America Without a Middle Class

“You have it right. The corporate and other powerful interests have very smartly used
the republican party and wedge issues to divide the middle class electorate and I must
say it has worked wonderfully for them. On top of this, the middle class has largely rested on their laurels for the last 30 years without realizing or taking responsibility for the fact that rights and the
progress made have to be continually defended. And another poster mentioned people watching "Dancing with the stars" and munching Cheetos" and yes, that kind of mindless apathy is definitely a real problem that has been carefully cultivated by the same powerful interests. Is it any coincidence that there's nothing on TV outside of PBS (which, thank God, we still have) that requires a thinking audience?
Also, before some smart-mouth under-40 person blames the Boomers for this mess, let me say
that it really took off with the Reagan administrations and I totally doubt the boomers voted for Reagan en mass. He got in with the votes of our parents and the generation immediately after us.”

“Really well said...
Yes the real attack upon the Middle Class started under Reagan...i t's been 28 years of erosion and betrayal and abandonment all by design and half of the Middle Class supported it, the Republican base especially voting against their own best interest over and over and they'll still do it, look a Palin they actually think she's some kind of leader, and would even vote for her..!”

“This should be re-printed in every major newspaper and news website in the country.
How can we make that happen?
The author has distilled the facts in such a way that makes it crystal clear how the country has
been lied to and manipulated and the results of being taken in by it. We can only make headway
towards righting the ship if we all have a common understanding of exactly what has happened
over the last 30 years (not the last 2 years!) and what needs to happen to fix things. Maybe we
need to earnestly look for a current day Eisenhower. But even Eisenhower could not fix things
if the country as a whole was not behind him. Let's pray that it doesn't require another WWII to
put all of us in that state of mind ......... (global warming, anyone?)”

“If you haven't watched TV in ten years, then you actually have no idea what the "state of television fare in general" today even is. Sure there's lots of crap on. There always is, always has been, always will be. Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap."
But there's also lot's of great stuff on: MAD MEN, LOST, DOCTOR WHO, THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, TORCHWOOD, PBS mini-series like LITTLE DORITT.
If you are ten years behind the times, you're not an informed snarker.”

This Film is an Idiot's Version of Naomi Klein's Masterpiece
Commented Sep 06, 2009 at 22:03:28 in World
“What a shame!!! Hopefully, some far more competent and passionate filmmaker will make another film. People are shockingly ignorant of what Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine contains. The power that corporate interests have have gained over the last several decades is simply horrific - everthing from what you describe, ot the pharmaseutical and insurance interests that control our healthcare (or lack of it!) to the corporate farming interests that knowingly poison and polute our food chain and keep livestock in unthikable conditions, to the military industrial interests that Eisenhower warned about, to the financial corporations that have just robbed us blind and on and on.
These interests have an obvious desire to keep the public in the dark and have been quite effective using their right-wing politicos to divert public attention and education by using wedge issues to keep people distracted and willfully ignorant..
Anyway, thank you for this post.. We need a thousand more like it.”

“Great post!
I think Naomi Klein's message about capitalism not only rings true but is also fascinating just to study. Here in Canada, she has been vilified by the righ (yes-we have a right wing)t; one letter to the editor of our so-called national newspaper recently eferred to her as "the worst kind of prostitute" because she sold her soul as a Jewish woman and came out against the state of Israel. These views are not necessarily uncommon, but they are usually left to the truly right wing papers. Too full of blindness and hate for the rest of them!
(btw: I wrote the paper in her defense!!! Couldn't resist!)”

“Very important post. Every year that goes by I am more and more appalled at what is going on
and most of it has to do with factory (ie. corporate) farming. If they aren't poisoning our food supply
with pesticides or herbicides, they are giving us genetically "modified" food or feeding artificial
hormones to our cows, pigs and chickens or they are torturing millions of farm animals in the name
of expediency or feeding them other ground up animals, completely corrupting the natural scheme
of things. How on earth has it come to this? How have they gained such omnipotent power to do
these things without ramifications and how on earth have we let them? SOMEHOW, we have got
to turn things around!
And yes, we do NOT know how all these chemicals are playing subtle havoc with the internal systems.
particularly the nervous systems, of both fetuses and adults - I fear it is much more than we know.”
