Time Warner Cable Offers Arbitration With Fox, Fox Says Deal Unlikely

Commented Dec 30, 2009 at 23:57:05 in Media

“There are lots of reasons to dislike NewsCorp, but I think the Fox broadcast network is being perfectly reasonable in wanting cable companies to pay a higher retransmission fee. After all, if ESPN gets paid $4 for each subscriber, why shouldn't Fox get $1 for each subscriber?

It would be nice if it were easier for everyone to drop cable and get TV by antenna, but that is just not realistic for most people.”

“"Individualism is contrary to a stable society."

That could possibly be the creepiest thing I've ever heard.”

iEye replied on Dec 30, 2009 at 17:45:11

“Individualism is contrary to a stable society? I guess Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Steve Jobs never got that message.

Individuals build a stable society. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

The fact that individualism is contrary to religion should be an immediate tip off that there is some truth to it.”

glockman replied on Dec 30, 2009 at 17:11:21

“I think a lot of them did realize, but they did not have the financial power to combat the GOP's efforts to co-opt what began as a libertarian movement that disliked the Republicans as much as it disliked the Democrats. The GOP geared up its Fox News propaganda machine to popularize the GOP version of the tea party movement and leave the libertarians out in the cold.”

“No, the president's job is not to "run the country." His job is to take care that the laws be faithfully executed. His job is also to serve as commander in chief of the armed forces in a manner that is consistent with his authority under the constitution and in a manner that fully respects the congress's authority to prescribe the discipline to be applied in the regulation and governance of the armed forces.

Congress really needs to shape up and start acting like a legitimate, independent branch of government that is fully capable of exercising its constitutional powers in a judicious way.”

“Why can't we get together with our real allies like Canada, Australia, and the NATO countries of Europe and try to set up a program to reduce our dependence on oil from nations where a majority of the people harbor a hostility toward the West? Why can't we have more trade with good nations and less trade with bad nations?”

LaurieAnn replied on Dec 30, 2009 at 12:18:40

“That's a wonderful idea. But remember, unlike most of the countries you mentioned the U.S. is virtually the only one with a government whose primary focus is keeping large businesses and corporations appeased through its economic policies. Too many powerful, extremely wealthy people have made and maintained their wealth from the current oil/energy situation in the Western world. They will torpedo energy independence the same way they have torpedoed any proposed non-Wall Street friendly economic policies.”

AnotherAngle replied on Dec 30, 2009 at 12:09:44

I miss the days when an appropriate sense of reticence gave us commercials with women strolling through a meadow vaguely discussing a "not so fresh feeling."

“Where did I contradict myself? I said that people want the programs that the broadcast channels carry, but they want the convenience of getting them through cable or satellite so that they don't have to put up an outdoor antenna.

The cable companies are used to the old model where they don't have to pay anything or don't have to pay much to carry the broadcast channels, because advertisers subsidize the cost of the programs. But the broadcast channels are saying to the cable companies "You pay ESPN, so you should pay us, too."

Cable companies are answering back " You need us more than we need you. People will not put up antennas."”

Swift2 replied on Dec 29, 2009 at 22:56:49

“I have rabbit ears, and in Los Angeles I can have about 80 channels. Most are crap, but some are very interesting channels on auxiliary bands -- 5.1 is the straight channel in Hi-Def, but 5.3 is movies all the time, mostly '60s and '70s. Good but old. Or KNBC has News Raw, where they have whole press conferences, and the story conferences in the newsroom, and all the Euro-style skiing and racing events on the other. If CNN had a management, they would offer news on local channels.

In other words, we'll increasingly be putting together our own a-la-carte mixes of programming, on antenna, fixed media (disks), files, streaming, etc., on cable (fast cable) and wireless. So screw Rupert, and all these 20th century types who are going the way of the dodo. Or the record labels. The only thing they're good for is financing production, not forcing a whole lineup on you. We souls be our own networks. Boxer forever!”

“Reaganism has severely damaged the U.S.

A lot of the people in this forum are just too young to remember when TV was regulated and censored. Back when there were just three commercial networks and PBS. When there were no ads for obnoxious prescription drugs. Back when people had a sense of propriety and decorum.

There were some really good TV shows back then. Unfortunately, whether they realize it or not, a lot of people have bought into Republican deregulation mania. They do not understand that government has a legitimate role in regulating society.”

“"cable has been allowed to run rough shod all over free TV"

You got that right. Prices have gone up and up, and program content is often not as good as what broadcast TV gave us thirty or forty years ago. The fracturing of the mass market into small niches has led to a coarsening of society and an acceptance of pure refuse as legitimate entertainment.”
