“They definitely watched the clip. BBC spent a lot of time following the balloon story that fateful balloon day, so maybe someone misspoke. But I hear ya...No one's perfect. I'll take less crap over more crap anyday. I do love my BBC World News America though.”

“But you're a fool only if you believe them. When I heard she was the hero I was proud of the thought. However I wasn't going to believe anything until I heard it from the horse's own mouth. Why? Because the media - in the midst of the chaos they create - always makes mistakes. They need instant protagonists for their narratives. I can't believe after all this time it's the best they can do.

Thank God for BBC World News America.”

“BBC radio news was yesterday describing how balloon boys family thought that he'd climbed into the 'basket', which was suspended from the balloon, just before take off. No one at the BBC apparently watched the youTube clip of the take off, with no basket in sight. Just an example, they are routinely crap about important stuff too.”

“I wish there were a greater sense of unity when it came to making ourselves heard - or felt. It would be great if we'd all agree to boycott the news (and stick to that). A few days of realizing half of the audience has disappeared might change a few things at news channels. How couldl it not?

At the same time I have to call out Arianna herself - or at least the editors here ar HuffPo. Many of their front page stories are nothing but useless, gossip. I mean it has so cheapened the experience of coming here. There should be a page called the "Idiot's Lair." So at least when you see bonehead stories about someone's bare breasts or more Spencer and Heidi photo ops you know you're in the "Idiot's Lair" and you chose to be there. When a person is simply scanning the front page, what's seen with the eyes can't be taken away. Capisce?

My point is you also can take the lead, Arianna. Instead of waiting to post another retreaded story from cable news look for those hard journalism pieces that might otherwise get overlooked. Personally I'm very proud of what the LA Times does. They do quite a few in-depth stories about many important (and unpleasant) topics; including children and poverty. So there you have it.”

A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Talk About Afghanistan

“God, I know...

MSNBC was on the verge of interviewing three interesting people and before one of them got to open his mouth they stopped with the "Breaking News" hysteria. Yes, it was unusual and scary; but it wasn't day-long material. I think what makes it worse is hearing these anchors mndlessly yapping and scraping the barrel for ANY crumb. I'm normally an MSNBC gal, however their "experts" were awful (which makes it even more befuddling). Surprisingly CNN actually had someone who was helpful and informative. He immediately concluded there was no boy inside. They still chose to spend another three hours on this global fiasco. *eye roll*

The one thing I kept saying to people afterwards was, "Gee, when's the last time a REAL story got three straight hours of TV?"”

“Destin, I am soooo with you.

I spend a great deal of time supporting Obama against his attackers. However when I see the need to speak out against something I disagree with, and do so, I get attacked by my own people. I do NOT believe in following someone blindly. Certainly not a politcal leader. I am no sheeple (always love using that word). I think so many people see Obama as equal parts celebrity and politican, so they can't separate the two. I say go ahead and love the man, but see beyond the celebrity and demand your president to follow through on his promise to end the war. Among other things. I'm getting tired of his continuous attempts to appease the Repugs. Stay classy, Mr President, but no more Mr. Nicey-Pants!”

I agree emphatically: End Bush's war and bring all people from all countries home. It's a tragedy gone on far too long. I deeply hope this is what he's wrestling with and not how many troops to send in. Please oh please let it be that.”

David Letterman's Collateral Damage

Commented Oct 04, 2009 at 20:34:55 in Media

“I hear ya, RobbyJ. But there are worse things to be called, y'know. And some of us do think it's pathetic. It doesn't make us bad people or prudes. It's actually very gross, I feel. The older adult, the one with money and power, has the responsibility to make smart choices. Dave not only made a poor one, he all but flaunted it to his staff daring anyone to object. I would have been furious if I saw someone climb up the ladder so easily as this broad.

I saw this crush of Dave's playing out so clearly on camera years ago. I thought it was so gross the way he fawned over this kid every night in those skits. But it was only a suspicion of a crush. I had no proof. Now that's its' been confirmed it went beyond that and they were shagging, all I can think is "Yuck, Dave. Major yuck"

Peace!”

robbyJ replied on Oct 04, 2009 at 23:24:41

“Having a problem in your life is not pathetic!

Telling everyone your problems on national TV is far from pathetic!

These are women working on a TV show. What kind of "ranks" do you think exist in these TV shows. To me you seem like a person whose furious because you have seen someone passed up through the ranks "as fast as this broad". But I'm afraid there isn't proof of any special promotions.”

David Letterman's Collateral Damage

Commented Oct 04, 2009 at 05:03:01 in Media

“My God, I know it kills everyone to believe it, but others CAN have differing opinions. Why attack someone for expressing hers in a perfectly civil, professional way? Are you that weak that anyone offended by Dave and expressing that is going to somehow overpower your own opinion? This rampant prickly defense reeks of right wing nutters - you know the type. The ones ready to jump in your face railing if you don't see things the way they want or demand. The hypocrisy is amusing.

