Adopting A New Attitude

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 18:30:21 in Living

“From your text: "What makes any child special is the love developed in the act of caring for -- and being cared for by -- someone."
You lost me on that one. Sounds like it makes it all about you....as if "Because I chose to love and care for this child, they are special. If I had not chosen to care, they would not be special." IMHO, what makes a child special is the fact that they EXIST, that there never has been nor ever will be another like them. EVER. Does this mean that only children who get "picked" and cared for are special? Does this mean that children whom no one cares about are somehow not special?
I have faith in you. Surely this was a mis-wording on your part and, hopefully, not actually how you feel.”

dessertsfirst replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 20:40:39

“OTC: thank you for that clarification. Yes, each child is special. Children grow into adults. What makes us, as adults not special, is by our acting otherwise. Because special people treat others special too.”

Pyrrhic Victoria: Why Men Are Becoming More Like Women

“Men and women have always had power, just different types of it. Men have traditionally had the monetary and political power, while women, (a la Betty Draper,) have had the power of emotions and whether or not to give/withhold affection. As women are finally being allowed into the arena of the money and policy making, men are learning that they don't have to put up with the manipulative power plays of the women, in fact, that they can play that card, too. In the case of the metrosexual men, they can play it as well as their mothers did. It is not that women cannot play "hard ball, they've just been relegated to softball all these years by men who did not want to pitch to their own sisters. All women are asking is to be allowed to have biceps without being called lesbian, to have guts and nerve without being called a man-basher, to have an effing brain without being called b*tch. Women still have hearts, and the all valuable "indoor plumbing," all they want is to be allowed to paly the game their brothers do without being told they "throw like a guurl!"”

“The vast majority of men also have no money. It may be that most of the people with the most money are men, but the other 99% of us don't have any more opportunity than our sisters do. You're not helping anyone if you think that every man on Earth shares the blame for what the a$$holes at the top of the pile have done.”

“Stupak is anti-female. The reaction to it is appropriate and NOT anti-male. Just because women want to run their own lives instead of being dictated to does not signal anti-male sentiments. It signals the end of being under thumbs, that's all. Men are still loved and valued, they just don't get to dictate the complete and total rules any longer. Really. Guys are not losing, they are just being taught where the bar really lies and exactly what a level playing field looks like. After all, their view of these things has been distorted for millenia.”

Since When Did 40 Become Old?

Commented Nov 18, 2009 at 14:25:40 in Entertainment

“When you say that Nora "won" the attention of a younger man, well, that's slipping into skinny jeans right there. Why not say she "attracted" or, better yet, "aroused" the attention?
BTW, Ma'am was a perfectly respectable and courteous thing to call a woman who is obviously no longer a "Miss," until boomer women decided it made them feel old. This is why we've gone back to being "chicks."
Exactly what are people supposed to call a woman older than 20? I'm not being snarky- I want to know.”

texastrixie replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 11:05:29

“Sorry, I understand your question. Over 40, under 40, when you speak to a woman whose name you do not know, you say, "Miz," (Ms.) which is alway age appropriate, and covers you, regardless of marital status (that's why we came up with it).”

In Defense of Betty Draper

In Defense of Betty Draper

Commented Nov 18, 2009 at 14:13:20 in Entertainment

“Mr. Miller,
Thanks for your heartfelt and spot-on take of Betty Draper and especially for identifying the real reason behind the outpouring of emotion by so many viewers who are simultaneously intrigued and ticked off by her character. My mother is written all over this character, too. Growing up, I was often confounded by what I perceived as the pure manipulation of people by my mother, who was in turn amazed that her modern daughters refused to "dress like ladies" and furthermore, had "no idea the nuances of how to use one's womanhood to one's advantage." (Quote!) She was a master at using the only power allowed her. It truly was a different world then.
And as for us kids going (OUTSIDE, of all places!) to play until dark or dinner, whichever came first, and going out on Halloween without at least two adults within arms length, those times constitute my favorite childhood memories, too. You really got it right about the fact that adults, and children, had lives of their own in that era.
Thanks for the best Betty Draper commentary I've seen so far.”

BTW, stop with this notion of hacking off breasts with machetes. You're going to give the insurance industry ideas!! (I can't believe a woman would talk like that about her own body to begin with.)”

“I understand that there needs to be equality in pay and I believe that the majority of men would agree with that. Especially since most women are with men, the men would like their women to bring home more money. That doesn't address the issue of the lack of manners, foul language and lack of attention to personal appearance. There is also an issue with, as the other person commented on, the aggressiveness and combativeness, which has also been more of a male trait in the past and yet more topics to make an article on why women are acting like men.”
