Spoiler alert: What I know about economics could be characterized as diddly-squat. Based on that, in the crudest terms, it seems the reason the bailout isn't big enough is because it's not fixing what was broken. The whole thing started to crumble when people couldn't pay their subprime loans (the ones predatory lenders rammed down their throats, BTW - everyone is in denial about that one, for sure). The only thing that is being done about mortgages is a suggested, voluntary program of restructuring and modifying those loans banks deem eligible. As if. Nothing is being done to fix the banking system and we all know that's the problem, those derivitive thingies and default swappery-isms and malfeasant parchment waste baskets. If however people could pay down those bad loans and had disposable income of $200 or $300, say, at the end of the month, this economy would be stimulated nicely. Fixing, or trying to fix the banks first seems to be putting the cart before the horse.”
