Braving Black Friday: Risking Life And Limb For A Deal?

Braving Black Friday: Risking Life And Limb For A Deal?

Commented Nov 27, 2009 at 16:00:36 in Living

“I have never been part of the frenze shopping for a deal either. At times in my life of poverty when I needed items such as clothes and did not have the funds, I always found what I needed at shops known as fretex which recycle clothing and other items at perhaps 1% of the original costs. So I well know it is possible to dress warmly and clean with only survival monies. Perhaps that 1% of the original cost is actually what the workers were paid when they produced the products.

The rush for a deal is very much of a social tragedy where the items so lusted after are most often now produced in third world countries where the survival income is 200 dollars a year and items produced in sweat shops with children working 12 hours daily for a dollar.
The ethical and moral borders of humans inhumanity to humans and vast thoughtlessness breaks new borders in the 21century.

And when the customers walk out with their so sought after deal, they go home feeling they really were economicly clever and smart and not realizing just what system they each are helping perpetuate.

Though it is individual choice and each must live with themselves if not today then eventually.”

“Dear Norge,

I so love your thoughtful comment!

I wonder about those who leave their families on Thanksgiving to go get in line at the local Wal-Mart for the shopping extravaganza. Some people started lining up on Tuesday. Isn't this missing the point of giving?

Just shows how far we've strayed. Thanks for your voice of reason at a time when those voices are drowned out by the sounds of "Welcome K-Mart shoppers......."

Best,

There are no gods or devils on battlefields and there never has been. There are only very very sick human beings who have deliberatly been formed that way for the benifit of certain special interests. It is the way it has been during all of human history.

You are correct, I do not listen much anymore to the absurdity of the human condition on earth. To a human society which spends over 1 trillion dollars per year each year for death and distruction.”

I do not see the church as the problem, I see those beating the pulpit for revenge, those who have not really read their good book with a bit more understanding than the inquisitors as the real problem. Incidently, 9/11 was also about revenge from the other side which stimulated the response.

“SonofLiberty1,

And whatever happened to that "Ex.order" he signed? Is it in the national ark.?

Incidently, the guy who operated Vietnam was a guy named McMacnemara. And there was a coolition of the will there also which included Australia, South Korea (the Rocks) as they were then known and others catagorized as "Advisers".

McMcnamera later wrote his horrible grief for what he was responsible for in a book titled "The Fog of War". And apologized for how tragicly wrong he had been and never did stand trial for war crimes.”

It is not surprising that America went to war as after 9/11 the vast majority were in what seemed at the time to be a form of "Collective Psychosis" simular to what the mind set was at the time of the hostage crisis with Iran.

It is some times also refered to as caught in "Double Morality" which caused a type of catatonic behavior.

“Life styles which are "Chosen" helps people avoid the devestation of depressions. And those who are not able to choose where and how to live due to economic factors can improve their daily enviorments and put more joy into their lives by focusing on activities which they enjoy and give them energy and reduce those activities which drain energy from them.

Those with lives where few dreams have been realized and have reached the borders of hopelessness
are in need of drastic life style changes. At times the best one can do for oneself is simply, walk away and start new and more than likely the awful clouds of depression will dissapate to rains and a new and brighter day will arrive.”

“When the pleasure center of the brain becomes so conditioned to certain stimuli, the changing of the behavior must first begin with the re-conditioning of the pleasure center which is more socially exceptable and less harmful to those so affected.

That can only come about with the full exceptance of the affected person. All humans are addicted to one or other substances or activity, some more harmfull than others and those addictions varie in intensity for everyone.”

