The New Arms Race

Commented Nov 20, 2009 at 17:33:12 in Green

“All simply to avoid the Bush Depression.

But why are you ignoring the 5 TRILLION DOLLAR REPUBLICAN DEFICIT - more than half of the current projected 10 year deficit - still on the books from the time period of 2001-2003? The unfunded, put-it-on-the-credit-card-Republican tax cuts and Medicare Advantage that tacked on 5 TRILLION DOLLARS TO THE CURRENT 10 YEAR DEFICIT.

Judging by your skewed perspective you must be one of those War and Deficit Republicans.”

“"mandating everyone buy health insurance is absurd"

Do explain!

Or do you just not understand that if everyone is not paying their part - even if it includes not paying when it comes to the poor - then the system will be overburdened when the time comes to provide care for someone who has opted out.

It's in the basic nature, one of the underlying premises, of the insurance business! The vast majority of people are able to get FAR more than they've paid in when they need it BECAUSE everyone pays up front. Anyone not participating are dipping into a system that they have opted not to participate in. The uninsured are a huge problem for both health care and health insurance since the health care industry would have to account for optional delinquents like you suggest we allow and charge the rest of us more. Now THAT sounds absurd to me!”

RichardU replied on Nov 21, 2009 at 04:53:47

“The health insurance mandate will still leave uninsured, and even the insured leave unpaid medical bills. Illegal immigrants are excluded from most of the legislation, so they will still be going to emergency rooms without insurance. More medical bills are left unpaid by the insured than the uninsured. More people go bankrupt from being unable to afford medical bills that are insured than go bankrupt that are uninsured. You are foolish if you think mandatory insurance solves our problems.

People need to understand health insurance is not health care. I find it absurd that so many people are being duped into providing for-profit corporations hundreds of millions of guaranteed customers at $20,000+ a year in premiums.

Think about this: someone making 134% of the FPL will get some not so great health insurance. Now that this person is insured, do you think they can afford the copays for the "bronze" insurance? Someone who can't afford to take a day off of work, is struggling to keep food on the table, can not afford such high copays.

The people who support this mess of a bill really just want to feel good about themselves. The truth is that tons of people will be left in horrible positions, and many will be in even worse positions than today. If you truly believe people should have access to health care, then demand socialized health care. Insurance has already failed our country, so mandating it is stupid. Try a solution that might work.”

“Military spending is more than half of the annual budget historically post WWII - this current time period is an outlier due to the economic crisis in which case we could partly blame such military spending. No other nation on Earth has spent as much on its military in the modern era and none of the historical ones have survived - I wouldn't take that bet.”

Indon replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 10:59:34

“Wildly successful is a ridiculously narrow-minded assertion.

Wildly successful at what?

Look at where we are.

We've destroyed the Earth. As hard as that is for me to write - for any semblance of a meaningful time-frame and definition - we have destroyed the Earth that humans came of age upon.

We made the mistake of viewing our fellow humans as competition and as the Earth's dominant animal that is simply untrue. If we had realized soon enough that we simply had to live together it might have been different. Sadly, it is too late.

Enjoy your success. I'm sure you'll not even know of the Earth that's been destroyed to provide it anyway.”

“Want a 50% tax cut? Throw out the entire military budget. Bring our entire military home - ALL OF IT. Sell off what is only used in wars of aggression and we could fund national defense for years.

I want a limited national defense and I want our government used to improve the lives of fellow Americans with a need and who are willing to ask for their countrymen's helping hand - this is the ONLY thing I'm willing to pay taxes for. The military-industrial complex needs to just butt out!”

Indon replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 08:28:19

“That'd only be about a 25%ish tax cut off of total federal taxes, if I recall. Certainly sizable, though. Paying off our debt, when we're not in a depression anymore and/or if we ever raise the taxes on the rich who are doing just peachy during the depression, would be another 15%ish.”

Otherwise, living away from modern contrivances such as paved roads in the hills on poorly maintained land (we rent) there is much that she simply isn't physically capable of doing. Certain aspects of driveway maintenance, falling and removing downed or dangerous trees, etc. There are just many things that I'm capable of performing that she isn't regardless of the that she is a very fit and strong woman.”
