“LizR, the electoral college is a relic, but one we are stuck with. Amending the Constitution to get rid of it requires consent of 3/4 of the states, and states like Idaho and Wyoming with low populations will never go along with it.

“The multiparty system you describe sounds like Italy.
The system is set up to preserve the hegemony of the two major parties.
The gerrymandering of safe districts is destroying our ability to reach consensus. The Republicans are inflexible and refuse to cooperate. We would do well to insist on more heterogeneous districts.”

“Not true at all. France, Canada, England, Germany (to name a few) have very vibrant multi-party systems where the major parties must work with the sub (or smaller) parties in order to get things done. As far as I'm concerned, it adds to the civil discourse in a positive way (yes, I lived in Europe for 2 years and followed politics closely, so I know how it works). Instead of Progressives being labeled as the "fringe elements" of the left, we would be the Progressive party that the Dems would HAVE to court in order to pass things. Hell, Republicans may even have to stick a few progressive measures in their bills (when they are back in power) to get things passed. We would at least feel like our voices are being heard a bit more than they are now with the "Progressive Caucus," which feels compelled to cave in to the whim of the Dems just because they currently all have a "D" after their name.
Generalize all you want about other countries' systems, but until you see it in action, you can't understand how beneficial it actually is to Democracy.”

“So you want someone in office whom you disagree with and is inflexible?”
Doctor Jones replied on Dec 30, 2009 at 21:05:45
“I didn't say I disagree with everything. There's not a politician that I agree with everything on so anyone would not meet your criteria. I want someone who understands and can defend their positions with conviction. You can call it inflexibility if you wish. All I know is Republicans voted in Bush in 2000 to stop Clinton's meddling overseas and on a non-interventionist platform. Obama was elected as a "peace" candidate and to bring a more sensible foreign policy to the forefront. Neither are upholding their promises. I want to know where they stand period. Not where they stand the day before the election.”
