What is the "Message" Behind Increased Gun Sales?

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 18:23:04 in Politics

“"Its beyond me why people draw this conclusion that increase in gun says are directly a result of President Obama."

Not President Obama, at least not for me. After seeing the mess that was the Bush Administration, it was certain that the next President was going to be a Democrat. And considering that the enhanced control or outright banning of certain guns is part of the Democratic Party platform, stocking up simply makes sense. I started in April 2007, when I (like everyone else) thought it was going to be Mrs. Pres. Clinton. Being surprised that a different Democrat won the job doesn't change the overall concern.”

“"Avowed liberals consider themselves to be loyal to the truth while die-hard conservatives seem only to be loyal. Somewhere in the middle lies the perfect American."

Um, no. Both sides are merely loyal to their side's talking points. "Truth" as such, is a malleable thing, easily bent to whatever point of view a given individual has. This has corrupted the debate to such an extent that citing actual facts can and are dismissed out of hand. I've seen this regularly demonstrated on both sides. Nobody can claim any sort of high ground, because there isn't any. Both Republicans and Democrats say anything to win elections, and then ignore those promises once sworn into office.

The Republicans aren't "the enemy", they're the competition. "The Enemy", as such, is the culture that exists in DC and the various state capitols that enact laws and proulgate regulations which benefit a small, connected group and ignore the rest of us.”

“Wrong. She was killed by her husband. He used a gun. There was violence in that house, and she had finally decided to take the kids and leave him, so he shot her.

If there weren't a gun in the house, he would have strangled or beaten her to death.

Quit blaming the object.”

LeftRight replied on Oct 11, 2009 at 12:19:16

“He MIGHT have strangled her or beaten her to death, or used a kitchen knife. We don't actually KNOW whether he would have done any of those things or not.

There are a lot of people who wouldn't resort to violence to the point of death were they not using a gun. Most gang members will shoot someone, but wouldn't be willing to beat that same person to death with a baseball bat, for example.

I'm not advocating banning guns, nor am I saying that this man wouldn't have killed his wife had he not had a gun, but I AM saying that we need to actually sit down and discuss this without all the vitriol....”

Congress: We Need You to Lead

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 01:22:34 in Politics

“Congress? Lead?

You want those myopic narcissists to lead?

Heaven help us all.

Better to send every one of them on a research junket to the Pacific to investigate salt-water snails, this way they won't sell us out, won't ignore their constituents in favor of the last lobbyist to pick up the bar tab, won't project one image while engaging in dubious behavior.

Congress leading? That'll be the death of us all.”

“Of course guns are not enough. One needs at passive support from the populace, discontent in the gov't ranks, and a few other things.

And distorting what I typed into holding out against the US military is 'magical thinking' on your part.

This is a difficult enough subject without you throwing a tantrum when someone disagrees with you.”

Paul Hackett replied on Oct 07, 2009 at 23:39:42

“Nobody is 'distorting' what you wrote. All I did was point out the patent silliness of bringing up examples from world war 2 when talking about this issue.”

“You're a little off on some details here. There's the plane itself, and then there's the weapons it carries, which are automatic and are therefore subject to the 1934 NFA. There are all sorts of ex-Combloc toys available on the open market:

Czech made BMP-2 : About $16,000, but the cannon has to be demilled.
MiG 21, minus the cannon are being flown here in this country.
Delta-class Russian submarines for a mere $495,000, minus all the weapons.”

“Sorry, but you're missing a vital component here: owning a rifle (or whatever) isn't some magic talisman. Without the will or intent to use it, a gun is no more than an expensive and poorly designed club at best, and more likely a dust collector.

There were lots of guns in Saddam's Iraq, too. Without the will to use them, they're useless, just as they're useless in Iran.

As for that silly "rifles are useless against planes and tanks" meme, look up both Russian and American military histories. There are numerous places where a sniper or two held up hundreds, and sometimes thousands of troops during WW2.”

Paul Hackett replied on Oct 07, 2009 at 18:57:23

“No, YOU"RE missing the vital component. My point is that just having guns isn't enough to allow a revolution to be successful, there are ZERO examples of the citizenry overthrowing the miliatary/police in any popular revolution over the past 60 years. The only times that popular revolutions are successful is when they live up to their name and are actually popular - thus the police and military join in on the side of the revolutionaries and and turn against the regime in power.

Your fantasy that you're going to be able to hold out against the US military with a rifle is patently absurd. Good luck with your magical thinking.”

“In aggregate, there are more than 20,000 gun laws on the books in this country.

And they are usually enforced at the whim of the local police department. You or I could get hammered by some PO trying to make his bones, but his best friend who saws off a shotgun barrel or something equally illegal will never see the inside of a courtroom.”

Why All the Booing?

Commented Oct 06, 2009 at 05:16:27 in Entertainment

“What an amazing display of arrogance!

These productions get rightly booed whenever the set designer or director starts to think that 'their' artistry outweighs the work being performed. You want to stage some avant-garde version of Tosca or Tristan u. Isolde? Then compose an opera of the same quality, and then you can bugger it up to your heart's content.

Until then, you need to remember that Puccini, Wagner, et alia, belong to all of us, and very few opera lovers are so bereft of imagination that some off the wall staging is anything other than an unwelcome distraction.

Even Carmen Jones was presented as film entertainment, not as opera, and that was one of the best adaptations ever.”

So much for the vaunted 'boycott' It's working just as well as the one against Whole Foods.”

“So long as you feel the need to call people who disagree with you 'wingnuts', you're better off keeping your opinions to yourself.

This goes for the pro-gun folks here as well. No need for name calling.

The White House said that Chris (the black man with the black rifle) was well within his Rights. Clearly, you gun control folks are losing the argument, but as you do, please remember that some things cannot be unsaid.”
