Parenting Crisis: The Santa Claus Lie

Parenting Crisis: The Santa Claus Lie

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 21:32:50 in Living

“i agree. i think telling kids a lie like that is a bad idea. they will think back once they learn the truth, remembering all the times you happily dissembled, all the work you went to to deceive them, coupling that with the sadness and disappointment they feel that the magic and kindness santa represents is not a real thing. right, i know, i'm being dramatic. and sure, we can tell ourselves santa is a metaphor, etc, and there really IS generosity in the world etc...and it may not "damage" a child or make them love you less. but it will steal a piece of magic from them. and i see no need for that. there is plenty of magic in the world and we can communicate that to our kids without setting them up to one day be impressed with how great their parents were at playing the world's biggest longest practical joke on a kid.”

The New Old Face of Racism

Commented Dec 10, 2009 at 15:31:06 in Politics

“"Curby13" wants to get rid of "Stupid Titles." That's funny.

Anyway, you contradict yourself. If you feel "That would be perfect, but racism will never go away" then you admit there will always be a need for the historically abused and oppressed peoples to separate and support themselves. No matter how you commit to "fighting racism" on blog threads, people like you sure aren't going to fight that fight by calling our self-identification "stupid."”

curby 13 replied on Dec 10, 2009 at 16:22:32

“First off I don't fight racism on blogs. I am on the streets risking my life battling nazi's. I am a S.H.A.R.P.(SkinH@#d Against Racial Prejudice) I fight using my mind and boots. No I don't admit that oppressed peoples need to seperate and support themselves. Seperating yourselves is only goign to create more division, because of people crying for special treatment. As His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia told the League of Nations " Until the colour of a mans skin is of no more relevance than the colour of his eyes there will be war." To keep yourself seperated only paints a target on the people. Why cant you just identify yourself as a member of the human race no more, no less.”

curby 13 replied on Dec 10, 2009 at 15:55:12

“First off I don't fight racism on blogs. If I did that I wouldn't be any better than many people on this site. I am a S.H.A.R.P.(SkinHead Against Racial Prejudice) I am on the streets battling any racist I come by. How is it I won't win the fight with that logic. Are you to blind to see that titles like that just seperate yourselves along racial lines. You are giving racist the ability to target you because you feel that you need to seperate yourselves by the color of your skin. You see His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia said to the League of Nations " Until the colour of a mans skin is of no more importance than the colour of his eyes there will be war." You perpetuate the racism by seprating yourselves instead of just calling yourself a man or American.”

The Perils Of Skepticism

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 23:37:44 in Living

“Love this one. So true. A sense of wonder. Wonder is...Wonder is the style Joy dons to cartwheel down the catwalk of a well-loved life. Wonder are the shades that a grateful walker wears. Wonder is what keeps everything brand new, full of potential, unknown, beautiful....

Why is it that so many have lost this? Why is it that we correlate apathy or cynicism with learnedness? How sad.

Thanks for writing something on wonder. Yeah. This is needed.”

JohnMayer replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 00:33:01

“Nezua, I think you summed up Deepak’s thoughts, or lack thereof, much more succinctly than he was able to do. And without telling us how all skeptics think, too!”

Should we get rid of anything that offends anyone then?”

“"The experts agree"? Well...we can find an "expert" for anything we want to reinforce. But this post feels a bit sad to me. As if it draws a false dichotomy of Real Despair/Forced Laughter. We do manifest our reality. And when pain comes, we let it wash through us, forcing nothing. But there is such thing as creating and contributing to your own destiny and it does have to do with which way you aim, and what energy you nurture.”
