Dems Discussing Public Option With Opt-Out Clause: The Silver Bullet?

Dems Discussing Public Option With Opt-Out Clause: The Silver Bullet?

“Health care for all is the ideal AsISaid but I fail to see the hypocrisy in favoring health care for MOST (temporarily) v.s healthcare for none permanently. If this is successful wouldn't you think that a dissatisfied public in states opting out would probably opt out of re-electing the fools in their state legislatures voting to deny them coverage?

Unfortunately there is no-opting out of Insurance Bean-Counter Bureaucracy.”

AsISaid replied on Oct 07, 2009 at 22:36:29

“Actually, I believe in standing by my principles. IF it comes down to a total defeat, then I will accept incremental changes. But we aren't there yet. I think health care is a right, or should be, and it should not be predicated on your income, your health history, or....where you live. We got rid of many of the discriminatory practices that were practiced in some states with the Civil Rights Act. This is no different to me with respect to state by state differences. Why would I support - at this time - a proposal that would guarantee that citizens of one state will have rights different from citizens in another state? I want to have this all fought out before I cave in to this type of major concession. We all should fight up until the bitter end.”

“"Pharma produces something unique: pharmaceutical innovation.

Pharma takes a risk, deserves some kind of reward.

Insurance? No risk in that. There are plenty of people around. They will fall ill, that is certain.

What risk is there in being in the business of shuffling papers between sick people and doctors?

Not much. There will always be plenty of sick people.

Researching a new drug? Lots and lots of risk there.

I'm OK with Pharma making a profit.

Not insurance. Or hospitals."

I actually agree with you on this. If pharma can help I say let them help. The option is still open for Congress to modify later but I am willing to compromise with at least a robust public option in lieu of single payer for the time being: not everything can be free but it should be fair. The insurance industry broke the system not big pharma. Since when did the denial of a prescription lead to bankruptcy?”

Get a degree in engineering instead of wasting your undergraduate years without a beer bong and then talk.

It's the U.S education system's fault not the fault of countries who can actually produce results.”

He threw everything (morals included) into one last bid for the presidency but indeed it is nice to have the old McCain back. Say what you will, the guy is a decent human being outside of an election cycle. I'm glad he lost because now he has power as a voice of dissent...conservatives hate him anyway and would have lead him as a puppet president. What has he got to lose?”

“Did you check the age of the protestors? That's right they are college age students and these are the people you are offending by making gross generalizations about China like Cafferty. American media didn't report on it but there were a rash of pro-china protests in the US and abroad at the time free tibet protestors tried to punk a wheel-chair bound Chinese athlete as she was proudly carrying the torch. Ever hear of the "I love China" internet phenomenon on Instant messenging programs? Didn't think so.

Most of you have never even set foot in the country let alone talked to anyone who actually lives there. And before you cry "oh they don't know any better: it's propoganda." How can you be sure you're getting both sides of the story from America's MSM an organization you normally decry?”

lexnekst replied on Aug 06, 2008 at 12:42:45

“And most of us recognize the inferiority of the media in the US. That's why were on this blog and not watching CNN right now.

The problem in China is you guys dont see the flaw in your gov't. And if all those people DO see the flaws, and still do nothing- Maybe the Chinese aren't as smart as we thought.”

lexnekst replied on Aug 06, 2008 at 12:37:52

“Nobody has said a thing about the people of China. But if you take offense about the Gov't being labeled "thugs and goons"- Check out Sudan.

We can't help it if the Chinese people are up in arms, because their state media told them to be.

People criticize the US everyday for everything, it's part of being a superpower.

So man up, China.”

“Amen! The people who made the macbook you're currently ranting on just want to enjoy the f#$#$ games. China is not Burma or North Korea.

I echoed similar comments on page 2 consider me a fan Cardineau. The irony of the situation is that people on this forum bash the MSM on a daily basis for corporate bias yet suddenly trust them as a credible source when it comes to covering something they have absolutely no understanding about: China.

Here is some more advice for China bashers, live there for a while, talk to a Chinese person, get an understanding of the country that makes your over-consumption life-style possible and then you'll realize we should give it a rest until the games are over.

Glass houses people, glass houses.”

“And yet most Taiwanese fathers are perfectly willing to open factories and use cheap labor in the P.R.C while sending funds back to their families in Taiwan just like every other company western or otherwise.

My point is ordinary Chinese people are not the enemy here and using the games as a chance to stand on political soap boxes is only harming our image in their eyes. They want to enjoy their chance in the sun without throwing stones at our own glass house.”

stopgeorge replied on Aug 03, 2008 at 01:01:49

“Do you honestly believe these games are FOR the ordinary Chinese person? It's pure political theater and I laugh out loud when Hu Jin-tao tells us all to stop making it political.

If it wasn't about politics, then instead of the ridiculous name of "Chinese Taipei, we would be seeing this country's athletes wearing "Taiwan" on their backs.

China wanted the Olympics -- well now they are going to get scrutinized as they should. BTW, if you read your history, the ancient games in Greece were political in every sense. Greek philosophers were seen protesting openly throughout the ancient games.”

It's far easier to throw stones from the outside. Your ignorance of other cultures is baffling to me considering your screen name.”

Annette replied on Aug 03, 2008 at 01:21:03

“Of course the Chinese people are pleased to show off their country. If the Chinese are happy with the censorship by their government good for them. They should enjoy it. The rest of the world does not share their values, and we are not obliged to share their values. Many of us read papers from several areas of the world. The papers in India, the UK, France, Mexico and Canada. Things the Chinese are not allowed to read. Perhaps China should quit demanding the rest of the world pat them on the back and utter cooing approval. In the rest of the world there are many aspects of China that are interesting, however the rest of the world doesn't like China's behavior in Tibet. And the nanny state we will decide what you can see is only acceptable in China and a few other Authoritarian places. China deciding that foreigners cant read the BBC or the German newspapers sure shows that they are insecure. I personally don't plan to watch the Olympics, over rated spectacle. The thought of watching people sweat in large groups just isn't interesting, if they are in the crowd or running, and jumping. Just not interesting. I wonder how many people give a durn. Seems like fewer and fewer people care each time.”

“As educated and humanitarian as some of you pretend to be I doubt you've ever actually lived let alone worked in China: I have. Guess what? The overwhelming majority of Chinese people actually want to enjoy the games and are proud to be hosting them. Let it go and focus your attention on enacting change in your own country before condemning a culture you do not understand.

The government is effectively CINO (communist in name only) and last time I checked their social safety net ( Universal health care comes to mind) trumps the pitiful for profit system we have in the U.S.

It works for them leave it be.”

“Guess what? I've lived in Taiwan for several years. China has politicized these games against this democratic country since they received notice that they would be hosting them. They still are pointing 1500+ missiles at this country. They still are diplomatically blocking Taiwan from receiving international status -- a tragedy during the SARS epidemic. And they are still preventing the Taiwanese Olympic team from being called "Taiwan" for Chrissakes!

Whether you now call the government fascist or communist, they are "authoritarian" and will listen to no one. Got that? No one.

It is a travesty that Beijing was allowed to host these games. But I'm not surprised in this Potemkin world we live in.”
