“Happily, I fell asleep for the speech. Peter, the Equal Rights Amendment for women has never been passed. There are many people in this country not enjoying the civil rights they deserve, not just gays and lesbians. I sympathize, but everyone needs to fight for everyone in order to succeed.”

I am speaking of the indignities I experience as a gay man in this country. I cannot speak for women, though, yes, it is appalling that, in general, for instance, women don't get paid the same salary as men for doing the same job.
I am affected by the card of oppressive elements my country has dealt me. It is well within my right to fight for my civil rights, and to express my outrage as a result of my government-sanctioned relegation to second-class citizenship.

That is never going to happen in this society. The haters and the ignorant, who have been conditioned to view homosexuals as a subspecies threat are certainly not going to help me obtain my civil equality.
The last time I felt a true sense of unity with my fellow citizens was after 9/11. It was a traumatic, unprecedented time for us all. It was a special time, in an odd way, because much time had passed since the last time I truly experienced this sense of unity.
We're not all in this together. That's just not reality. It's a sad reality but it's reality nonetheless.”

“The reaction to Lambert's performance was not entirely homophobia; reading the blogs this morning even gay fans were put off. I read last summer of some music industry insiders who said Adam would do well - if he didn't become a caricature. Last night he showed he was well on the way to becoming just that. Unfortunately, he dragged the gay community along for his ride, which is selfish and irresponsible. Much of middle America supports gay rights, but one shouldn't take that support to mean it wants to watch what homosexuals do in the privacy of their clubs or bedrooms. I was afraid of reactions like yours. The performance will hurt Lambert, who has an exquisitely beautiful voice (usually), as a singer's bread and butter is concerts and he significantly whittled his concert attendance. As for the women performers.....what can I say?”

“I ain't panicked in the least; however, having participated in demonstrations since the sixties, the most recent being one in Austen, TX, opposing the Iraq war, I do know that all the cameras around are not shooting for "film at 11."
