Eight Reasons the Democrats lost Virginia & New Jersey--and How to Recover

“Corzine was most definately a bad candidate. He ran 100% negative campaign. You can do that if people like you all ready but the idea that you can win when you are universally unpopular by making the other guy even more unpopular is pretty stupid from such a smart guy.

Corzine need to connect with the electorate by saying look, if things aren't great, they would have been much worse if I had not done this, this, this and this.

I don't think intelligent people really believe that Christi, facing an $8 billion budget deficit, is going to be able to do anything fundamentally different. They just weren't willing to rehire a jerk for another 4 years.

Something about the water in Trenton turns the politicians into JERKS.”

Has the Military Mission in Afghanistan Become Lost?

“There comes a time when we need to look at our collective national soul and accept that we cannot fix all of the worlds problems. US national security does not require a functioning, stable, corruption free Afgan government. All we need to do is ensure that Afghanistan is not a safe harbor for terrorists. I'd rather we used a couple of squadrons of Hellfire equipped Predators than put our troops in danger.”

“As it is now, American's are just too afraid of change to really entertain the kind of programs we need to make things better.

Everyone gushes about Capitalism...without giving any acknowledgment to the skeletons in the closet.

Capitalism is just as much about big companies that use their monopolistic power to undercut small town pharmacist's prices, driving them out of business then raising prices when they are the only show in town.

Capitalism comes down hard on the average entrepreneur who may have a new idea that threatens how the big boys do business. and on inventors who have their ideas stolen instead of bought.

Capitalism means that all the seinor citizens who had some stock in GM lost everything while the overly compensated executives and the bankers got more than their fair share.

Capitalism is a celebration of greed. We need a system that is a celebration of the community.”

“American's and their cars. The biggest resistance to change is that people have a cowboy mentality about cars. Bigger is better. Bigger shows I'm more successful. ETC.

I sell cars and all the time I see people who aren't looking to buy the car that meets 95% of their needs, they are looking for the car to haul the family of 5 and all their junk on the 1 week road trip they hope to take each year. In other words they focus on the 5% of their needs. The rest of the year they plan to commute 20 miles one way in this gas guzzlin land yacht.

Now if they bought the commuter car they really needed, they would save enough money to rent the land yacht when they actually do take that trip and still come out ahead.

Its estimated that 95% of Americans would have the daily drive needs met by an electric car with a 100 mile range. But until the land yacht becomes 2 expensive to buy they will continue to blight our highways.

Look at whats in your driveway!”

“I sold cars and its totally true. I really think we need to raise the gas tax though (say by 1.00/gallon), rather than tax larger vehicles directly (maybe by $20,000 to see a real difference).
I remember seeing a lot of lower middle class people with kids and small business owners struggling to buy the larger vehicles that they needed, since they are already the groups under the most strain. It's the people with no children or one that buy large vehicles that don't need them and need to be discouraged. A gax tax would discourage everyone equally from driving frivously, even if they had a small car, and thus distribute the burdern. Then small business owners (many must buy cars in thier own name for credit reasons) and families wouldn't be unfairly burderned with a much larger tax than what they would pay if gax taxes were raised. The difference in the tax amount for a person with small truck that drove it for 250,000 would be $8500 and they could save money by driving less and wouldn't have to pay the tax all at once.”

“I'm so sick of the LIE that GM FORD and CHRYSLER did not build cars that American's wanted to buy.

For over 20 years, the best selling vehicle overall in the US is Ford F-150. And the Chevy Silverado has always been second. Since the Ram "semi look" redesign in the early 90s that truck has been in the top 10 many times.

The problem we have now is that American's can no longer afford to buy and run the vehicles they want. Now they have to face the reality that its time to buy the vehicle that meets 95% of their driving needs, the daily commute, instead of the vehicle they use to buy that focused on the 5% of their needs, the summer road trip, the monthly trip to Home Depot, etc.

The cost structure of the Big 3 is what killed them, not the vehicles that they build. (old factories, too many factories, too many dealers, too many vehicle lines to fill those factories, unfair labor contracts that made sense 20 yrs ago, staggering health care costs as baby boomer's retired.)

“This is the correct way to impose a gas tax.

The tax should be a set rate per mile driven collected at gas stations. HOWEVER each car will have a fuel economy factory based on that particular model's fuel efficiency. Cars that are more fuel efficient would have a factor less than 1 and cars that are grossly inefficient would have a factor greater than 1.

This way, people who have to drive a lot of miles but buy a fuel efficient car wouldn't suffer so badly.

I live in NJ. I am lucky enough to work a sales job in one of the most affluent areas of the state but I certainly can't afford to live there. I commute 42 miles one way, but I drive a car that gets 33 mpg highway.”

“Real facts about the car industry. Most if the people posting here miss the fact that the Best Selling Vehicle in the US for the past 23 years is the Ford F-150.

Oh and the Second best selling vehicle for most of that time? The Chevy Silverado.

Detroit understands what the American people want. And they made a killing providing it. What Detroit didn't think about was what would happen when the American people could no longer afford the vehicles they really want...

The beauty of CAFE is that it will force American's to buy vehicles they really don't want, because those will be the only ones available.

Incidentally, if are an American man reading this, and you have never wanted or owned a full size pickup truck, you lie. IMHO.”

“"Incidentally, if are an American man reading this, and you have never wanted or owned a full size pickup truck, you lie. IMHO."

Really? I am an American man and I have NEVER owned or wanted a full size pickup truck. Some of us men actually enjoy driving fast, good handling sports cars and have no need to own a truck.

