Why Hasn't There Been a Progressive March on DC?

“Oh... and it only took ONE Constitutional amendment to end slavery (the 13th). The other deals w/ citizenship of the already freed slaves.”

hp blogger Linda R. Monk, J.D. replied on Dec 21, 2009 at 17:17:13

“He knows that. But without citizenship and the vote, African Americans would have suffered under "the badges and incidents of slavery" even longer.”

“Great post. I agree. It's like the Dems and so afraid of the Repubs... that they are allowing them to still run the show.”

“OMG... there are so many places in the above piece that I wanted to c&p and say "amen" to... but to keep it short and sweet... I'll just c&p the part that is most similar to what I've been trying to say for months now...

You want to win the center? Emanate strength. Emanate conviction. Lead like you know where you're going (and hopefully know what you're talking about).

People in the center will follow if you speak to their values, address their ambivalence (because by definition, on a wide range of issues, they're torn between the right and left), and act on what you believe. FDR did it. LBJ did it. Reagan did it. Even George W. Bush did it, although I wish he hadn't.

But you have to believe something.

Amen, Dr. Western. Amen !”

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 18:05:49 in Politics

“Yes... let's thank the Senator for making the Republicans argument better than they could ever do. I guess they were right all along and health care COULD be reformed w/o a government option. Maybe next time the independents like myself will just listen to what the Republicans say at the beginning insted of wasting time w/ the Democrats who basically argue themselves into agreeing w/ the republicans anyway.”

A Rebuttal to Howard Dean: I Am a U.S. Senator, and I Will Vote For This Bill

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 18:00:47 in Politics

“Senator.. you are right. This is exactly what the Repubs said at the beginning of this debate... that reform could be done w/o a public option. Thank you for proving their point and making Dems and us independents that listened to you and told people that there could be no real reform w/o a public option look like idiots. I hope you don't mind when you are up for re election if we return the favor.”

“I agree. The House even called it Medicare, part E. But it got shot down really quick. The funny thing about this health care debate... it could have been over months ago if the Dems had just realized they agreed w/ the Repubs that they could reform health care w/o a public option. Now they've wasted 6 months and considerable political capital to do just what the Republicans said could be done.”

The Health Insurance and Drug Industry Profit Protection Act Sucks and Should be Killed

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 09:58:36 in Politics

“I said this elsewhere... but it's appropriate to repeat here.

Six months ago, the Republicans were saying health care could be reformed w/o a public option. Now... the Democrats are trying to convince us of the same. This could have been done and over w/ back in June if the Dems had just agreed w/ the Repubs from the get go. Instead, they waste 6 months of taxpayer time and money, not to mention the time and energy of all the people who made phone calls, wrote letters and sent emails to their Reps and Senators demanding a public option... just to compromise themselves into the Repubs position. And the transition was so smooth... I don't think a lot of the Dems even realize they are parroting the Repubs.

The Repubs may not have a lot of education... but they sure no how to get the Dems to come around to their way of thinking.”

Barack Obama, Inc.

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 09:37:09 in Politics

“Wow... just wow.

Throughout the campaign... Cenk, among others, was one of Obama's biggest cheerleaders. Instead of just denigrating him... why not try to see where these people are coming from? Why not ask what could make these people go from cheering Obama to criticizing him? I seriously think Dems are doomed because the really refuse to look at themselves to see just what they may have done to turn people off or what they could do to bring people back. Instead... you would rather push them further away.

Again... wow.”

TN60 replied on Dec 18, 2009 at 10:45:02

“I've been reading Cenk, right along. It is the Republicans who are purging their party and are now a regional party of white Dixiecrats.

He will most often than not, rant about what this President doesn't do and I'm tired of it. If the Republicans can divide us, then their wish will come true. They regain power.”

“Great article... and you even saved the best for last...

Maybe I should just get used to it. Money runs the world and no matter what a politician -- any politician -- promises you, they're going to do what their corporate overlords told them in the end. But I don't want to get used to it. I want to fight it. I'm not Barack Obama. I actually have hope that we can in fact change the system. That's the change I believe in and the change that Barack Obama has definitely not delivered so far.

Kudos to you !!!!!”

Why the Left Fails

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 21:59:38 in Politics

“That's one of the things that bothers me too. Bush, rightfully so, gets blamed for all of the bad legislation that was passed during his administration... but now... it's the CONGRESS who should be held account... not the President... because he doesn't write legislation.

The left fails... because they want to have it both ways.”

hyjanks replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 22:32:18

“The Left has failed because of cowardice under fire (from Republicans) at home. The irony here is that it is the Kerrys, the Kennedys, Max Baucaus and several hundred other Democrats of note in high office were the ones earning their combat medals in Viet Nam while the likes of Cheney, Bush, Gingrich and other mealy-mouth, abject cowards in the Republican party spent their time at home cheering on the suckers who fought their wars for them.”

Please, Cut Obama Some Slack

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 13:23:56 in Politics

“Here is where the problem lies.

He would have been the victim of a new stab-in-the-back legend on the right that might well have destroyed his presidency before it even had the chance to get off the ground.

In other words... he should be more concerned about what the right (who has said they want him to fail) wants... instead of the left, who brought him into office to succeed.

W/ that type of thinking... it's no wonder we are where we are. In fact... if all we are going to do are things that keep the right happy... why not just keep Repubs in charge???”
