Ending the Great Recession: It's Going to Take More Than Just Stimulus

Commented Oct 30, 2009 at 15:46:52 in Business

“The solutions are for those at the top of the wealth curve. They happily are taking full advantage of cheap foreign labor. The new way of things works for them. The financial people continue to play the casinos of boom bust economies-Buy low, sell high. Not to even mention inside money and all its advantages to those in the know. Look at Hollywood-they're lovin it - tens and hundreds of millions of ticket buyers at what is it now $!@-15 a clip.G Sachs gambles with public money made 4 Billion profit last quarter pushing paper as it were. The oil cos have been very quiet???? ----%% Billion profits in 2008. Coollege costs are nutz. Where will our graduates go? I have four grandchildren. In summary -This game must change and change for the benefit of the middle class etc.”

“(conclusion)
And with more jobs becoming 33 hour no-benefits "underemployment", things can NEVER improve in this country.

Never mind cost of education and pertinent equipment skyrocketing too -- maybe that and the other factors above are why Americans are losing interest... especially with the "return on investment" - hey, that's not just for balance sheets, you know.

Now I might just agree that the 90% tax rate in 1950 was too high. But today's tax rates for the wealthiest, especially after every bit of government subsidy, bail out, tax cheat, whittling down wages... is 8% really too high?

http://www.jrlc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=81&Itemid=158
(hard cold proof, which was obtained from sources they readily provide)

Pretty low for the top as it is, before all the other subsidies, "havens", bailout money, and the rest.

By, of, and for the wealthy corporation. An oligarchy. We are not a democracy. We are a facade of one.

(and, lastly, I am not against capitalism. But what is going on is corporatism. BIG difference.)”

hypnotoad72 replied on Oct 31, 2009 at 12:55:56

“Well, if a CEO makes 500~900x what their employees earn, and continuing to drive down workers' wages just so the CEO's can go up, isn't it rather obvious at some point the deck of cards will fall?

For decades, cost of living has eclipsed wages (with wages dropping), and credit cards made it easier too - paying things in installments (with interest rates that even the ancient Romans would despise; they capped theirs at 10%. The Muslims dropped the notion of interest, claiming it was against God, since ALL is owned by God and we just use it (paraphrased from Wikipedia). )

Even the Christian Bible has far worse things to say about sneaky and greedy creditors than it does debtors... yet the politicians bought and paid for by the creditors somehow claim we're a Christian nation... yeah, right... If that's true, I am 20 feet tall, say "ho ho ho", and peddle green tomatoes.

I used to believe that people could spend wastefully. That may still be true, but I don't put as much weight into that anymore. Not when looking at the WHOLE picture.

It's also hard to get a job when you're deemed "overqualified" because they have a degree higher than "high school diploma". (Extinct are the days when such a diploma landed a good paying job when you got good grades... now it's a bachelor's degree for wages that are great for 1979 standards... but are next to impossible to live on in 2009.)

“What do you mean "not to gain further power"? Will somebody help me here.Forget about the balance of power. That is what is paralyzing progress. In a word it should be the intention of the Progressives to gain power, consolidate pwer, use power for the good of people not just the wealthy. Look here now "We" have all legs of government and who is barkinking the loudest- Lieberman. Shall we get on our knees a beg the B Dogs to come along with a robust PO? “There was a young woman on life support for many years. Rather not name her. This could be the future of the U.S. Perpetual life support of the masses while the top 5% continues to increase and consoidate the 95% of the wealth they control now. What could change it? No chance the people will rise up from ther paralysis. No barbarians from the north (Only nice Canadians). Portions of the Dem party are morphing into the newe Repugs. Progressives are still accepting their fate. The old Repub party is chasing its tail into oblivion. My point is all this coud go on and on. I hope not.”

“How do I not become totally cynical and negative now? How can I watch Ed Schultz an Keith Olberman ANYMORE? How do I look at Barack with hope as I've done fof months. And please don't tell me we accomplished this and that. I'm stunned this all is happening. And the most sickening part is that they did all these wrong things right in front of our eyes. There was no pretense, no trying to slip things through without us noticing, "They" are Obama, Rt Wing Dems, Repugs, Lobbyists, Corporations, and Wall St Even the Private Ins Cos acted right out in the open. We knew whom they were paying off and how much. This is where we are in @2009/10. Where is the Progressives yelling and screaming in pain. And what will the people do. Probably change the channel.”

dogdiva replied on Oct 29, 2009 at 07:50:35

“The problem is that we weren't getting anything smart or serious from Olbermann and Schultz. Anger is a great energizer and well deserved in this case, but without doing something committed, smart and long term, it's nothing more than self-indulgent. (not that we don't deserve a good 'wallow' from time to time) Olbermann and Schultz for all their volume are passive. We should have figured out by now this will take more prolonged commitment and action than clicking signature buttons on 50 email petitions. Throwing up our hands and stomping away is how we lost ownership of our democracy. This is going to require organization, commitment, and a real movement.

