“Polanski discouraged the mother from being present for the photo shoot. I bet mothers know better these days, but this was thirty years ago, before Adam and Elizabeth Smart.

“You don't understand the sex victim's mentality. She wants to be left alone. If Polanski gets attention, she gets unwanted attention.

You also don't understand that the crime was against society as well as the victim. That's why criminal cases are styled "State/US/Commonwealth etc. vs. Criminal.”

“The victim isn't 13 any more and I think we can take her at her word, not presume to know her better than she knows herself.

Perhaps the reason she doesn't want to see him punished is because she doesn't want to see him punished.

And I understand perfectly well it's a criminal case, but criminal cases are dropped all the time.”

“The system works well enough in the majority of cases. Do you know of a society with a better system? Granted, we need better defense attorneys, prosecutors who care about the truth and not just wins, and the exoneration of innocents due to DNA tells us that capital punishment is given too often.

Oh, and some rich people get punished. See Richard Scrushy and Bernie Madoff.”

A Letter From Roman Polanski

Commented Dec 27, 2009 at 20:00:09 in Entertainment

“If your opinion was based upon facts, rather than spin, it might have some validity.

First, judges are not bound by plea bargains entered into between prosecutors and defense attorneys. A judge exercises independent judgment and is not a rubber stamp for the prosecution. Hence, the judge could not "renege."

Second, the plea deal did not call for any jail time, if I recall correctly. That sounds ridiculously lenient.

Third, the victims of sex crimes react differently than other crime victims. Publicity victimizes them all over again. Nevertheless, society can not allow people who sexually abuse children to go unpunished.

Mr. Polanski should have dealt with his issues three decades ago. Now he is an old man, and wants sympathy?”

“a: his confinment was cruel and unusual. NOBODY with that grade of offense has that type of time given, and because of his name, it was solitary confinement. that is excuse enough to drop the whole thing.

b: NOBODY EVER PROSECUTES these cases. stat rape is a non-starter. he got dinged cause some people wanted publicity.

now, while we destroy the world, take away all human rights one by one, destroy our food supply, create NEW war fronts on terror, you people are worried enough about this to think he warrants punishment.

No, I just know more than you do, The Congressional Leaders very wll know that Reconciliation was an option. They briefly discussed using it. It has it's own drawbacks but being held hostage by Lieberman and Nelson is not one of them.

Their choice of a bad strategy is the WHOLE POINT of people like Howard Dean who first wanted to go back and use Reconciliation. They miscalculated, which in itself is not the biggest sin. The bigger sin is refusing to admit that you screwed up and going back to FIX it.

They also miscalculated politically on the unwavering support of their base and former volunteers or maybe they thought there'd be enough Obamatons left (as there obviously are) that they could dismiss the rest of us.”

Don't expect it to make sense. It does partially explain our foreign policy and massive funding of Israel, however.”

“The reason that they all get categorized together is because they all share one thing in common: a shared generational perpetuated delusion. It does not really matter if you are a fundamentalist or some new age guru in the end all of these "believers" are worshiping their own personal or communal version of the Lord of the Rings as if it were fact. The question really comes down to this: If this group where in charge of society how many people would be killed, tortured, arrested, executed, die in wars of choice, discriminated against, marginalized etc.... In the end some groups are worse than others. The Evangelicals have made it very clear what they would do with total control of society.

I think that peacefull1 is referring to dogmatic adherence to fanciful ideologies as the true danger. Remove the supernatural and most moral messages resonate with the population at large. Tell them that they have to believe in men with feathering wings that fly or snake that talk and suddenly there is a problem.”

“The author cites the alleged statistic that half of all American marriages end in divorce. The statistic is based upon the number of recorded marriages, and the number of recorded divorces.

The error in this conclusion is that partners in successful marriages are scored as one marriage. On the other hand, there are those people who marry and divorce multiple times, due to their personalities, poor judgment, or other traits that contribute to marrying unwisely and not sticking with their partners.

Cases in point: my parents, virgins on their wedding day, stayed married over 55 years, til death did them part, and the survivor never remarried.

On the othe extreme, Elizabeth Taylor married and divorced eight ? times, and some of those husbands had prior and subsequent marriages ending in divorce.

While half of marriages may end in divorce, that doesn't mean half of the married population gets divorced.”

DessLoch replied on Dec 12, 2009 at 11:33:28

“would you have preferred the statistics that show 3 out of 4 longterm marriage, marriages that don't end in divorce but rather death, the respondents said they are unhappy?

Other statistics show that 60% of all married men have cheated at least once. Online matching sites that have surveyed members have found that up to 70% of men lsing the site are actually married men posing as singles. They don't have the option to simply go out and pick up women the way single guys do, they take the less public option of finding partners. Folks looking at these statistics have found that determining factors are quite traditional ones, mainly wealth. Folks who are in the bottom decile and folks in the top decile divorce frequently. They are the class who can easily afford to divorce or that have nothing to lose. Majority of the folks staying together face a sometimes irretriveable loss of standard of living and ability to provide for the children. This class stays together resolutely whether happy or not longer than anyone else. The marriage is too integrated to their identity to fail. Functioning or no, they look at the social, family and other networks housing, vacations, they've invested years in building decide it's not worth starting over. they stay together sometimes cheating sometimes not.
Ultimately people stay married for their own reason, doesn't mean that the marriage is what is generally thought of as working, but it works for them and is therefore nobody's business.”

Tapper42nd replied on Dec 11, 2009 at 00:36:37

“Yes! Thank you for bringing this point up. In addition, statistically, outliers skew the median. You can't be married and get divorced -1 times to balance out getting divorced multiple times, so the mean will end up skewed to the high end (another example of this is housing prices - the median is a better descriptive statistic because while there can be kajillion-dollar mansions, there are few $100 houses, skewing the mean upwards)”
