Is This as Good as It Gets From Obama?

“Sorry, Bill. But no amount of energy will get past the brick wall that is Congress. Half of them declared open war on the president. All of them are determined to play party games. And they all owe their allegiance to lobbies instead of listening to anything the citizens need or want. With those odds, Obama could have been the Messiah reincarnated and still have to fight them tooth and nail for the least bit of cooperation.”
The Moral Ferocity of Eating Animals
Commented Nov 01, 2009 at 14:06:01 in Books
“"Wild caught" fish go through a pretty nasty process, too. If you knew how painful it is for them to be yanked out of the water, expose their tender gills to the air and thrown into huge bins on top of each other to either die slowly or be clubbed, would you stop eating salmon or still find yourself "comfortable there"?
No animals, including the author's beloved farmer kind, are treated entirely humanely. To do that, they'd have to be allowed total freedom on the range, be fed more expensive foods, and at the end be brought into a cozy room, cuddled and caressed as they received a local injection to numb the pain and finally a shot to put them to sleep comfortably and permanently. Can you imagine how much a pound of beef would cost?
For the millions who refuse to become vegans there has to be a compromise between humane and supply, between suggesting that they eat less meat and trying to guilt them into eating none, and between campaigning for processing reform and advocating breaking into plants go get evidence and ruin businesses.”

“The psych eval is very common and not necessarily part of the sentence. It's up to the Judge whether to include it afterwards as time served. In this case, he was facing sentencing. There was talk about serving the rest of the plea agreement or abandoning it and adding more time. Either way, HE HADN'T ALREADY SERVED HIS SENTENCE!!!!! He had only done the psych testing. He skipped out before sentencing.
The doctor released him from the evaluation but has absolutely no authority over his actual sentence.
He should have used his well paid lawyers to negotiate and ensure his plea agreement and stayed to face the balance of his time. Instead he chose to skip. New crime on top of the old one which hadn't been satisfied yet. Could have been done and home in just over a month, and lived the rest of his life in freedom.”

But you have beautifully crafted a message designed to open our eyes and draw us together. The divisiveness in this country is staggering. Us vs Them in almost every issue and media. It's vital that we take a step back and see that contention will never solve anything. You've given us pause to do that. "WE" thank you!”

“While you're right about the money trail, you may have missed my point. I don't think marketability means a thing when you're considering one's contribution to society. I think it's a travesty that we shower the most money on what used to be considered court jesters, who prance for our amusement, and give the lowest wages to the folks make the biggest difference. Firefighters, paramedics, police, soldiers, protect and save our lives on pitiful salaries. And teachers, who change lives and affect the course of history, make some of the lowest wages of all. When we finally do kick loose a little more "education" money, it goes to administrators, not classrooms.
Maybe you think someone who can throw a ball or play make-believe on film is worth millions every year. I don't. Elementary school playground activities pale in comparison to folks who devote their lives to making the world a better place. Granted, some celebrities donate and volunteer to charities. With all they get, they should. But it's still way down the ladder from the ones who really ought to be treated as heroes.”

“Game changers? Mrs. Swensen, 3rd grade, and Miss Lindvall, 6th grade. A good teacher can change the world. If only they were paid even a fraction of what we lavish on those who pretend and play children's' games for a living instead of having to struggle and buy classroom supplies out of their own pockets. Actors, athletes, musicians, get paid well because they entertain us. Politicians pad their pockets and egos through the lobby and back room deals. None deserve our admiration or discipleship for those reasons. Heroes and game changers should have to earn the titles, and in my view teachers have, and continue to earn it every day.”

“With the exception of the occasional tax supported stadium or arena, no one is taking money away from teachers and giving it to actors and football players and presumably the tax money returns in the form of revenue from said stadium or arena.
Athletes and entertainers make truckloads of money because sports and entertainment are businesses, they generate money from the fans that pay to see them perform and buy their licensed products. Throw in the fact that most of these people not only donate money to charity and that they are actively involved in charitable projects (often on behalf of education) and you will realize that they pose no problem to education.
Teachers are not paid what they are worth because we have been brainwashed against raising taxes to the level where we can properly support the very institution we entrust with our children’s futures as well as properly compensate the generous and selfless individuals who choose to make this their life's work .
Generally speaking, sports and entertainment are two of the very few industries in which those who are actually producing the work are being properly compensated in proportion to the revenue they help generate.
If you’re a liberal like me you can’t possibly be against that.”

Some even find it in being able to wake up every morning.
Studies, while interesting, never show a wide view of anything. Yet they expect you to accept what they show as the most important "facts" on the issue.

“I don't feel the need to cut down on meat, especially when I already eat it sparingly. And contamination-wise, veggies have had a huge share of that, especially this last year.
What I'm saying is the vegans I know are no more healthy than the omnivores, so in my experience a blanket statement has some holes in it. Every study that comes out has pros and cons, and contradicts other studies that were supposedly the absolute truth. There are so many factors that affect our lives and health, many have nothing to do with what we eat.
If a vegan lifestyle works for you, fine. It's not for me, and ignorance has nothing to do with it.”

“If this were true, then the vegans I know should be healthier than the rest of us. Yet they suffer from the same ailments and die of the same causes. I don't think there can be a universal diet that works for everyone. Nor would everyone want to abide by one if it doesn't include foods they like. I'm all for moderation and balance. An occasional tenderloin on the grill is great for protein and makes me feel real good. Don't approve? Don't have one!”

“Having been a professional researcher in nutrition for the past 40 years, I'm always amazed at the ignorance of what has been scientifically proven; the most religious advocates of a high-protein, high-meat diet ignore decades of indicators that the typical American diet is a major instigator of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, etc. And, yes, vegans and vegetarians do have much better health records as a rule. There are, of course, vegetarians who eat junk food--and, since someone mentioned it, the rural poor of So. India eat white rice and sugar and get inadequate calories, so they don't compare well with some in the No. who eat more meat--but the Indian diet is not at all like the high-protein one advocated by some here. Read John Robbins' The Food Revolution for other reasons to cut down on meat--including the contamination by chemicals and by animal diseases and the ecological implications (you can do more to help global warming by eating less meat than anything else an individual can do).”

Back on topic: who are we to tell an individual "Stop expressing yourself!" We can either consume their works or ignore them. We can't and shouldn't try to stop them. That's morally wrong to pass judgment like that.”

There's going to be some abuse with any form of treatment. But that doesn't change the fact that countless lives are made better and more livable by medications. You wouldn't berate a diabetic for taking insulin. Yet it's so easy to dismiss mental and emotional problems and cry drug abuse. One reason is those who haven't suffered clinical depression have no idea what it feels like. They can't appreciate the amazing difference treatment can make. They've never stood on the edge of suicide or seriously considered it as an alternative. Or felt the joy of choosing treatment and seeing those images of hopelessness disappear along with the pain of getting through one hour at a time.”

One, whose IQ was 160+, never completed a coherent sentence until he was on medication. I was shocked to hear him utter complete thoughts. The other, less gifted but still very talented, now seems quite diminished in capacity. He used to be a voracious reader and writer and, I admit, prone to outrageous behavior (he ate a butterfly with Easter dinner and ran down the street naked singing opera); now he is just dull. I think that medication harmed him yet helped his brother. Diagnosing mental illness is one thing; treating it is another.”