It's called America - learn to disagree and not attack. Yeesh.”

“I'm not with you 100%, but I do want to thank you for pointing out, among other things, Oprah's double standard. We were in a conference room watching both the Houston and Mackenzie interview and all of us looked at each other. The difference was obvious and off-putting. Somehow Oprah had shifted her persona from coddling and approving to stern and remote. But of course she wanted to align herself with Whitney. Oprah loves to hook arms with celebrities. It seems to make her feel validated. I can't explain it, but my guess is it's something to do with her lonely childhood. Who knows. It's funny how she can rake a James Fry across the coals for his lying, but she could barely look JayZ in the eye when discussing her objection to his usage of the "N" word. She was blushing and smiling even though her reasons were serious and deserved to be raised if not discussed at length.

It's bizarre to me that as a woman of almost 60 Oprah is incapable of standing outside herself and really taking a good look. If she did I think she'd catch the disconnect and double standard.”

mommyatty replied on Sep 28, 2009 at 22:28:48

“Oprah is the champion of anything African-American. Good for her. She owns the pulpit; she is completely entitled to a little self-help affirmative action. But that is what she is about these days. John Travolta, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and anyone African-American.”

“Oh brother...I already know this.

My colleague had been trying to get me to watch the TS DVD well before Oprah featured it on the show. The point was how she created a larger audience - and appetite - for the the LOA approach. I'm continuing on a theme from this blog. Do try to understand the references without getting defensive or thinking you see something that may not be there. I never implied she wasn't grateful, smart or that she used her mentors ungratefully - that is all your interpretation. Why don't you reading it again with a different perspective.

We lack the space to write a perfect thesis here, so I rely on people to to use their common sense and connect the dots.”

“Oprah did something very dangerous with her "The Secret" brainwashing. It's so true that there are many variables which intercede between a person and their dreams. For as rough as her life was Oprah was also gifted with many people who mentored and directed her along the way. She had a father who pushed her to do well in school, and then while still in school she was offered a job in her chosen career....I mean you could look at every year in her life and probably find a key person who "just showed up." Oprah still relies on mentors today. Yes indeed she worked hard to better herself and prepared for a career - but so do a lot of people! Even her talk show was an idea handed to her as was the role in "The Color Purple" handed to her. She can claim it's all about the law of attraction until she's blue in the face: The fact is it was in her destiny to achieve this. Gosh, the woman even claimed several times she never thought or worried about money and now she's one of the wealthiest women around! There was a lot more going on here than LOA. Oprah was always going to be Oprah and everything in the universe conspired to make it so. Others are not so lucky.”

Rhonnybay replied on Sep 08, 2009 at 11:40:54

“1) "The Secret" was HUGE before Oprah put it on her show so this really isn't about Oprah at all
2) Oprah would NOT be Oprah without her believing that she could achieve all that she has. Things just don't conspire without action
3) Oprah always honors her mentors.
4) I don't even like Oprah that much but lets see this clearly

Positive Thinking to me goes along with Faith. I BELIEVE that something will occur. The philosophy behind "Faith" "Hope" or even "The Secret", never says just to just think and hope really hard and wait until it comes. Action is always a part of it. I FIRST must believe it can be accomplished. My thinking and attitude must be in alignment with my actions.

We are all purposed to achieve something. I do agree that how we measure success especially in America would lead some to believe someone has failed because of their economic status.

Nonetheless, I do understand what is being said here.”
Target Women: Brooke Shields

“I personally am turned off by Brooke Shields agreeing to shill so many products for a paycheck. First of all she's an actress selling out. Period. It's degrading to look at. Secondly I don't believe a word of what she says: I know she's getting paid to say whatever it is she's reciting.

The less commercials a well known actor does the better. Plus they are taking away a paycheck from another actor in genuine of income. Now it becomes more a question of greed. I understand Dennis Haysbert selling insurance; Brooke Shields marketing three, four products....? Not so much.”

What Obama Needs to Learn from Sarah Palin

Commented Aug 10, 2009 at 20:20:03 in Politics

“I do not like your title (God, can we just stop giving her any credibility once and for all?), however I wholeheartedly agree with your last paragraph. This ugly tide is rising and it will not go away. Obama CAN deal with it if he chooses. Taking the higher road is a noble thought, but it is not always effective or necessary. I've seen too many intelligent people think they're above responding to ridiculous claims from ridiculous people. In my opinion that very silence is precisely what gives them the permission to go on. We need to respond and quite virgorously so.”
