“All over the country, we've been cutting back on public mental health since 1981. The process was begun by Ronald Reagan, who cut back drastically on the federal funds available to states for public mental health programs. Thus was born a long process of "de-institutionalization," a whitewash code word for evicting hundreds of thousands of mental patients from public institutions. Public psychiatric hospitals have been closed wholesale all over the country, and the long-promised "community programs" that were supposed to take up the slack remain largely a myth. So now the patients live in our prisons, under our bridges, and frequently in our emergency rooms - sometimes for a week or longer. There is no political will in this country to provide the services the seriously and persistently mentally ill require. This is obscene.”

Sprinks678 on Aug 15, 2012 at 09:38:19

“I love your comment. It's so well put. Would we treat those with heart disease, kidney failure, lung disease or other dysfunction in the same way that we treat those with a disease of the brain? Imagine cardiac care units being shut down and heart failure patients being put out on the streets. It would never happen.

The hospital in my town doesn't even have a psychiatrist on staff, yet the local mental health clinic suggests going there in the event that they can't get someone in for an office visit in a timely manner. My daughter has type 2 bipolar disorder and was having a psychotic episode prior to a depressive episode. After waiting 5 hours to be seen at the ER, the attending physician told us there was nothing he could do. We're in a rural area and I had to drive for nearly three hours to another hospital while she was grabbing the steering wheel and fighting me. This was very early in her diagnosis. She's now a properly medicated, successful, college senior with nearly any symptoms. If it weren't for me as her advocate, it's hard to tell where she would be. There are so many mentally ill people who have no one to fight for their treatment. The government needs to step in and help them.”

“F&F Nick English, excellent post. Yes lord, I was young when this started happening to our mental people. It was an institution where I lived that just let all of the people out, walking the streets. I use to see them sitting at the bus stop with pj's on. I was young then, and didn't understand what was going on until my mother told me that these people were in the mental instititutions and they released them all. Now I think its only like 2 mental hospitals left here where I live, and my friend works at one of them and she said they were overcrowded with people now. Someone really needs to address this and soon.”

TH92 on Aug 14, 2012 at 21:23:35

“SUMMARY CONTINUED: Congress passed laws so that the mentally ill would be eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, Food stamps, Federal housing, etc... It gave state legislators a way out. Deinstitutionalization took place from 1960 to 1980 reducing the number of patients from 500,000 to under 100,000. Congress used the $3 billion that was supposed to be used for the mental health facilities toward Watergate and Vietnam. The drug Thorazine didn't always work. Therefore people with chronic mental illness began appearing on street corners, in jails, and prisons.”

TH92 on Aug 14, 2012 at 21:21:32

“This is a summary from a book I read: In 1952 Henri Laborit, a surgeon in Paris experimented with a drug called chlorpromazine that had been developed to treat allergies. He used it to sedate his patients before surgery. He was surprised by the results and thought it could be used to treat the mentally ill. His findings were not accepted with open arms. He convinced Pierre Deniker, a psychiatrist, to treating patients with schizophrenia. They were amazed at the results. Again findings were not welcomed with open arms overseas or in America by doctors. The company that had developed the drug sold the rights to Smith Kline. Because of the lack of acceptance from the medical community Smith Kline decided to have Pierre Deniker to meet with legislators because they thought it could save them millions of dollars. The drug was marketed as Thorazine. It claimed to be a wonder drug that cures most mental illnesses. In 1961 the drugs impact reached the White House. President Kennedy made mental illness a priority. He signed a $3 billion dollar national mental health law that was supposed to construct a national network of community mental health facilities. They would replace the state mental hospitals. Then came a dispute over doctors who claimed that their patients were mentally ill. A series of events led to a snowball effect that gained speed with the 1960's civil rights movement”
