America Without a Middle Class

America Without a Middle Class

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 10:52:39 in Business

“No middle-class is what defines a third-world style banana republic.

No middle-class means the end of democracy, the decline of the Rule of Law, emergence of a police state, wide-spread poverty, ignorance, violence, and banana republic style living conditions surrounding the heavily guarded and gated homes of the few brutal robber barons left.

This is what the current unchecked Wallstreet greed is leading us toward, but it is difficult to see how a U.S. that looks like that will be better for anyone in the future.”

This Is Not Just America's War

Shocked -- Or Not? New Data Shows Abortion Quite Common In Most Red States

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 16:13:54 in Politics

“And drinking was common under alcohol prohibition in the 1930s; drugs are still being sold and used (even in prisons) decades into the "war on drugs"; etc.

We need real solutions to real human problems, and the mindless prohibition/criminalization schemes are always doomed to fail and likely even aggravate problems.

There is a simple legislative solution to every problem: And it's wrong.

Abortions, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, etc., these are complex human problems that require individual medical and counseling treatment to encourage and support better individual choices.

Broad legislative actions and criminalization of everything we don't like makes for great circus and politics, but political grand standing and easy slogan answers will never solve complex individual human problems.

Only real individual humans can solve real individual human problems.

Or . . . we can keep pretending it ain't so, and that there are simple answers to complex problems, with continued disastrous results.”

mrpotatohead replied on Nov 30, 2009 at 23:17:12

“This is exactly right.

We could solve much of the problem without any legislation at all if we so chose.”
The Seventeen-Year Lie

The Seventeen-Year Lie

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 15:16:38 in Books

“We now have a culture of zero accountability for those with power, and zero tolerance for everyone else.

If you simply look at a police officer the wrong way, you could be tasered, cuffed, and jailed with no realistic legal recourse.

But systematically loot the U.S. treasury, commit torture and other war crimes, no problem because there is no accountability for the rich and powerful.

Our Founders would be ashamed of what we have become, as this contempt for the common Rule of Law by the powerful is profoundly unamerican.

In a democracy, the laws must apply equality and fairly to all. The rich and powerful should have no special immunity.

It's time for some real change, starting with the re-establishment of the common Rule of Law for all.

Support HR 1207 and SR 604 auditing the Fed, and continue to demand accountability from your own government at every opportunity.

And those that ignore our legitimate requests get booted from office, those that ignore our common laws go to jai.

A government that is not accountable to its own people is a government that is a grave danger to its people.”
An Open Letter To President Obama On Afghanistan

An Open Letter To President Obama On Afghanistan

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 12:54:38 in World

“Thank you Michael, for being the voice of millions and millions of Americans who seek only peace and a better future for all.

President Obama is making the mistake of his life, dooming his presidency, and sending thousands, likely tens of thousands of young Americans to their deaths for no good cause, and quite possibly assuring the bankruptcy of our Nation as we get further bogged down in the death and money pit in Afghanistan.

We don't have any legitimate reason for this pointless war, but nonetheless we are now being told to prepare for a long war, 10, 15, or more years.

And do you think it will be his children fighting this war? The children of wealthy MIC investors?

As always, tt will be the children of the poor, working, and to a lesser degree middle classes dieing and being maimed in this pointless war.

And a draft would only assure an endless stream of cannon fodder for the Generals. Check history, the draft is for poor and working people.

The rich don't fight these wars. Never have, never will. They just profit from them, and the lives of our children mean nothing if the bottom line is more power and dollars for the MIC.

Eisenhower warned us about the MIC.

Sadly, Americans did not listen. And apparently, neither did President Obama.”
Will The Unemployment Disaster Be Obama's Katrina?

Will The Unemployment Disaster Be Obama's Katrina?

Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 17:04:35 in Politics

“By tapping directly into our pockets (through taxation and zero accountability bailouts) Washington and Wallstreet have created a bubble of security that safely separates them from the consequences of their own actions.

Washington and Wallstreet caused the financial collapse, but now it's our problem.

They are doing just fine: Solid income: check; secure employment: check; good health care: check)

They caused the problem through their own greed and negligence, but now the consequences belong to us, so the only reason they would care would be some moral sense of responsibility (yeah; I laughed too, till I cried).

There have been no real consequences for their actions. To the contrary, they are doing just fine, and they don't have to even see the rest of us or what they have done to us.

So yes it is like Katrina in that sense.

Not their house under water; Not their problem. Not their families in harms way; they don't care.

No consequences for them; no concern from them.

We now have a system of taxpayer funded welfare for the powerful and "too big to fail" and brutal capatilism for everyone else.

So when Washington turned Wallstreet lose to out-source your job, raid your 401k, retirement, and loot our treasury, from their perspective, it's your fault your out of work now, not theirs.”

Why is Obama Championing Bush's Financial Wrecking Crew?

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 16:06:39 in Business

“No amount of warning helps though, because our two-party system only gives us gave us two undesirable options: Obama's Blair-lite and McCain's Bush-lite. Slightly different rhetoric, but no real difference in reality.

