DVDs -- How And Why You Should Switch To BluRay

Commented Jan 03, 2009 at 02:10:23 in Entertainment

“I agree with some of the OP's points. Ie not buying new titles on DVD and opting for the blu-ray version ( I pretty much refuse to buy new dvds nowadays) but there is no point in owning an HD format of any kind if you don't have an HDTV. For those of us with newer sets though there is no excuse not to get a bluray. My grandparents and their tube set? No way.

Action films make good candidates for replacement but I don't think I'd repurchase anything filmed before the 90's unless we're talking about a digitally scrubbed remastered version of a classic like Patton.”

“I agree completely Mr MehistoX. SonofLiberty1, I have no desire to be the "first on the block" with new technology and have actively argued against most new formats. But DVds are firmly ensconced and are not going anywhere. BluRay is not a whole new format, just a new DVD offering, much like Special Editions. With players at $150 and dropping, the entry point couldn't get much lower and I abolsutely agree with you that with a very few rare exceptions no one should buy a BluRay title if it's significantly more expensive than the equivalent regular DVD. But nothing is going to supplant DVDs over the next ten years (nothing is even on the horizon except downloading and streaming) and even if 20 years from now they have offered some new toy that everyone embraces, the regular and BluRay DVDs people buy today will provide them pleasure for the rest of their lives, just like the LPs and CDs and hardcover books and DVDs and 78s people enjoy today.”

“"did anybody really think the same country that puts lead paint on our children's toys was going to come clean about this? "

Granted the other points are valid but since when is an entire country to blame? There are good factories in China of course ( and the overwhelming majority do not contain lead ) but we can't blame companies like Mattel and corrupt CEOs for picking the cheapest factories with the lowest wages in an already inexpensive labor market now can we?

Japanese companies like Sony haven't suffered a quality hit. Why? They actually pay for quality production facilities.”

“I don't think it's stupidity so much as laziness. Look at Oregon for example. We have mail in balloting and still voter turnout is only around 52%! If voters can't get off the couch to place a ballot in the mailbox outside their home how would you expect the same demographic to get off their a#$# hop in the car, drive to a voting booth, stand in line ( Ee gads exercise!) and then muster enough physical strength to fill in a few circles or pull a lever?

This is the one case where I might permanently make good on my promise to permanantly immigrate to another country ( I was overseas for two splendid years right after the 2004 election) if the Republicans win this time. If a stellar once in a life-time candidate like Obama can't win we can't either.”

“FISA is the regulatory body. Telecoms are not immune from criminal prosecution. As for civil suits do you really want your rates to sky-rocket due just like your health insurance sky-rocketed after addicts (my grandparents included) chose to slowly kill themselves with nicotine only to blame the Tobacco industry after the fact?

The world is not black and white. Why is McCain a flip flopper for trying to win and Obama a traitor?”

“Let's think for a second...law suits against the telecoms would cost them billions which would then be passed along to Joe and Mary consumer in the form of higher bills each month. It's unfortunate but that is how retroactive law-suits would pan out, enriching the legal teams responsible to the tune of millions with affected consumers netting a few hundred dollars at best and increased rates for everyone else. NUANCE people NUANCE!

What's done is done go after Bush and Cheney.”

“What a joke. You think that nothing can be done about the law breaking telcoms, and yet something can be done about Bush and Cheney?”
