“Sorry, Simplecomplexity is correct. The banks have ALWAYS been able to modify loans. The Obama plan made sure the banks got some fees to cover the new mods, but you'd be screaming if he gave the banks more.

So the bank could tell the homeowners "at least we tried" and then the owners would leave us the keys, so we could drain the pipes and secure the property without it freezing up. “Is this not a scam? They make you pay for mortgage insurance to cover 80% of the loan. The bank collects when they foreclose. Right now, your house is probably worth less than that, so your bank is better off if you lose and they collect insurance. Not a big loss to them! Who cares where your kids live - camper, street, shelter; BoA never sees most of us anyway.
Amortized mortgages means you pay most of the interest up front; they win again. You don't start paying towards the principle till about the 7th year. Most foreclosures happen in the first 5 years.
Fannie Mae lets you live in the property after foreclosure. You bet you pay rent! So now they have you maintaining their property and you pay for the privilege!”
