“Even the alternative energy crowd suffers from the legacy of top down thinking. Centralized power plants of any kind are a throw back to a time when technology was crude and education was lacking. The amount of money these projects take to launch and maintain would be better spent on an "electro grid" idea like Al Gore spoke about a few times. Energizing as many homes and buildings as possible first right where they are first would reduce the need for centralized power plants, transmission lines with their inherent energy losses and habitat destruction.
The green energy movement is being high jacked by a bunch of greedy venture capitalist determined to make all the same mistakes we've been making since the dawn of the industrial revolution. all this capital needs to flow into small, local banks for local projects first. It will cost a tenth as much as these giant projects and then we could evaluate what larger projects we still need.”

George Bush SR. hit on similar themes. “This is a good idea but you still need to check what local bank you want to use. I've always used my local bank for 18 years, but since this whole economic melt down occurred they've become as bad a predator as the big ones. Despite having put over 2 million dollars through their system in the past 3 years, buying two houses and having paid off multiple loans they've restricted lending only to the wealthy of our community who don't need the money. They're cramming checks through that are written weeks apart from each other to control our cash flow during this period and collecting huge amounts of over draft and bounced check fees as a result. They delay our deposits so checks will bounce and do just about everything else I've been reading about the big banks doing. We're beginning to migrate our money out of there to a credit union after they turned us down for a consolidation loan yesterday after waiting two months for a decision. They won't even help us with invoice financing on guaranteed orders we have in hand. They've become horrible people, so be careful who you do business with. Ask around and read everything they give you when you're signing up. Even hire a lawyer if you can afford one. don't trust any banker.”

“The Homeland Security Agency itself is a grand example of closing the barn door after the cow got away. It was the Bush administration's way of looking like it was doing something and covering up the fact threat they let 911 happen. We already had a homeland security agency. It was called the FBI and FEMA to deal with after action issues with far less cost and fanfare they could be doing a better job had we not allowed Bush to cover is back side and make himself look like a hero when in fact he is responsible for the biggest intelligence failure in history called 9/11. Homeland security was one of the biggest, most wasteful expansions of government we ever had and it will never live up to it's promise. We can do more with our existing agencies and waste a lot less money doing it too.”

“Phil Graham, the master of disaster, is the last person anyone should be listening to right now. Putting this law back into effect with some modern tweeking is what should have happened months ago even before Obama came into office.
Right now, as things are set up, Wall Street and the mega-banks have no incentive to trade and do business with the middle class. There's more fake money to be made trading between themselves on make believe trades of paper and risky bets at the roulette table. Why make 100,000 dollar loans at 6% that pay off in 20 years when you can make 100 million dollar loans that pay off in days rather than years? Those at the top of this stinking pile don't create wealth anymore, they have reduced life to a spread sheet and they've removed themselves from the concept of public good and real wealth creation and venture capital. We can't grow our country if a 90% of the money is tied up in a gambling parlor.”

Senate Democrats Tell White House: Drop Cap And Trade Climate Change Bill

Commented Dec 27, 2009 at 15:33:53 in Green

“At a meeting about health care last month, moderates pushed to table climate legislation in favor of a jobs bill that would be an easier sell during the 2010 elections, according to Senate Democratic aides.

This statement is what's wrong with the conventional thinkers in power today. A good climate change bill is a good jobs bill and they needn't be separate or opposed to each other. This is a false choice. However, cap and trade is a dog that won't hunt. A good start on climate legislation would be to eliminate the corporate welfare in the present fossil fuel economy. We still give away leases on public land to oil and coal companies for a song and in some cases we even use tax payer dollars to build roads into wilderness for them to get their dirty job done. The oil depletion allowance and subsidies like it still exist. Stop subsidizing nuclear power development and research and funneling money into industries that work against the future. Corporate welfare is the problem. Wars are just another form of it. What do they cost? Imagine funneling the hundreds of billions we've wasted in Iraq and Afghanistan into clean technology.
There are so many other clean technologies that we already have and extraordinary improvements on the drawing board that with a just a little venture capital from Wall Street could deliver us into full employment and a clean economy in under five years but politicians and investors are gutless wonders without imagination.”

winterkills replied on Dec 27, 2009 at 22:37:20

“You are absolutely right about corporate welfare for the fossil fuel companies, and about the ineffectiveness of a cap & trade approach to reducing CO2 emissions. Personally, I believe in imposing absolute caps (no trading) and a tax on carbon (offset by a reduction in tax on low carbon alternatives). This would encourage wealthy fossil fuel companies to invest in renewable energy projects, such as Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Geothermal_System

and to wind-down oil and coal production.

The MIT report mentioned in the wiki page on EGS estimates that the U.S. has a geothermal resource equivalent to "roughly 140,000 times the total U.S. annual primary energy use in 2005", and that 100 gigawatts of electricity could be generated each year by a modest investment of $1 billion over 15 years. This tells us that we don't need coal for electricity generation, and we can hugely reduce our oil consumption too.”

And that is a false claim. Odd how so-called 'scientists' are so careful in mathematically parsing climate data to support their pre-conclusions, but not one of them, neither scientists, economists or politicians, has been able to show the slightest correlation or cause-and-effect between being forced to join 'One World' and give away our last remaining life savings, on a casino tax incentive ponzi scheme to 'green' our way out of the incredible deficit hole the Fed government and Wall Street has drilled. They refuse to do the economic numbers! "Oh, don't worry, our Green tithe-tax Church of Carbon will save US! Al Gore is of course running around, with some success, matching up the green tech and venture capital, but this makes him a target for the right propaganda machine as their cartoon version of a green philisophy involves living in a cave eating moss.
The Greenies need to get the good information out into the zeitgeist, and I am guessing we will need a Carl Sagan type who can deliver it. Gore is doing a very good job at this, but he is autofiltered by his history versus the right wingnuts. IMHO We either overcome the lies hindering his work or find another messenger. I love the guy but this is a pivotal moment where major change COULD happen.”

McConnell Hints That GOP Will Campaign On Repealing Health Care Reform

Commented Dec 27, 2009 at 13:19:48 in Politics

“The republican party manipulates the data to say what they want it to say because they are dillusional about how they are now perceived in the country.
Many people, including myself are opposed to "THIS" health care bill, not health care reform generally and although they keep repeating that this is a "government take over of health care" the majority of people know this is not what's on the table even though we've been asking for it and the president campaigned on it. Indeed, most of us want more government involvement because we can see that private industry and Wall Street can't be trusted to do the job properly. The Wall Street 19th century capitalist model can't work in health care. It is the antithesis of what health care requires. Health care is, by nature, a very risky business.
Republicans actually like the corporate welfare approach that came out of this because they win either way. If it passes all their buddies in the health insurance industry do much better and all the members of congress who own stock in health care insurance companies stocks go up in value. They can demagogue the bill too, as government take over legislation and play to their base who still cling to the failed dogma of Government can't do anything right. The sad part is the democrats handed them this gift on a silver platter. Frankly I think they're all in on this charade together.”
