“And that is fine, honestly, I can see how many people are so upset. Apology accepted, I do readily admit there are those out there who do it out of ignorance and racism, sadly. There are simply too many that are simply putting right of any kind into right-wing. Anyone who takes their child out of school because of it is an idiot, by the way, for the record.

I will say this though, he has no duty to reach out to those people, those far rights, but if wanted to, he could have done it easily by tweaking how he did things with this, not what he did.

Then again both sides far wings don't usually listen anyway lol”

“I also don't remember another president releasing a set of lesson plans to go along with it.”

“Last time I'm gonna try this,

The only reason i would have preferred him to release it earlier is because there were lesson plans involved with it.

If there had been no lesson plans, I wouldn't have cared if he released the speech before or not.

If a teacher were to represent a lesson plan to someone to use, and not presented the material that the lesson plan was based on at the same time, that teacher would have issues using that lesson plan.

I really don't think that is being racist, its called proper education practice.

I'll even say this, the only people that truly had a right to know about the lesson plan were the teachers/administrators who might be using them. If they had never said there were a set of lesson plans, and quietly sent them to those positions, I'd have even been fine with that.

I am not advocating people's reaction, people pulling their kids out of school is ridiculous. But I am pointing out how 1-2 simple changes could have prevented all of this. Not even changes, just going about it a little differently.”

“To the response below since it won't let me reply.

Teachers make lesson plans. It's our job. It is not the goverment's job to make lesson plans.

He shouldn't have to succumb to anyone, but part of being a good diplomat is anticipating possible problems that might arise from a decision and to factor that in to how you deal with a situation. Tact.

Sidenote; My school doesn't start tomorrow, so for everyone in my state (FL), this is not first day stuff, this is in the week most of us are giving our first tests, dealing with quarterly assessment tests, and trying to get on task. We are trying to get into our set, and anything that is a break from that, is honestly a lot more of a disruption that it may seem.

I would love to know how you jump from me being opposed to their being lesson plans with a speech, to I'm a racist. The far rights are out of control, but so are people making baseless accusations about people being racist. At one point someone has got to be able to disagree with someone of a different race and not be called a racist.”

“If he had released this great speech when he made the announcement, there would have been a great deal less people upset.

And please be careful who you throw into the right.”

“I was opposed to the fact that there was a set of lesson plans. You also have to realize that the timetable with this whole mess was done "stupidly." The day before the speech, the text is released, so the school administrations have no official days to actually look at it as a school and go from there. They have lesson plans and can't look at the speech. It is one thing to speak to the children, it is not the same thing when you provide a set of lesson plans for the teachers to follow.

And yes, they don't have to, but it still falls into the category of things that can polarize a group. Whether a teacher follows them or not, they will be questioned by at least some people why they did/didn't, and that is effectively bringing politics into the classroom.

I'd have been more than fine if Obama had just done the speech, released the speech when he made the announcement, and been done with it. Great idea, was handled patheticly.”

“1. Nothing wrong with a lesson plan

2. Obama had no reason to release the speech prior to delivering it at all. Reagan, Bush H.W., Bush 43, and Clinton, all addressed our children in a similar fashion. NEVER was there a request from the right (or anyone else), to RELEASE IT AHEAD OF TIME. THAT IS CR.AP.

3. It wasn't handled pathetically, it was reacted to pathetically by the right.

Finally, this confirms my opinion. This whole brouhaha was about nothing more than racism.

You people, need to find another country to live in, because we {the MAJORITY} are DAM.NTIRED OF THIS NONSENSE.

And yes, I am mad as he//. I'll stop being mad when the Repubs stop acting like the sorest bunch of l0sers ever.”

“You may not be heaping those terms on everyone, but the majority of people do not distinguish between right and far right. Simply, they use the term Republicans.

Thank you for telling me how I can be classified as a moderate, shows a lot of insight telling me where I stand, of course that is what everyone in this thread has been doing.

YOU may not be grouping all of those in, but read back through all of the posts here and see how many people are just lumping anyone right of center as whackos, racists, etc.

For the record my only problem was with the lesson plans, not with him speaking. I have no problem with the president speaking with our children, as many children have before. I have presented this issue elsewhere, solely on the lesson plan, and the response was that it was cleverly shrouded racism.”

“Funny that you didn't describe this "great point". I would be very Ieery of clicking on anything where two consecutive posters have been so coy about details.”

“I wouldn't advise clicking on links here when you don't know where they go. People post "bad" links all the time. In fact, the other day a guy posted a bunch of links leading to a site which froze your computer when you landed on it.

A number of people had major problems before HP banned him.”

“I would likely to roundly thank everyone here.

I am a moderate (not extremist) conservative. I had no objection to him speaking to the children, just the way his administration went about doing it. If I had children I wouldn't have even thought for a second to pull them so they couldn't see his speech.

However, at the heart I am still a moderate conservative Christian. That being said.

Thank you for calling me ignorant, racist, prejudiced, hateful, and basically the problem with everything in our world. I am sorry that I have a mind with my own thoughts, that lies somewhere between your views and the far lefts. I am sorry that because I am not a Democrat, I am automatically extremist right, and that unfortunately everyone of my views are those you perceive to be right along with Beck, Limbaugh and others.

I thank you for pushing all the hate on me, as I now realize that not only are the far right people crazy, but now I realize I can not have a dissenting opinion without something being wrong with me.”

“Pace77, this forum is overrun with mean spirited, brainwashed, sophomoric fools. Spend your time elsewhere.”

nicole473 on Sep 7, 2009 at 14:57:07

“Ah, over simplify the issue in order to make us feel remorseful. Good ploy.

FYI, when we heap terms such as "ignorant, racist, prejudiced, hateful, et al" on right wingers, we are speaking to the religious right/the far right. If that is you, no apology would I care to offer to a group that is completely DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY.

If you were truly a moderate, you would not have been concerned about the speech at all. I have conservative friends who are just as appalled by this as I am, and dislike the far right even more than I do.”
