“oh god, first of all I cannot even begin to tell you how horribly sorry I am that you had to experience, even if it was not carried out to the fullest extent, something so horrific and traumatic, and then to have people be dismissive and act like it doesn't count or isn't equal to female rape- you know- I study philosophy, and people always ask why I don't want to specialize in ethics- and my God, its because of things just like this- it's just so emotionally draining and depressing. I spend so much of my free time reading about the state of humanity and debating about it only to come out even more despairing! and that is the irony- for women you have the one set of issues, and then for men, it's supposed to not be any issue at all- as if there IS no such thing as rape- the whole "man up" scenario. Or, "it can't be as bad" scenario. Unbelievable. And it's like you said about adult females with teenage boys- so many don't consider that rape- just that the boys are "lucky" and champs. I mean my God, the perversity of people's attitudes, and the repercussions on the victims- it's truly unbearable. I truly hope your recovery is going well. It never goes away, but you do learn to become a warrior :)”

“ugh they just deleted my whole comment- why, huffpo?! I just wrote first of all that I apologize- I often these days assume that's what people mean because I have been told outright that women don't care about male rape, but you did not ever say that and I'm sorry for incorrectly assuming that! And you are absolutely correct about prison rape- there is actually a very disturbing connection to be made with rape culture in general when you look at the vigilante joy people find in shaming and in fact celebrating male rape in prison- people see rape, I'd say consciously in prison rape, and subconsciously in date rape, as a form of justice for what they believe are moral transgressions. Oh, you robbed someone, you deserve to be raped in jail. Oh, you are a loose woman, you brought a rape on yourself. That's profoundly disturbing and it's embedded in our mentality. Another thing I have been trying to find more info on in the past few months is heterosexual male on male rape in the military. I have heard that not only is there more of that kind of sexual assault than female sexual assault in the military, but that the men ARE shamed and punitive actions are taken against them for reporting it. It's unacceptable that more information isn't available and that this isn't being made more public.”

Skellington 187 on Mar 30, 2014 at 22:52:15

“Accepted, thank you. I tend to react similarly because I have been told, in effect, that my (only attempted but still...) victimization is somehow less valid or doesn't matter at all simply because she was female and I am male.”

“I should add something- I am confident that this is the case with male on male homosexual rape- I would not doubt for an instant that homosexual men are treated with the same disrespect, and shaming that happens to women. We are still so prejudiced as a society. Furthermore, you have the whole issue of assuming that there was potential consent, that the victim actually wanted it to begin with, and given the prejudices, that the male was simply promiscuous and morally degenerate to begin with. It would be a very interesting study to conduct. And furthermore, I hope one day that straight men will come forward and report rape more often so that we can collect more data on their experience with the legal system. God knows I don't envy their experience, because if it would be as crucifying as a females, they will be left more traumatized than the rape itself. I can attest to that as a survivor who reported her rape.”

“my comment there was in reference to male on male rape, but this is the case- do people doubt that priests rape boys? Did most people doubt the boys involved in the Sandusky scandal? People assume that a straight man's sexual assault would be unwarranted, but they don't assume that when a woman is sexually assaulted. Or are you talking about male rape in the military or homosexual men raping other homosexual men? People obviously assume men are raped in prison and they belive it, but nobody doubts that the prison system is a corrupt atrocity. The and part of the POINT is that they aren't blamed/shamed. You act, as many do, that women who address rape culture don't care about male victims of rape, which is frankly offensive. It is as if asserting that black civil rights advocates don't care about the rights of the handicapped. They are fighting for equality, but addressing the situation as it is unique to them- every situation is unique as well as possessing overarching similarities, and trying to create dissention is harmful to the cause.”

Skellington 187 on Mar 30, 2014 at 17:06:40

“"You act, as many do, that women who address rape culture don't care about male victims of rape, which is frankly offensive." I didn't say nor imply that. If that is something you inferred, I'm sorry for not being more clear.

Prison rape is shamed. Otherwise it wouldn't be regularly treated as a joke in probably 90% of cases. The problem here is that you're comparing men raped in prison/church scandals with rape of women in the general population. In the context of prison rape, yes it tends to be believed, probably due to frequency of such. Within the population at large, however, male victims of any kind of sexual assault are regularly shamed or flat out ignored. Look through the comments on ANY article talking about male victims for a litany of examples.

I'm not here to try and create any kind of dissension. I'm simply pointing out that victims are victims regardless of who they are or the circumstances of their attack; and to say that male victims are somehow not shamed, victim blamed or just completely ignored is counterproductive.”

“Do you mean adult male victims of an adult female? When that happens, it's a god-awful thing that is obviously just as bad, but first of all I don't think you can assert, with a straight face, that that is an epidemic such as men committing rape on either sex or rape of children. Nobody is saying that is excusable. The irony, however, is that when such an atrocity occurs, it has to do with our patriarchal culture- men are supposed to be "men", and must be dominant creatures who are assumed to be the controllers of all situations- if it is assumed that they "tell" women what to do, then how, according to our culture, can they be raped? It is horrific, and it shows why, when this situation occurs, men do get scoffed at in this situation. It shows why men think it's cool when an adult woman rapes a teenage boy, and why that situation cannot possibly be rape as well.”

Skellington 187 on Mar 30, 2014 at 15:16:16

“Yes, adult female (or male for that matter) on adult male. You said, "And as far as adult male rape goes, men, when they report it, are believed." My point is that that is factually incorrect, especially when the perp is female. Yes, they aren't blamed/shamed in quite the same way as female victims, but they are far from always believed.”

“every one of those stories I have seen the teacher has been arrested and sentenced. And as far as the posters are concerned, it is another dynamic. First of all, in that dynamic- it is not the same- we are talking about the specific demographic of underage teens and boys. The majority of MALE posters do treat it as either a conquest or that the boy is "lucky"- and that is horrific and despicable. However, they do NOT treat the boys as morally dubious in nature, which is what the rape culture implies about women. Major distinction. And as far as adult male rape goes, men, when they report it, are believed. Women are assumed to be liars when the man in question is someone they know or have been on a date with. Their moral character comes into question, and this is not true for either child or adult victims. That is what lies at the heart of rape culture in terms of females.”

“you are missing the point - this is not about whether rape happens- this is about whether the victim is believed or whether society feels the victim was responsible, and in these dynamics are unique to women because only they are judged morally in a sexual context. People don't doubt when they hear stories of men being raped in prison or boys being molested by priests- its assumed. However, when you bring up women being raped, people become skeptical and speculate as to how many of them are liars or were partially responsible for precipitating the assault. And if Dylan was a little boy and Woody Allen was a priest, there would be no wagons circled around him. These are the dynamics unique to women. This is about rape as it pertains to women.”

Misha101 on Mar 29, 2014 at 15:24:54

“I'm sorry, Nastasya, that is not accurate. Believability is not unique to women. As often reported here in HP, when an adolescent male is sexually accosted by a female teacher the authorities may believe the sex occurred but often treat it as a conquest not rape. That's just another example of authorities not getting the message that it has nothing to do with sex but with control.”

I would probably get my message deleted, so let me just say that many of these categories were not what I'd expect outside of the race, college, mom and lesbian, cream pie and pov- I mean some of the most major are missed- I'm incredulous that a**l, oral, group, and interracial and bdsm did not show up. and seriously why distinguish "ebony" from black and Japanese from Asian?”

I flat iron it twice a month, sometimes three times a month, and that is it. And get your trims and deep condition- I deep condition every single time. I really think that if you take steps like this you will be absolutely fine. Using the flat iron extremely sparingly will be okay if you use a styling product before applying the iron as well.”
