against a few select strains, the ones that are expected to be most prevalent. But that doesn't mean you will be exposed to that type of flu strain. Also some of the side effects of getting the vaccine can be flu symptoms, such as a fever and aches. As far as H1N1 is concerned, a friend of my mother's got the H1N1 as prescribed by her OB several weeks before her due date, and she complained of lack of fetal movement a few days after the shot. When she went in they discovered her baby had died in utero, and while there can be many things that could be blamed for this, I find it too suspect that it happened after receiving the shot. I understand what causes flu could have on me while pregnant and on my baby, but I would rather not take the chance in getting a flu shot that could harm my baby when in fact I may not even be exposed to the flu.”

dajmd on Sep 17, 2010 at 19:59:52

“so the flu shot recommended for pregnant women contains an inactivated virus, so you wouldn't get the flu from it. you might have some flu-like symptoms briefly, but certainly not expect the fever, chills, etc.

see also sheldon101's excellent post on the lower rate of miscarriage and improved match.”

Sheldon101 on Sep 16, 2010 at 14:23:27

“Great Match and Lower Rate of Miscarriage
----------------------------------------
CDC has test 1847 strains of 2009 H1N1 against the California strain used last year and in this year's vaccine. Only 7 had results that were less effective. The H3N2 strain is new to this year's vaccine so it should be a great match. This is what you would expect as it takes time for viruses to mutate so vaccines are less effective.

The same influenza B strain is used, but there won't be much of it. The forecast: a great match between the vaccine strains and the infecting strains.

Taiwan reports lower rates of miscarriage amongst women vaccinated against H1N1. This is what you would expect. http://flu.cdc.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=11419&ctNode=1445&mp=171

“My midwife and most doulas and midwives I've talked to (I'm seeing a midwife not an OB for all of my prenatal care) suggest that pregnant women are more likely to be vitamin D deficient and that you take it throughout your pregnancy, usually about 2000 IU per day, which is like 5X what the RDA is. I think you should keep your immune system up and take care of yourself with proper nutrition and staying home whenn you feel ill instead of depending on a vaccine.”

Sheldon101 on Sep 16, 2010 at 20:20:57

“Why not do both? I'm not aware of any research that shows that Vitamin D is made less effective if you get the flu vaccine. Do you know of any?”

“I graduated from a catholic high school a few years ago. The only thing we got other than if we took a class that studied the human reproductive system (A&P), was a woman who came to the school every 3 years and spoke to the girls in the school in the auditorium. Apparantly she traveleved around the country giving this talk to many many students in schools with religious-based education. Her talk consisted of telling us that there are 30 types of STD's and STI's and that women suffer from their effect but men do not, that men just spread them from woman to woman. If we get one of these diseases we will become sterile and may die from their complications. And she concluded by saying that we should stick to abstinence. It was not the best talk as far as "sex-ed" is concerned and this woman seemed to me to be more of an effectively convincing public speaker rather than being accurate. Seeing the look on many girls' faces after the talk you could tell she scared them. I think that was her goal all-along”