Our nation has been taken over by corporate lobbyists who not only tell our government officials what to do, they actually write the legislation for them.

We need to dump the two-party system, which is not in our Constitution, but which has been forced upon us by the two-parties themselves.

And it's far too easy for the corporate lobbyists to buy off both parties, which leaves us right where we are now: Screwed.”

“Kind of makes one's skin crawl to quote Grover Norquist . . . but yes.

The federal reserve is an anti-democratic institution with unlimited access to your money but zero accountability to you or anyone else that is paying their bills.

The fed needs to go, and in its place establish an institution that actually protects the People and their financial futures, and not just the financial futures of their Wallstreet pals.”

“Agreed. Setting up these lose-lose scenarios isn't rocket science, but they have refined it to an art.

If you have not read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" it is very helpful in understanding what is happening.

It's not going to be pretty, but we will prevail, if for no other reason than there are over 6 billion of us and just a handful of them.

When we realize that we actually hold the power, and we educate ourselves to use it, then and only then will we have our power back.

We must always use non-violent means though. No need to give them any excuse for violence against common people simply standing up for their own lives, liberty, and property.

Shalom friend.”

SavvyLass replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 15:43:44

“I have read Klein's "The Shock Doctrine", and commented in a post of her's that I think this is one of the most important books to come out in recent times, and one I think everyone should read.

I also agree with you regarding people power. I'm only hoping the realization will set in sooner rather than later for the world' population. I thought the recent financial heist would spur the people to movement, but alas, no. And definitely agree on non-violence--they don't really need an excuse any more than we need another bailout.

Peace right back at you.”

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 14:10:58 in Business

“Of course. They are merciless thieves . . . but they're not crude animals.

They will steal everything we have (they have even figured out how to rob the yet unborn through deficit financed bail-outs), leaving us to struggle and starve in poverty, but then blame us for our own demise.

It's much less messy that way, and they really don't like to come in actual contact with the working and middle classes if they can avoid it.”

SavvyLass replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 14:29:06

“Well, maybe we should take to the streets then, in a sort of "in your face" protest so that they can then sick their private security corporations on us and then ... well, perhaps then and only then, they'll turn into those crude animals you mentioned.

It seems like we're stuck between a rock and a hard place here. Perhaps the President is caught in the same sh#@ storm.”

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 13:50:59 in Business

“Because the White House and Congress now take orders from Goldman Sachs and the other "too big to fails" through their puppet Federal Reserve, not the other way around.

We are all now at the mercy of our Wallstreet over lords. They are holding our economy, our treasury, our government, and all of us hostage, threatening to destroy the whole system in a collapse if they don't get exactly what they want.

Problem is, this way its just a slow motion collapse as they bleed us dry.

On the positive side though, at least it was a non-violent take-over of our government and theft of our collective financial futures . . .”

“Your right. It takes about 10 pounds of grain to make one pound of meat.

We now use meat as a flavoring, but the meat centered meals are now pretty much over for us.

As a result, we are healthier, we spend far less on groceries, and if more of us did this the price of food would go down and the availability go up.

We still have kosher chicken on Shabbos, but we are actually much better off without so much meat, and it is our great hope that others will be too.

Shalom to all.”

Anything less is complicity.”

“From domestic internment camps to the use of a nuclear weapon against a civilian population, this treatment was shocking and shameful.

Coverning it up doesn't change the reality, just the perception.

Following WW II Germany was forced to confront its past, and Germany was a better nation for it.

The U.S. must also do this, and give up on the dangerous illusion of American exceptionalism because it can blind us to the moral realities of our actions.

When the U.S. commits a war crime, it is still a war crime. When the U.S. does something evil, it is still evil.

Refusal to accept that makes it much more likely that the U.S. will commit war crimes and evil acts in the future.

And in the present, we are refusing to confront U.S. torture or to hold our own war criminals accountable under our own laws.

The U.S. is a great nation because of the Rule of Law.

Not a nation that can ignore the Rule of Law because it is great.”

And since Japan continues to remain ignorant of it's past, Japan has become a better nation for it, right?

But who cares about the 32 million Chinese? It wasn't like the Japanese slaughtered 12 million white Europeans, right?”

Honestly, given the massive, flaming bag of doo doo this poor man inherited from day one, I wouldn't blame him if he was smoking crack.

With the stress levels he must have, I think we could cut him some slack on a few bad habits.”

SadieNardini replied on Nov 06, 2009 at 10:54:07

“We do cut him, and all of ourselves some slack, and we should. However, that doesn't preclude us from asking ourselves, our loved ones and the president to look at those bad habits, and find a way to relieve that same stress in a way that amplifies life and health and self-reliance and focus--all the things we want more of from ourselves...and our president.

This article is not only about President Obama. He's a catalyst to help people who are currently struggling with a smoking habit change their lifestyles and find coping mechanisms that work better than the ones that cause illness and reliance on externals.
