Commented Dec 16, 2009 at 14:02:23 in Politics

“And republicans wonder why polling is showing that even if the dems numbers slip, the republican numbers don't improve?

Where are the screams of lack of patriotism - you know that if the dems held up the dod funding for the troops that every republican would be screaming that they don't love America or that the dems hate our troops.

Coburn is just shamelessly pathetic. What really irks me is that by all appearances, governance for the republicans is just a political game, it's not to provide good legislature for the country, or dig us out of the hole we're in, it's a just a political game.”

“Why is it that when the republicans start whining about the lack of bipartisianship, the threats of reconcilliation, and the cost of HRC - why there isn't more made off the fact they they used reconcilliation to pass the bush tax cuts for an astounding 1.3 trillion that was added directly to the deficit?

Couldn't hrc be passed in two separate bills - one for the regulations, etc., passed under normal rules, and the second for the medicare buy in or public option done under reconciliation?”

“Cut a deal - with strings attached. We'll cut a deal with you, and you will no longer caucus with the dems and we'll strip you of your chairmanship positions. There's no reason to still pander to him as if he was a democrat when he clearly isn't.

Before giving up completely, even with stripping the public option and/or medicare buy in, it's a pretty strong bill. Just make sure the antitrust is no longer there and the caps are removed. There's still a win here - it's just taking smaller steps. Something is better than nothing and this opens the door to future reforms. We do have to do something about the fillibuster situation - it just hamstrings government.”

“You're right Joseph - we need to get heavily behind Bill White. He's been an effective mayor, but he just isn't very charismatic, and I think much of the attention will go to the gop smackdown. I hope that they go crazy enough to make either one of the unappealing to the majority. I just want to see TX removed from the crazy list - Perry hasn't done squat except embarrass the state. The education board - the ones editing the content of textbooks for the country - is made up of religious wingnuts. That's not good for TX or for the country. I'd like to see TX enter the current century and become more progressive and proactive. The state could flourish under the right leadership.”

“TX in general has gotten a bad rap lately because of the ridiculously stupid comments made by our mouth breathing neanderthal of a governor. I've laughed at the criticisms, but people need to realize that we're not all spitting tobacco juice and playing cowboy. I live in Houston and the people that I have contact with are offended by the image Rick Perry projects for this state - it's not accurate, but it makes good theater for his insanity.

I'm proud of my city - I received numerous vitriolic homophobic mailings in the last couple of weeks. It was shameful. I voted for Parker in the general and those mailing planted me even more firmly in her camp. Sexual orientation has no bearing on one's competence. She was the best person for the job - the rest is just nonsense. I hope this election helps turn the tide on the outside appearance of the state of TX, we are actually quite civilized here, but not unlike anywhere else, we have more than our share of nutcases, unfortunately for us, the biggest nutcase happens to be governor.

Parker will be a very competent mayor, she has a proven track record.”

“"Obviously we need to run the government, but do you suppose the government could be a little bit like families and be just a little bit prudent in how much it spends?" said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

This is really a foolish argument - you can't think of the governments budget like a family budget - it's not a valid comparison. It scares me to think that someone working on crafting and voting on the budget would have such a simplistic and wrongheaded view. It's not a valid comparison. But dumbing it down - regardless of accuracy is the common gop meme these days. If it fits on a bumpersticker it works.”

“That sounds mild compared to the homophobic "vote for traditional marriage" mailer I received yesterday recommending Gene Locke for mayor. I was just speechless at how ridiculous and offensive it was.

On the back side they listed the candidates - and their recommendations for mayor, district a and at-large two - there are gays/lesbians in each of the run off races - and there's an asterisk by the names of the gays and lesbians that refers to a footnote - "Homosexual lifestyle". Freaking astericks marking the lesbians!

The front has rambling screed referencing a bible verse - and this gem..."We have a choice on December 12th. We can either stand up and fight for the traditional family and marriage (one man one woman) or allow the radical homosexual activists (with their out of state money) elect a lesbian for mayor." "Radical homosexual actists"!!!!!

I thought the last paragraph was hilarious - "I have received dozens of pieces of hate mail and threats on my life for taking a stand."

I thought...only dozens?”

Harry Reid's Slavery Remark 'Ignorant,' Says Michael Steele

Commented Dec 08, 2009 at 15:21:34 in Politics

“Are you as offended by Cornyns comments calling health care reform "gulag" style medicine. Or are you as offended when "teabaggers" and republican senators call our President a communist/socialist/facist? I'm just wondering if your outrage is authentic or if it's selective like mr. steeles.

I personally believe mr. steeles outrage is phony. A lot worse has been said by those on the right. Reid was making a historical analogy about how republicans have consistently been on the wrong side of the issues. It's not Reids fault if the opposition party has the mental maturity of 7 year olds.”

BRaines replied on Dec 08, 2009 at 15:41:25

“Full disclosure, I consider myself to be a moderate republican, and have worked for both parties in the past.

I was absolutely offended by many of the comments made at the tea-party protests, and believe that many of them served in no way to raise the nature of the debate. However this comment from Senator Reid is also offensive and was made (in my opinion) not out of any true belief in his analogy but was intended to force a republican response. To blindly suggest that all conservative policies are fueled by hate and ignorance is to be either blissfully ignorant of history, or overwhelmingly disingenuous.

To defend a statement likening a somewhat legitimate concern over the expansion of the federal government to supporting the preservation of slavery is also offensive. Liberalism does not inherently consitute moralistic standings, just as conservatives cannot claim an absolute moral highground.

To make sweeping comments about the intelligence and maturity of those who disagree with you provides absolutely no benefit to the debate, in fact it only serves to undermine your own viewpoints legitimacy.”
