“All conservatism is based upon the idea that if you leave things alone you leave them as they are. But you do not. If you leave a thing alone you leave it to a torrent of change.

“Thanks for that. I had never heard it before, but previous quotes from Chesterton have been really good, as I remember. I'll have to put him on my reading list. Thanks again. My version of it has always been that if you aren't moving forward, you will fall back. There is no "standing still." (Entropy.)”

Too Religious To Be Spiritually Mature

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 20:08:06 in Living

“Spirituality is the goal. Spirituality is a personal relationship with God in whatever name or concept by which you recognize it.

Faith is there to fall back on when Spirituality is weak. Like a friend you haven't spoken to in a long time, but understand that you'll still be friends when you see each other again.

Religion is there when Faith is weak. You might not have the will to keep your own Faith strong, but you can rely on others to support you.

Unfortunately, a lot of people never make it past religion, and there are a lot of reasons for this. Religion, being a human creation to quantify the unquantifiable, is vulnerable to the imposition of others' wills. Especially by making the focus of religion the afterlife and how to get there, people have been blinded to God's love surrounding them now. They feel the ache of that lack, but not having the tools to understand it, turn it into a more fervent pursuit of the wolf-in-God's-clothing they've been handed by those seeking power and control.”

Why Keep Geithner?

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 15:59:15 in Business

“No, I'm not calling him a Reaganite. Obama is a centrist, which is not a creature I believe legitimately occurs in nature. What I'm saying about his over-willingness to believe in the the Myth of the Market is that these myths were unchallenged for too long, to the point where someone otherwise reasonable can waste as much time and effort coddling it, as Obama has done.”

Why Keep Geithner?

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 14:41:22 in Business

“My greatest problem with President Obama (who I voted for and still support) is that he believes too much in the Reagan era capitalist mythology that A) Wall Street = The Economy, B) That government should be run like a business and C) that corporations possess a shred of sense or decency when applied to anything other than their most immediate gain.

Geithner is simply the raging cold sore of the President's infected thinking.

Furthermore, this is why anyone using the word "socialist" in reference to Obama has a clearly demonstrated failure to understand the words that they are using.”

j mcdouglas replied on Nov 02, 2009 at 14:56:28

“A) Wall Street = working people's retirements/pensions. Unfortunately. But that's why Obama had to save it. And that's why Republicans knew he would when they tanked it all on purpose to try and short circuit Obama's healthcare plans.

B) He doesn't believe government should be run like a business, unless you mean he believes in actually counting every penny and not hiding things off the books like Reagan and Bush did.

C) He has no illusions that corporations are decent.

I agree Obama isn't a socialist, but he's not Reaganite either... not by a long shot.

Bush Jr was the prototypical Reagan disciple. Every policy he pushed was Reaganomics writ large. It's fascinating that as crazy as Bush Sr was, he was still sensible enough to realize how crazy Reagan and his son were/are.”

“People don't want words, they want action. Look at what has been done since Obama took office and look where we are at now.

That's action...in action.

higher debt, higher unemployment and bigger government.

Is that the results of Obama's action that you wanted?”

“Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding!

There can be no starker example than the Carter/Regan presidencies. Carter was honest and head-on about the problems that faced us and the responsibility required to change us from a self-destructive course. People didn't like that. It didn't make them feel good. They wanted the bad man who suggested they had a role in the solution to go away.

So they elected Reagan who rolled back as much of Carter's progress as he could and said "We don't need to think about that, let's just decide we're right without really thinking about how or why we're right, and the good feeling will make it all seem like a dream." For this, he's idolized by the ignorant. But looking at the fallout of this policy, we're now dealing with all the issue he left to fester unseen and unheeded while living in self-serving ignorant bliss.

Debt is worse. The disparity between rich and poor is worse. The corporate abuse of the environment is worse in SO many ways. Our dependence on foreign fossil fuels is worse. Basically every seed that came to fruition under the Dubya; the Worst President Ever were planted by Ronald Reagan's "leave it to the children" policies.

It also helps that the people narrow-minded enough to become Republicans comfort themselves with the thought that if they can callously trample over others on their way to financial security, then anyone can, if they just APPLY themselves.”

“The "zero tolerance" approach to co-worker shenanigans might make legal sense from a "CYA" perspective, but it's utterly unrealistic in dealing with the realities of true human behavior. Humans have sex. When humans are thrown together for the majority of their waking hours in a workplace, humans are going to find other humans in the workplace to have sex with, regardless of hierarchy. It's simply disingenuous to pretend otherwise.”

Why Obama Won't Be Able to Reform Wall Street

Commented Sep 14, 2009 at 21:12:06 in Business

“Good call, Arianna.

Obama, like Clinton before him, is far too invested in the mythology of "The Market" (for example, that it has any more sense to preserve itself than a black hole has to stop sucking).

Unfortunately, it's the rarest of politicians that can resist the subtle influence of the over-represented high end of the wealth spectrum, and for many, selling us out is their mission statement.”
