“This shouldn't be about "are you a knee-jerk Obama supporter" or " are you a knee-jerk Obama critic." The facts, if you read the Washington Post article and the Obama administration's response to lobbyists: industry interests will be able to be legally represented by company executives, simply forcing reps even more competent than lobbyists to take time out of their busy schedules, but achieving the same result, and lobbyists can stop lobbying and stay on the boards, simply creating two kinds of lobbyists, who will no doubt have lunch to align their positions and strategies.

It's not that Obama is doing wrong things. It's that why get so excited about a change that has no promise of producing different results? Yes, the symbolism is good, very good. We can celebrate that.”

Why, even Mr. Banks, Mary Poppins's employer, knew enough to recount that the protesters tossed the tea into the harbor, making it unsuitable for drinking, "even for Americans."”

“I have no idea what that's supposed to mean aside from you didn't like what I said. Do you think Friedman will advocate cutting Israeli aid to the bone in order to affect change? Because that is what it would take. If he was serious he would have spelled it out explicitly in this piece or said something to effect of "cut as much as it takes" to get their attention that we're serious this time. His long track record says he won't go nearly that far in his "radical new approach".
And what makes Friedman someone you'd listen to about anything, let alone the Middle East. He thought the invasion of Iraq was a great opportunity to stabilize the region.”

“Sorry, but incorrect. A key element of terrorism, as defined by the FBI and U.S. law, is intention to influence policy. I agree that your list, with the exception of Columbine, does not represent terrorism, but Columbine did, and, from what I have read, this case is grey. It seems more like mass murder, but the perpetrator may have had some political goals (it seems his motives are so varied as to make it a pointless discussion). The point is, this does not tell us anything about the media or anti-muslim bias.”

“... and more specifically on enforcement, the way these things work (of course) is that suppliers don't get to do business with the firm unless they agree to these things. There may be some random audits, but not everything is auditable (like rape). However, publicizing the policy informs employees of their rights, and violations of the policy can lead to termination of the contract, retroactively. It usually doesn't come to that; once the violation is noted, the supplier usually remedies and complies. But the threat of losing the business is the lever which induces suppliers to do the right thing from the start. No biggie. This is common sense and what is meant by enforcement.”

“The argument that this law would be unenforceable is ludicrous to anyone with any experience in the purchasing function of a large corporation. All kinds of requirements are put on contractors. In fact, a relatively new (last ten years or so) trend is "corporate social responsibility," a centerpiece of which is often a battery of guarantees suppliers have to make regarding how they treat their employees (wage rates, plant safety, age limits, etc.). This was Jon Stewart's point. As the one holding the pursestrings, it is precisely Congress's role to set the terms of contracts (as it does in the realm of discrimination). They have a responsibility to do so. And, as others have pointed out, all this legislation would do is give employees the option of adjudication; it wouldn't bar them from choosing arbitration.

I despair of the level of rationality and honesty coming from the right and libertarians. Opposing something like this is really unjustifiable. Any child could figure this out, but our brothers and sisters on the right seem to have worked themselves into mental contortions out of sheer hatred of the Left. It is sad.”

sak replied on Oct 20, 2009 at 05:36:15

“You are absolutely right. We set the rules. If the contractor breaks them, they do not get a new contract, their employee is subjected to criminal procedure, and the contractor is fined. Since when do we turn our backs on gang rape? And then we pretend that we are shocked at Abu Garab? These kinds of things do on in our own prisons on a daily basis and nothing is done to stop it.”

“I feel, though it is hard to prove, that among many health care reform opponents there is more racism than Obama admits, though not the explicit, vitriolic racism of the birthers. I think many Americans feel that the New Deal and Great Society, in targeting the poor, disproportionately benefit minorities, which fuels racial resentment. Who are the 47 million uninsured? Disproportionately minorities. Some whites' attitudes toward health care reform reflect the same mindset that disposes them against the "welfare state." Much rhetoric is consistent with this interpretation (losing "our" country, etc.). The U.S.'s unique history of racial heterogeneity and division is, I believe, a major reason why we alone among developed countries lack universal health care in the first place. Cultivating a sense of "we-ness" among the French is easier than among us "melting pot" Americans. The racism that may underlie opposition to any reform or public (or quasi-public) option is, if it exists, both more subtle and more pervasive than usually remarked. At least that's what my gut tells me.”

“McCain may be right that a public option may run private health care insurance out of the market. The real question is, so what? Google Frontline and view their special comparing health systems in major developed countries. What is the one common denominator? Health care insurance (not all insurance) is non-profit. Pretty much every other advanced county has made an ethical choice to remove the profit motive from the provision of health insurance (not healthcare, just the insurance side of it). This, along with many other differences, results in more affordable healthcare with no significant impact on quality. Anyone who tells you anything different is selling something or ignorant. There is no valid justification for denying the public option. When every other comparable country agrees, this is beyond opinion. It is fact.”

newsmctado replied on Aug 27, 2009 at 11:31:37

“Reposted:

Oppenents of a public option cite the coverage mandate and penalties as why all employers will drop private insurance and put all employees on the public plan. The argument goes like this: A coverage mandate calls for all employers to provide coverage for employees. Failure to do so results in a fine of $750 per employee. Private coverage costs an employer on average $1200-3000 a year. Therefore, employers will drop the private insurance plans in order to save money. $750 per employee is less than $1200-3000 per employee.

This logic is flawed in a simple but fundamentally important way. Currently, employers are not required to provide health insurance, yet many still do. They provide coverage as a benefit or perk. So currently employers have the option of paying $1200-3000 a year per employee for coverage, or paying $0 by simply not providing coverage. Oppenents of health care reform hinge their argument on the idea that employers will no longer offer private insurance as a perk/benefit.

Private insurance will still be offered as an employment benefit just like now. Employers that currently do not provide coverage will have the option of paying the penalty (still cheaper than coverage) or providing private insurance as a further perk. Additionally, subsidies will be put in place to offset the costs for small businesses having to now provide insurance or pay the penalty.

So where is the driving force for employers to drop private coverage?”
