Bloomberg's Breastfeeding Program, 'Latch On NYC,' Wants Hospitals To Change Baby Formula Protocol

Commented Jul 30, 2012 at 12:21:04 in New York

“IRRELEVANT!!”

ALE515 on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:26:25

“What is? Your CAPS abuse, the fact that formula fed babies aren't dying off, or the fact that the Mayor should be worrying about the crime in this city instead?”

“This article is only discussing the fact the hospitals want moms to know what they are feeding their baby. Like Tylenol, like anything, they talk to you first. It does not say anything about the later use of formula. It discusses how you STILL get FREE formula even if you DON'T NEED IT at the hospital. Not sure what this has to do with 3 months later...”

“Are you a mother? Because you comment as if you are not and have not experienced this.”

QRPetCodes on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:32:40

“You sure do like caps. I'm assuming the point of this whole thing, BASED ON THE ACTUAL CAMPAIGN AD THEY CREATED, is that they don't want mothers to use formula at all. 3 months later some mothers actually do go back to work. I don't remember typing that they go back the NEXT day.”

syds180turn on Jul 30, 2012 at 13:24:09

“We have read the article and it is not anyone's business what a women chooses to do. We don't need people, particularly men, to lecture us on our decisions. Bloomberg needs to get his darn nose out of women's business and other women who support this needs to do the same.”

Secondbecky on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:44:33

“You are correct, but no need to yell. Even so, I didn't think of the free bottles of formula I got from my hospital and pediatrician as marketing materials, just something very helpful to me when I needed it. What's the difference between my pediatrician giving me a sample of claritin and a sample of formula?”

jasaplay on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:28:45

“We have read the article and we think Bloomberg is a nosy fart and should mind his own damn business.
He wants to tell people how much soda to drink. He wants to control new mothers' choices on feeding their infants. He's a pol who wants to keep his name in the headlines.
Seriously, doesn't he have any work to do so that he'll leave people alone and keep his nose out of their business??”

“The CAPS is getting old. Insurance is charged for every Tylenol you're given. Obviously, you're charged for formula, just as you're charged for your meals (in your hospital stay -- like the peanuts you get on a plane -- they're not free). No one is complaining about paying for formula, they're (justifiably) complaining about being told what to do with their child and getting a lecture if they don't conform to what the mayor wants.”

Secondbecky on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:58:26

“TRIVIAL? Not really. It's common courtesy on blogs these days to not use all caps because it's considered screaming. For you to constantly scream at us while we are trying to have a rational debate with you is not really trivial, but offensive.

Your comments only make you sound unintelligent, especially when coupled with the screaming.

I care very deeply about my child's health, wellness, and intelligence. Don't judge because I supplemented with formula. And don't you dare judge others who made a decision that was best for their family.”

“We are reading the article. Perhaps you should understand that the whole idea of Mayor Bloomboob getting involved in this issue is what's totally wrong. Stay out of the infant-feeding business and stick to the thousand of issues the mayor was elected to do.”

ladyangelnyc on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:46:09

“P.S. - since you seem to be on the Michael Bloomberg crusade train why don't you get on the crusade to make using breast pumps at hospitals more affordable or God-forbid free?! Women who's children won't latch on, but will take a bottle find themselves in an awful conundrum when the price to rent a breast pump is in some cases almost the same as the hospital room a woman is staying in and many insurances don't cover the pumping machines...so if they wanted to breastfeed they can't using hospital equipment. But keep thinking this issue is the simple black and white you are making it out to be.”

ladyangelnyc on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:19:02

“I did read the article.  Why don't YOU try reading it.  Or better yet try reading up on what happens in states that "promote" breast feeding only.  Have you ever had issues with breast feeding?  Know the torture a woman goes through when her child doesn't latch on?  See the tears on a woman's face when she thinks she is a failure as a mother within the first few hours of her having her child???  How about when those women are told, "well we'll give the baby formula for now, but you need to get a lactation specialist for your 'problem'"  If you did you'd understand what is the need for comprehensive lessons in feeding and not just these programs that alienate women who can't breast feed.  Promotion should be given with realistic expectation and right now it is not.”

Amanda Hout Howell on Jul 30, 2012 at 12:05:31

“It isn't about being given the formula or not given the formula, it is about hearing a lecture about how great breastfeeding is and not being able to do it. This makes mothers feel guilty about something their bodies are incapable of doing. I am all for giving information about breastfeeding and making it more accessible for mothers to breastfeed in public, pump at work etc., but I know how it feels to be told that you aren't doing the very best for your baby when your body won't allow you to.”

PCCNYC on Jul 30, 2012 at 11:41:05

“Actually, maybe you should read the article more carefully. If you opt for formula, you have to sign it out and get a lecture on why you should breastfeed instead (according to the NY Post every time you opt for the formula). Who the hell needs that? If they want to educate mothers, give them a handout after they give birth. There's no need to shame a mother into doing something she doesn't want to, or maybe can't even do for whatever reason.”

Most - and I mean most - mothers would rather breast feed because breast milk is free and the infant gets the mother’s anti-bodies, however, some mothers have a problem developing milk. This is not something a government official, especially nanny state Bloomberg, should be getting involved in. Doesn’t he have an unemployment issue to solve or something?”