Is there a use for pickups? Of course, and I dare say the reason they sell so well is because most of them are actually used as work trucks or to haul stuff around. Not that there aren't people who put huge tires on them and jack them up so they become useless as a work truck.

CAFE will force the car companies to make vehicles a LOT of Americans want -- a car that gets good gas mileage. You can still buy your full size pickup, because it isn't covered by CAFE - it is a truck, not a car, and so is not covered by CAFE.

Why do you think that CAFE is bad? Do you like giving hundreds of billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia and other oil nations?”

“The mantra that Honda and Toyota make the worlds best cars is BS. If you read any consumer mag or auto mag, you will not find ONE Toyota product that is "best in class" (possible exception is the Prius). Toyota quality is now falling.

As far as "American companies don't build the cars people want to buy" this is complete BS. The Ford F-Series truck has lead the sales charts for over 25 years! For many of those years F-Series was selling DOUBLE what the Camry was selling. For 2008, despite the rise in gas prices causing people to flee from trucks and SUVs, 4 of the top 10 sellers, including #1 and #2 were AMERICAN MADE!

The ill of Detroit is that over the past 40 years, the market for cars has become more and more fragmented into different segments and the Big 3 owned older less flexible plants. This makes it more expensive for them to compete in all these segments. Throw in higher labor, legacy costs and the inability to match production to demand to to unfavorable labor contracts and you have the state of the current auto market.

Even if Detroit makers had the reputation of Honda and Toyota, it is still unlikely that they would be profitable due to lack of manufacturing flexibility and the fragmentation of the market place, plus all the new players. Today you have to try to make a profit from more models that sell in fewer numbers.”

“Stop using religion as an excuse for your prejudice.

Everyone always wants to come back to the bible when it comes to gays and gay marriage. Dig below the surface though and you soon discover that this is just people trying to defend and rationalize their prejudice.

The bible Jesus said specifically that you shouldn't get divorced. Yet we have people who get divorced all the time.

The bible says that you shouldn't commit adultery. That even the fantasy is the same morally as the act. We all know how that one played out in modern life.

These are just 2 examples of the many strictures of the bible that people ignore today. SO don't let the haters through the bible in your face.

“Just an initial point! One cannot take God out of our everyday mind set. We want him there and He wants to be there. If He (God) changes His mind, then we can talk!
The point I wanted to make, openly gay in the military is different than being openly gay outside of the military. Take for example the civilian workplace, the civilian workplace, one spends 8 to 10 hours daily with all kinds of people and personalities. It is expected and everyone deals with it and are able to compartmentalize that experience. However, in the military, one lives and breaths 24/7 with comrades/brothers in war: fox holes, showers, sleeping bunking buddies, faith, mess hall, decor, privacy, etc.! I for one believe most people in the military would not want to bunk and shower with gay personnel present. This is a whole different sphere of acceptance of gays vs. in civilian life. An acceptance that goes to the core of our foundation of whom we are, our value systems, and who we want to be. For those reasons, "Openly gay will not work in the military because of these core value issues." If pushed by Obama, watch enlistment decline dramatically. I think both parties do not have the answers/discernment to mankind's ills. The only but here, the Republicans, under Dubya, were marching us and the world down a steep cliff toward eminent death!”

“The center right myth come from the Republican talent for getting Joe the Plumbers to vote against their own economic interest. The Republican party uses fear, hate and prejudice as a path to victory.

The Democratic party needs to stop treating this as anything other than what it is. When Rep. Lewis called McCain and the republican party out as racist, he was hitting the nail on the head. When we hear stupidity coming from the Republican party, we need to stand up and call it what it is. Just say it! "that is the stupidest proposal yet put forth!" Its easy.”

"Center-right" means absolutely nothing: not a thing. We have media to blame for this, primarily: it needs labels in order to lure Americans into checking out television news, radio, newspapers and websites. I am glad that the Huffington Post exists: it is on the right track toward getting meaningless labels out of the media, Obama is asking us all to pull together in order to get the hard work of rebuilding America off the ground: labels will kill that effort if we let them.”

“The most amazing thing about Christians who claim the homosexuality is against god's plan is they assume that all Christians believe the same.

The 261 year old congregation that basically founded the small Connecticut town I grew up in (the town is named after the first minister) is a member of the Untied Church of Christ which allows for gay marriage and gay ministers. This is a mainstream protestant church in a white wooden building with the steeple that you see in Charles Ives Christmas cards.

The point is, that its not religion that gives people their beliefs, its the other way around. People give their beliefs to their religion.

I refused to believe that a world that says a convicted murderer serving multiple life sentences is allowed to get married but I am not because I am gay is more pleasing to God.”

We visited a UCC church whose primary mission is to serve GLBT and their family, friends and supporters. My husband and I were one of the only straight couples there. This was the most beautiful, spiritually uplifting services I've ever attended. I could feel the love of God present in the room, and the love of the church members for their partners, families, friends and each other. But I could feel the pain that has brought together into a church these individuals who are condemned as sinners by other churches and religions simply for being the persons God made them to be.

I once belonged to a homophobic church but because I am NOT a homophobe, I was blind to the discrimination against two semi-closeted gay men in that church. I assumed they were accepted as a couple, worshipping and contributing together. The church and its associated college arrested members of Soulforce who visited the campus and wanted to come to the chapel to pray. Then I realized the church was homophobic. I projected my beliefs into the doctrine of my then-religion. I left that church and found one (UCC) with core beliefs similar to mine. You're right; people do give their beliefs to their religion. Thank you for sharing your profound thouhgts.”
