“And too much of it is a bad thing. There are already forests that are showing damage because of too much of it. And if you don't think it's harmful, just lock yourself in an airtight container and see how long you live on your own CO2.”

“You know, if you continually make snide remarks about the president, he won't be able to accomplish nearly as much of what we all want him to do. People who constantly whine about the president just succeed in bringing down his polling numbers, which makes it that much more difficult to get the things done he wants to get done. I suggest instead of talking in terms of his "selling us out" (what did he get for that anyway?), you might remember what he HAS done. There's a list of about 90 things he's done so far, and he hasn't even been in office a year. If his approval ratings were at 70% or 80%, do you think he'd be able to get anything done that he promised? How about if his approval ratings were only 40%? Would that make it easier for him to get things done? This president saved us from another Great Depression. That in itself is a fantastic accomplishment and something we should remember. Give him a chance and support him, and I think we will all be surprised and thrilled at what he can accomplish in the future for the benefit of all Americans.”

“Unfortunately, with the way the filibuster works, that's pretty much what Democrats have to do in order to get anything passed since right now they are subject to the tyranny of the minority owing to our screwed up Senate. They Constitution says a bill should be able to pass with 51% or 51 votes. There's no reason the filibuster should be invoked on every issue, but Republicans have abused it ridiculously lately. The Senate should get rid of that rule. It would only take a majority of Senators to do so. A shame they don't give us back the democracy we thought we had where the majority rules instead of the minority.”

“You remind me of why I'm so happy to no longer be a Republican. When I was active in Republican politics many years ago, they weren't so negative as they are now, but they still had that fear of "big government" (even though so many of them still wanted to be elected to some government position thus presumably contributing to the problem). I'll take progressives any day over hypocritical righties who claim to want less government yet want the government in a woman's private business determining for her what she should do with her body, who claim to love America but hate most Americans (there are more on the left these days than the right by far), and who refuse to see that our country has some problems that need actual solutions, not just lip service, stonewalling, and obstructionism. I don't belong to any party, but from this outsider's perspective, I can tell you that in general, just for niceness, caring, and flat-out better ideas, I'll take a Democrat over a Republican any day. Seems to me the Republican position on just about everything is all about glorifying money, greed, and selfishness. So if all this makes me a source of entertainment for you, so be it. Unfortunately, you are not the same for me.”

“Um, we elect representatives to make those kinds of decisions. We have a representative democracy, remember? But if we did all vote, it would pass, undoubtedly. It's a shame our representatives don't care so much about what the people want and let money and the influence it buys determine how they will vote instead of common decency and compassion for those who voted for them.”

“Israelis do. And it hasn't hurt their economy a bit. They have the richest country in the Middle East. There really is something good in being able at any moment to see a doctor if you ever need one and to get your medical problems tended to in a timely manner without it bankrupting anyone. Something REALLY good about such a system. Would that America was as caring as all the other developed nations. But no. We have to bend to the wills of the corporations instead, who couldn't care less about anything but their own bottom lines. Works for them. For us? Not so much...”

“Something called the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs puts 2008 U.S. foreign aid to Israel at 2.5 Billion dollars, lower than I originally thought, but the figure seems fairly accurate. Other countries give, too. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I'm not sure we should start patting Israel on the back for paying for health care for their citizens if they are using foreign aid to do it.”

“Research would involve reading. Maybe even writing. And we've all seen that she has done neither. She didn't even write her own book. She couldn't even name a major Supreme Court decision that affected her own state dramatically, involving the Exxon-Valdez oil spill. She couldn't name a newspaper or magazine she had read before running for VP. She was pretty much unteachable according to people in the McCain campaign. How do you suppose she got all this expertise on climate change? Seems obvious to me she doesn't know, doesn't care, and is only in all this for the money and the fame. Talk about a con game.”

“And the right wing media has a whole brainwashing thing going by always referring to the "liberal media" and "liberal media bias" as if that were what is happening. The media is all owned by corporations these days, and they tend to be conservative, wishing as they do to maintain the status quo. So they get ignorant people all worked up about the "liberal media" while meanwhile controlling most of it, especially talk radio, and making it conservatively biased. Something like 95% of talk radio is conservative in spite of the fact that way less than half of the people lean in that direction. I hope everyone got to see Coundown last night. It was quite illuminating. There are so many conservative commentators all screaming that conservatives have no voice in the media. Yeah right. The corporations have their agendas and a lot of people go along like sheep. Fortunately, not everyone. Not yet.”

“Fortunately, there are a number of innovators in the private sector who are working on the problem anyway in spite of the opinions of the ignorant. They are inventing things like electric cars and batteries for them that go longer and longer plus various forms of alternative renewable energy, ways of reusing and recycling various materials, etc. What I don't get is why so-called conservatives are against conserving the environment. The only thing they want to conserve, seems to me, is the status quo. I prefer progress myself.
And btw, it was cap and trade that fixed the problem of acid rain. Does anyone hear about acid rain anymore? No, because a way was found to encourage everyone not to spew sulfur dioxide into the air. Did it cost anything? Probably, but I never noticed. And I'm happy that the lakes are back and stocked with fish. Why wouldn't people want this for other big problems? It does work.”