I'm getting robo calls from our local Tea Party rep. They are holding real seminars at a local college on how to 'get your voice heard' . Typical...they are screaming at the top of their lungs and have 24/7 coverage on TV, but everyone is conspiring to keep them quiet. Republicans, the Religious Right and now the Tea Party have used organization and messaging for a long time now to great effect. We really can't afford to sit in front of the TV and computer any longer and rail against their methods. There was a time when messaging and organization could be used for good. It's time to use it for our benefit.”

Conservoprogressive replied on Oct 29, 2009 at 07:40:40

“I think everyone's in shock. It's only this "cycle"(really since the 2006 midterms where Nancy promised to drain the swamp) that we have so much information available to the "public" through the internet, blogs, emails. These politicians go potty and five minutes later we know which hand they used to wipe....and it "goes viral". We've never been "on to them" like this before, and while it looks like it's a dog-pile on BHO, any rational person can look back and see DECADES of this garbage.
People are waking up, on both sides of the aisle, even though we were asleep at the wheel(and I'm pointing at myself here...the Republicans woke up in 2006 and said "What on earth is Bush doing?", but by then the 2008 eternal primaries had started and we knew he'd be leaving). I know it's a subject of mocking and laughter here...but the ORIGINAL intent of the Tea Parties was a response to the first bailout, where a barrage of emails/calls/faxes to Congress was disregarded. Sadly, fringe extreme groups joined in the rally, and the media ran toward those nuts like a moth to a flame....and now you all believe that every person at any Tea Party rally is a gun-toting functional illiterate who can't spell the words on a sign, doesn't know what they're talking about, and thinks BHO is Hitler.”

I am a proud Progressive , but I'm sick of what I see in the executive, legislative, and judicial branchesof govt. I think many, many Progressives feel this way. I feel helpless in a gigantic maelstrom of things going against the middle class and always favoring the wealthy. On and on it goes. Where is our FDR?”

“As I've posted here before, I spent the last 8 yrs screaming the TV wondering how in the world these things can go on. I thought I'd have a respite from that, but this man looked right into our eyes & told us he was going to change the "culture of corruption" in DC. He let the Bush people walk back into that WH (they never really left) with Barney's mess on their shoes & they've tracked it everywhere. I'm 54 years old, watching my husband die a little more each day because he has no health ins to treat his rheumatoid arthritis. I lost my biz, & I'm now working for 1/2 of what I had before. What I see is another President on the golf course with rich white Wall Street guys and Jewish bankers, oblivious to the sufferings of the people of this country. Obama is sliding thru the next 3 yrs banking on his buddies to pay for him to go in for another 4 yrs. It's not going to happen, & sadly, he's ruined it for any other Dem, women, or person of color for a very long time. He doesn't have the leadership skills nor the desire to do what needs to be done. Those champagne corks started popping, the designers started dressing Michelle, & Obama was overwhelmed with the attention and adoration. It's hard for a young man to handle that, especially one without the political experience or maturity to handle it.”

Is it Obama compromising too much? Are the Repugs so Artful in their political methods they cannot be ignored, or is it the Media in its play fair obsession?”

“Actually, im an independent voter (the ones your party needs most) and I have healthcare insurance...so I am not a single issue voter who voted for Obama to show up at my front door and hold my hand while doing everything for me. I wish for all people in this country to have affordable healthcare...which was exactly Obamas wish during the election. He always ran off a big vision for everyone to have affordable healthcare...but never was really specific on how he would get it done. So I still dont see why some progressives are acting as if he is betraying you because he is not screaming from the roof tops that he wants a single payer system...he has said 100 times that he feels a Public Option would be a good way to go...how many times does he need to repeat himself?

What I am is someone that is willing to give the man at least four years instead of 9 months before I make judgement...what i also am tired of is watching him get disrespected by some constituents and Republicans a like...having more death threats towards him then any President in history while people like yourself sit at the comfort of your computer whining and complaining everyday about what he hasn't done for you. Where have any of you been over the last summer....where are the pro healthcare reform marches on Washington? Exactly”