“Yes, and that is called an addiction. A chemical rush that some people get from food, others from drugs or alcohol, or from playing video games or.. whatever gets your chemicals going. It isn't an excuse.
It is an explanation, but most people have less tolerance for drug addicts or alcoholics than they do for food addicts. Yes, you can stop drinking but you cannot stop eating food, the but same principles apply. Someone who craves sugars to get them out of their slump, gives up sugars and eats only meats, eggs, veggies, etc.
No matter what the addiction, you'll find that ex addicts have the least amount of sympathy for currant addicts.
I have much more sympathy for people who cannot afford the food they need than those who choose to eat Doritos over chicken. Of course that is assuming that people know how to cook, and we are in the second generation of those who do not. Its also assuming people have the time to cook the foods they can afford - like a whole chicken can take an hour or more to cook and a working family with kids may find that difficult with their time constrictions.”

The vastness, and enormity of the cosmos deserves nothing less than reverence. And the multverse possibilities fills the unknowns and answers the larger number of my own personal questions. I studied black holes during the 70's when they were just a humor topic of sceptics.

It seems to be simply foolish of any to deny with their absolutes the non-existance of what ever
they may find unexceptable to their own views.

Collision: Is Religion Absurd or Good for the World?

Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 02:42:44 in Living

“I prefer to think there is not just one universe but muliuniverses wherein all is posssible. The expanding cosmos continually creating more universes. Though it is thought by some that the expantion will eventually conclude in a great ripe and anti-matter will then dominate and all will return to cinder. Perhaps though not my belief.

The universes are all teaming with life and it is that force in the cosmos which gives the cosmos a reason for being. And that life force is eternal extending from the vastness of the micro bacterial to the infinate..

The possibilities in such a cosmos views the athiest as a child, who is unaware of the neighbors' house.”

Shiroe replied on Oct 21, 2009 at 03:02:49

“I agree with this fully. All those stories about other places such as Elysium, Heaven, Nifelheim, etc, were, I believe, about other dimensions. Many legends speak of other worlds separated from this one by a "veil," or some sort of pathway. I believe this is an excellent explanation for both "supernatural" beings and places. To people without the knowledge of science we have today, extra-dimensional beings and places would certainly seem supernatural. Heck, they'd seem supernatural even with today's science!”

“As for the acupuncture, it might be prudent to consult those cultures who have used it for several thousand years.
As for scientific proof, until the electromagnetic fields of the earth were discovered, it was considered ridiculous to even consider that birds could travel from continent to continent.

Some years ago the leading knowledge of the earth was that it was flat and any who questioned it were burned at the stake in some places.”

Etrusci replied on Oct 18, 2009 at 16:32:30

“Magnetism was observed well before Earth's magnetic field was understood. It was evidence that pre-dates the theory, rather than the other way around.

Eratosthenes scientifically predicted the circumference of the earth in around 200 BCE, with a relatively high level of accuracy. It was disregarded for hundreds of years, not because of science, but because there was no respect for science. The term had hardly been defined.”

cable1977 replied on Oct 18, 2009 at 16:27:05

“Yes, and those theories that you listed, were tested as were the explanations for them.

The flat earth idea, as well as heliocentric theory, were not developed using the scientific process. Rather, they are based on individual observations made, but not tested. The people who were burned at the state were the ones using scientific processes to counter the prevailing religious ideas of the age. Those religious ideas were achieved not by rigorous study, but rather by just assuming they were correct as they were the religious dogma of the day.

Acupuncture is being studied and the data is not exactly promising:

http://nccam.nih.gov/health/acupuncture/acupuncture-for-pain.htm#evidence

The results are certainly not what one would call promising. The conclusions seem to range from "no effect" to "maybe if we did more studies", but certainly very little positive data showing true efficacy of the treatment.

The problem with some alternative medicine is not that no evidence is being produced, its that the studies are negative. If you are not open to your hypothesis being wrong and open to the fact that treatments like homeopathy do not work, then you are no different than the religious zealots who believed the sun circled the earth, and burned anyone who could show otherwise.”

Perhaps the human society has sanitized the human body of certain bacterias which previously had been part of the defense system for such problems.
Perhaps if we can find exactly the bacteria which did such protective work for humans, then many of those allergies can again become unknown.”
