“Denying women abortion denies them equal citizenship. Period. That said, I have had an abortion and find the black/white nature of the health care bills frightening. When I had an abortion, I was recovering from six months of hepatitis and was so weak I could not walk around the block. Was pregnancy a threat to my life? I don't know, but I wasn't going to wait to find out. Many women suffer from conditions that may be aggravated by pregnancy: they may not be life threatening at the outset, but may be seriously detrimental to health and/or life threatening later in the pregnancy when it is harder to decide to abort. I know I could not and would not have made that decision at five months. These bills allow women's health to be seriously compromised and, if implemented, certainly will result in the death of some women. This is an outrage, one I have not heard discussed anywhere.”

“I'm pro-choice, but no one is "denying" women anything. The bill just says the taxpayers aren't paying for it. And most of us agree with that.”

“Actually, it seems to be putting a scarlet A on the foreheads of women who chose to have very active sex lives. This issue is deeper than abortion and if you spend enough time on the internet, where young men persistently refer to women as whores, you realise the old prostiture/madonna dichotomy still lives. A good number of men, it seems, have never acknowledged "sexual liberation ."”

“As a woman with a strongly male name (not Norm), I am unsurprised by James Chartrand's experience. When you walk through life with a man's name, the discrimination is obvious: I could have spent a career in an EEOC office. Women delude themselves in thinking they have achieved an equality that is at least as remote today as it was in the seventies and possibly more so. Women are routinely trivialized, but are blissfully unaware of it. Some of this we have done to ourselves with the help of Hollywood; we are more sexualized than ever. Some of it would exist anyway. I have known for many years that if I ever got it together to write a novel, for sure I would not let anyone know I was a woman. I have surprised too many on blogs, where posters, on discovering I was female, gave me the ultimate compliment: You write like a man.”

“I agree that the President has more information than we do; however, two of the last five wars, Vietnam and Iraq were fraudulent wars, based on lies to the American public. If the public does not pay keen attention, we will have more such wars. The war in Afghanistan was started as restribution to Al Quaeda, which is said to be in Pakistan, a true nuclear danger spot. If they are not currently in Afghanistan, we have no mission there.”

“I don't agree on a draft! What we need is elected officials that are truly transparent that are held accountable for their illegal actions, officials that will uphold the constitution and do the will of the people. What we have is a President/ government that sold us out to big business and wall street thugs officials that don't care how many people are killed in this war as long as their pockets are lined.”

While Senators Denounce Medicaid, The Uninsured Turn To Charity
Commented Nov 22, 2009 at 16:14:06 in Politics
“Senator Alexander is unfortunately right about Medicaid, which is one reason why I do not support thehealth care bills, but support single payer. The Senate bill would raise the Medicaid guidelines to 150% of poverty level. Currently, to receive Medicaid, one can not have more than $4K in the bank. Outside of urban areas and probably inside of many, doctors simply don't take Medicaid because the reimbursement rates are too low. Raising the Medicaid cut-off is a cruel joke to those who need care the most and will continue to be unable to see a physician. I know those who received early Medicare because of disability and the Medicare is supplemented by Medicaid. They pay the 20% Medicaid should pay out of pocket; no small feat when the pocket only has $4K in it.”

What Was Newsweek Thinking? (updated)

“I disagree with Sarah Palin on every level and would have been perfectly delighted to be able to avoid her on the tube this week. I don't believe she wrote "her" book and have no interest in either reading her or talking about it, but I did make a point of watching one interview before I swore off ABC for the duration. You know what, she presented well, which makes her ever so much more dangerous than if she presented poorly. Jon Meacham is an historian and his protests are disingenuous. The Newsweek cover was not only in poor taste and sexist; it gave Palin an opportunity to blast women's treatment she otherwise would not have had. Women like me were forced to acknowledge she had a point. I could have lived without that, so Jon, thanks for nothing.”
hp blogger Taylor Marsh replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 17:41:01
“Hi Norm, thanks for commenting. Jon Meacham and Newsweek actually fell for the trap, which only elevates Palin, as you rightly note, also giving her a point of bonding with voters that normally wouldn't give her the time of day. Like yourself. Points well made.
To add, the more hate and misogyny shoved Palin's way, the more she benefits.”
