Also sign up with LinkedIn and network. Contact the Cancer Society and see if there is a family group that you can talk to since you aren't the first person to have to deal with this.

You have skills. Don't give up. We're here if you need to talk.”

“And return the tax rates on the upper 1% to pre-Reagan era levels and you have a plan.”

Lori Bowles replied on Oct 10, 2009 at 01:55:19

“I think that was a 49% tax on the 1% and a partial regulation on the system so ya thats a big start to a boost in the economy. Right now money is being siphoned out of the country, this way money would start flowing creating jobs.
Staying the same is not the answer.”

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Note the very specific term, well regulated. I know the NRA tends to leave this part out, but if you look at the actual document, it's in there. The founding fathers saw no problem with regulation in this area, if fact they mention it quite specifically.

Oh, and here's the statistics on homicides from the Bureau of Justice
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/tables/totalstab.htm which shows that since the Brady Bill on background checks went through in 1993 homicides have dropped from 9.5 per 100,000 to 5.6 per 100,000 which is approximately 8,832 people a year.”

“Tyler, people who are using straw purchasers and back door sales aren't law abiding citizens - they are people with criminal records or history of mental illness who wouldn't be able to buy a gun legally.

Nobody here HA.TES guns - they have issues with arms dealers who will sell to those who aren't allowed to have guns, those who are irresponsible in their storage and handling of firearms and those who misuse the privilege.

If you don't have a criminal background or a history of mental illness, you purchase your gun legally, store it responsibly, always keep in mind that it is a weapon and not a toy and not use it as a means of criminal intimidation, there's absolutely no problem with having a gun.

The gun dealers who will sell to your buddy with a domestic violence history will also sell to the terrorist looking to kill you for enough money. I don't think anyone wants to make it any easier on them to get weapons.”

“The Bush administration knew exactly what it was doing. It couldn't ignore the outcry from the American people concerning irresponsible gun sales but at the same time it couldn't afford to ti.ck off the NRA since they donate a lot of $$ to keep guns in the wrong hands, so they claimed support of the instant background checks but reduced funding to the ATF who are to keep an eye on the gun dealers who are illegally supplying guns to gangs, militia, terrorists and common criminals.”

“In any situation you can find people who created the situation they are in.

The situation we have here is slightly different. You have severe deregulation of banking and credit corporations and instead of these institutions being responsible they acted as you described, they tried for the quick buck using junk bonds, over-leveraged derivatives and hiding bad debts in phoney accounting. People who have worked their whole lives have lost their homes, their retirement and their jobs because others wanted the fast buck.

You are just lucky that your employers line of credit wasn't stopped, or their loans weren't recalled forcing them to tighten the belt and close locations and let long term employees go. I understand that it's easier to deal with to think, "I've been good and responsible, it only happens to bad irresponsible people" but that's not how life works. This is happening to responsible, practical people who are losing jobs, retirement funds and homes through no fault of their own.

Frightening, but very true.”

“In the case of the foreclosure I'm buying the woman who owned it before worked in real estate and still was too stupid to realize she was paying hundreds of thousands over what it was really worth. In the end her son lived there and would drag race down the street with friends. I found this out by asking a neighbor who had to call the police on many occasions. These weren't victims. These were idiots.”

Phil22 replied on Sep 23, 2009 at 19:46:28

“I'm sitting here reading people's comments and wondering if some of the the people replying actually read what I wrote.

Nowhere in my response did I write that I blame people who lost jobs, etc. People need to read the second paragraph. We all know what happened with crazy loans, etc.

My question is: What makes people look at a property that two years before was half the price and think, "Great, I'll buy that with 0 down with a fluctuating interest rate and everything will turn out okay"? Or people who refinanced and refinanced using their homes as ATM's to go on vacations, buy stuff and not realize they were getting in over their heads. Some of these people were smart people. I know some of them, so what happened? Not all of them were duped. Some of them must have had second thoughts at some point and still went ahead. It's not as if guns were being put to their heads.

And to all those of you who think that greed only exists in large banking institutions I say to you that I have yet to meet Jesus or anyone like that in my lifetime in banking or out.

The internet is great, but I do find that people don't seem willing to take the time to read (or proof read for that matter) before they spew.”

Christian Fundamentalist Terrorism

Commented Jun 02, 2009 at 19:30:16 in Politics

“Maybe if we heard real Christians protesting when these hate-mongers spew this filth and they made it clear that real Christians don't agree with this bigotry and these threats of violence, it would help. But if all we hear are the bigots, racists and terrorists calling themselves Christians and the real Christians stay silent in front of such evil, people will eventually assume that this behavior is condoned by believers of this religion.

Those who are truly believers in Christ better learn to speak up and defend their religion from those who call themselves Christians as they spread hate and bigotry or be willing to have those looking in only see the filth that, at this time, makes more noise. If they don't take back their identity, they are apt to lose it ,and only those looking for a religion willing to allow them their hate will join.

That would indeed be tragic.”

I do so constantly in this threads, as do other Christians. Typically, I'm mistaken for a far-right-wing hater of gays and women, or told I'm a cretin for being a believer, or simply trolled (paging John from C.) for the crime of posting something.

If I had a dollar for every time I've been told that moderate Christianity is an impossibility, I'd be on one lavish vacation right now.”

“We real Christians are out here and we are protesting in ways we can! I do and I am in public places and internet sites where I can. I use Frank Schaeffer's information as much as possible to promote sound thinking. Unfortunately, nut cases and the right-wing are so loud, along with Fox News. the problem is then all fundamental Christians get lumped into the stupidity with these people. They ruin it for everyone - I mean everyone - Christians and nonChristians alike.”

“Timothy McViegh resigned from the NRA several years before the Oklahoma bombing specifically because he did NOT agree with their policies. New Sherlock Holmes trailer... it's EXTREME!!!

Commented May 20, 2009 at 00:07:53 in Entertainment

“I appreciate Downey as an actor but whoever wrote this obviously never read a Sherlock Holmes story in his life. I detest these movies where some uninformed pup of a writer decides that a classic needs to be "modernized" in order to be palatable for the young. It's like saying that young adults will only learn to appreciate fine art if it is photoshopped with the Simpsons or SpongeBob Squarepants.

Had the writer any actual knowledge or appreciation of Conan Doyle's character and any modicum of talent, he wouldn't felt the need to turn Holmes into a Victorian character out of 90210.”

“The thing that bothers me is that we have heard nothing from McCain since. Shouldn't he, as a leader, make a statement apologizing for the dangerous situation his volunteer and staff put the citizens of Pittsburgh and the country in?

We are incredibly lucky that some innocent man who happens to fit the man up description wasn't injured or killed in retaliation.

McCain and his people don't care about bringing this country together, they figure they can only get what's in their best interest by pulling the country apart.”
