“The medical profession has to shoulder much of the blame. Doctors order tests to head off malpractice suits, to throw a few referrals to cohorts(with possible kickbacks), and to pay off equipment they own and make a huge profit. Check the statistics on where the most expensive health care is, in areas where the doctors' groups own the medical equipment. .... Superior hospitals like May have the lowest average costs because they encourage doctors working with the patients and are paid accordingly. Note the brouhaha over the mammogram study..... ...”

“I still don't understand why there has to be a health insurance industry, where top execs take multimillion dollar salaries and thousands of middle managers make six-figure salaries to push forms around and make arbitrary life and death decisions. Why not health insurance for all Americans paid for by a health insurance deduction (a la the Medicare deduction) from each working person's salary, administered by a nonprofit entity. Problem solved.”

“MrJoyBoy
"administered by a nonprofit entity. Problem solved" YOUR LAST SEVEN WORDS SAID IT ALL.
THE HEALTH INSURANCE INDUSTRY NEEDS TO BE MADE NOT FOR PROFIT.
FOR ONE SIMPLE REASON
“Health care ins. companies are different fom an economics point of view
1. Demand for health care is INELASTIC meaning you will pay any price to get it particularly when your life is at stake, therefore the law of supply and demand CANNOT work.
That is why pricing is regulated in civilized countries and profiting from basic care is outlawed.”
2. Competition apparently does not work for private health care insurance companies in the same way that it does for others marketing other goods and services. Health care spending is mostly non-discretional and therefore the law of supply and demand in the marketplace really does not function.
3. If the insurance is paid for by the employer but used by the employee, that also changes things.
4. Finally the insurance company has financial incentive of denying claims thus marketing an inferior product.
5. If the rule is that private enterprise results in the marketing of better goods and services for the public than the government could provide, private health care companies are the exception that proves the rule.””””
