NYT On Housing Crisis: 'Things Didn't Have To Get This Bad' But We Can Still 'Avert The Worst'

“Greed.
The true cause of this whole mess and the reason why recovery will be slow and painful. Wall street and mortgage people wanted profit, not just a little, they wanted a lot , fast. They gambled to get it with other people's money.
Now the banks are slow in giving loans, they make more foreclosing than in trying to keep people in their houses.
So, until people can harness their greed, no policy, no plan will work.”

“I have yet to figure out what it is that the right wingers are so upset about. They say no to everything without putting anything on the table themselves as an alternative. They don't define what it is they are for, only that they are against everything the dems put forth, regardless of any facts. Defining Obama as a radical is clear evidence that this guy is looking at the world through a pair of glasses that are not in touch with reality.
What 'radical' policy or legislation has Obama made into law? How about removing habeas corpus? No, the repubs did that. How about doing wiretaps without warrants? No, the repubs did that also. How about declaring the VP outside of any legislative or executive authority? No, Cheney did that. Well, how about destroying the country economically? No, the repubs did that, too. So what makes Obama (or Pelosi, or ...) a radical? Now I got it, he is trying to make sure all Americans have access to health care (shameful!!). Yep, that radical alright, how dare he put people ahead of profit?”

Ridge: Terror Suspect Doesn't Deserve Constitution's 'Full Range Of Protections'
Commented Dec 29, 2009 at 11:23:11 in Politics
“Dangerous ground here folks. As much as I think these guys should be strung up to dry, its dangerous to start deciding who does or does not get the protection accorded by the Constitution. Who will be next, as always once exceptions are made, others follow. Who has the right to make that decision? Just the POTUS, SCOTUS or would you like one of our illustrious senators that kiss lobbyist fannies to determine it? Would it be only for certain crimes or arbitrarily determined case by case (by whom?). Either we are a country of our laws or we are not. If we chose to walk away from our laws and the Constitution that made us who we are, then we'll deserve what we get.”
Republicans Poised To Run On Health Care Repeal Campaign
Commented Dec 28, 2009 at 17:18:21 in Politics
“"Republicans have a truck full of ideas on how to expand access, improve quality, and lower costs..."
If they have so many good ideas, why haven't they put any of these out during the bill writing process? Where were all those ideas during the committee meetings or when being asked by the press as to what they were offering (remember the scant few pages they offered at one time?).
This is either blatant BS or a gross exaggeration of reality.”

McConnell Hints That GOP Will Campaign On Repealing Health Care Reform
Commented Dec 28, 2009 at 10:15:44 in Politics
“I know that everyone is blaming Obama and, "the buck stops here" (at the POTUS); but a lot that Obama wanted didn't get into the bill. For that matter, a lot that the public wants (and needs) didn't get into either bill either - the price of not having a lot of cash to throw at our so-called elected officials. Remember, the bills were written by the members of each respective house (HoR and Senate), and Obama can only try to influence what they put in or take out. I really blame the congress, especially the dems, much more so than Obama, for writing bills that kiss health insurance a**.”

“The perception you are describing is a product of a very vocal 'fundamental' movement that is extreme right wing combined with silence, or at best, just murmurs, from the moderate and more progressive Christians. I do not hear Christians standing up and disavowing the rantings of hatred, judgmentalism, and bigotry being spewed forth 'in the name of God' by the more extreme 'Christian' groups. These right wing groups claim to be Christian, claim to represent the teachings of JC, and appear to represent Christians as a whole. With only silence in protest from other Christians, their claims go unchallenged and are accepted as real. My question is, when will Christians finally stand up and take their Christianity back?”

“In theory, correct. The poor and, increasingly, the middle class, will have to bear the young if they can't afford an abortion on their own, the rich always have options. Interesting is the lack of talk about how to promote methods to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. Also, missing is the talk about how to promote good prenatal care to reduce the number of pregnancies that get into trouble.”

“What the bank is doing and its reaction, is just another example of why I describe this as the most Un-American response to a national crisis I have ever seen. Almost every time in the past, when the country has faced a crisis, people, companies, political parties came together to deal with the problem. Not this time. This time it is all about "me". The banks make more money foreclosing a mortgage than helping people out, they are not loaning out the recovery act loan money because they can't make enough profit doing it, then they raise interest rates to maximize their profit. All of which only makes the problem worse. Employers are driving employees harder to keep productivity high with fewer employees. Political parties fight each other, not with trying to come up with the best solution, often not even offering a solution of their own, but only trying to gain political points.
Nobody is looking at the big picture and responding with a 'what's best for all of us, how can we all win" only with "what's best for me". A selfish and Un-American response that will only continue to hurt the country as a whole.”

They complain that Pres Obama doesn't represent 'traditional American values', yet we just had 8 years of secrecy, warrentless wiretapping, a VP that basically declared himself outself outside the reach of the law, a new 'litmus' test for purity that fits a fascist philosophy to a T, and members who lie through their teeth without hesitation. They have redefined 'American values" to something that most of us and the majority of the founding fathers couldn't recognize.
