“The Bard didn't mix his metaphors, you did, when you smelled Levin being hoist by his petar(d)”

donnyquixote replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 14:01:33

“Look at the source, it's "petar" and I used that (in lieu of petard) to suggest that Levin undercut his own argument by using that which he denounced; filling factual gaps with emotion and wild conjecture. Such lousy argument style qualifies for being compared to flatus.”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 11:18:59 in Politics

“The LGBT community has proven unable aside their differences to fight their way out of a paper bag.

Men vs Women, Are Bi's accepted into either camp, let alone Trans folks? white vs color, able to pass vs out, age vs youth, HIV/AIDS, parental rights, partner rights, hate crime protection, workplace discrimination, gays in the military. Fight one at a time or all at once? Prop 8, DOMA, DADT prove that a divided house cannot stand for long and that the leadership in the gay community has been proven inept, untrustworthy, or unable to set aside their own differences for the common good.

This struggle must be seen as a CIVIL RIGHTS issue, first, last and always.

This country was founded on the principle that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL and laws must not be pass which infringe on an individual's rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, with liberty and justice for ALL.

A white congress voted to grant African Americans equality. An all male congress voted to grant women the right to vote. Congress is no longer, all male, all white nor all straight. If not now, when?

Obama is able to show this to be a CIVIL RIGHTS case in a way and with a force that no white president could never do. If Obama can carry water for this progressive and civil liberties cause, I say, why wait?”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 10:38:13 in Politics

“My point exactly.

Obama can put his money where his mouth (has historically been) and with the power he has NOW, can do the right thing, sign an EO and prove gays and lesbians are a valuable asset to this nation. If he/we wait for Congress for a repeal of DADT, it may or may not happen, and we are once more, beholden to the kindness of strangers. Presented with a fait accompli, I have faith progressives can fight any push to reinstate it.”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 00:45:12 in Politics

“It's about civil rights, equal rights and one nation, with liberty and justice for ALL.

DOMA must be repealed. Period.

Obama should sign an Executive Order to stop DADT. There's no way Congress will try to reinstate it after it's been stopped and it becomes clear to EVERYONE that this is the right, sensible, moral, and practical thing to do.”

SusanStoHelit replied on Oct 08, 2009 at 02:14:49

“Yeah - then the next homophobic President who is elected can just sign an executive order, and all the gays serving openly in the military get booted out.

He must do this right, or not at all - and that means through Congress.”

eweqo replied on Oct 08, 2009 at 01:06:09

“I believe gay rights are special rights, but DADT was really stupid. I served with many courageous gays in Vietnam.”

Artist Rally Behind Polanski

Commented Oct 02, 2009 at 11:43:10 in Entertainment

“Polanski d.r.u.g.g.e.d and r.a.p.e.d a 13-year-old girl and then skipped town. Sorry, there's no excusing that. Ever.

I read the news today. Oh Boy.

Archie Whalen, is facing k.i.d.n.a.p. charges in connection with the alleged abduction of a 13-year-old girl.

Randy Reed stands trial on charges related to multiple burglaries, s.e.x offenses with juveniles.

A s.e.x offender k.i.d.n.a.p.p.e.d a 9-year-old girl as she walked to a bus stop last week, held her at kn1fe-p0int and kept her tied up in a closet.

Phillip Garrido, Brian David Mitchell. Why calls c.a.s.t.r.a.t.e these people, yet "artists" should receive special consideration?

Listen, I'm an artist (my lithos hang in the Montreal Musee de Beaux Arts) and a filmmaker (twenty years in Montreal and Hollywood) and I say NOBODY should get a pass. It's one thing if someone wants to abuse drugs and alcohol and ruin your own life, but when you d.r.u.g and r.a.p.e another human being, let alone a child, it's not your creativity that is in question.

Polanski may be proven innocent (look at O.J.) but he must stand trial. That does not make him a "martyr of a politico-legal imbroglio".”

AgentMacGyver replied on Oct 02, 2009 at 19:59:41

Does Humana Have a Free Speech Right To Mislead The Elderly?

Commented Sep 24, 2009 at 11:31:01 in Politics

“Of course corporations are individuals. They can do whatever they want.

Since money equals speech, they have the right to free speech - lots of it.

They have freedom of religion (Ask Scientology)

They have the right to a fair trial (just ask Microsoft or Halliburton)

They have the right to bear arms (Just ask Blackwater)

They have the privilege of traveling (Ask any company which has headquarters and factories off-shore)

They have the right to vote (who needs the right to vote when the write the laws? Isn't Pat Roberts asking for a delay in voting on health care reform so the industry lobbyists can read the legislation and tell senators how to vote? Same diff)

Why don't we just cut to the chase and allow them to run for office? Congressman AT&T, or Senator Citibank...

Zombie banks is right. Corporations are zombies - they can never d13.

Now they're demanding "tort reform" so we MORTAL citizens can't sue them when they endanger or harm us.

Wouldn't it be nice if we can PROVE (and we can) that through their negligence or actions these "health care" companies who have hastened or brought about even one d3@th, we could exact corporate capital punishment on them, same as would happen to one of us?”

PR one replied on Sep 24, 2009 at 12:32:25

“It was St. Ronnie who said that, 'government is not the answer, government is the problem'.
Why don't we allowed corporations to run all phases of government and to have all
citizens pay those corporations the services they want to subscribe to.
For instance, if you want police protection, you pay a police protection fee.
If you pay for a year worth of protection, you get a discount. And this can apply for
all services, like, transportation, school, courts, armed services and so on.
There is already a service that is run privately, health providers. Notice how
efficiently it is run? :) LOL.”

but let's see...my great great great great great grandmother's family were Cree and have lived here in North America for thousands of years. Her family met my great great great great great grandfather's family when they arrived on Lord Selkirk's first ship, from the old world, before The United States, Canada or Mexico even existed. My ancestors were the first Premier of the province of Manitoba as well as that province's first sheriff, so they wrote, passed and enforced our immigration laws.

My family welcomes your family to the new world.”

“Of course Dobbs, Rush, Hannity, Beck et al have a right to free speech. The thing is, Dobbs' speech is not "free" in that advertisers pay the network, and the network in turn pays him, to spew his vitriol.

Remember, the Supreme Court decided that money is speech.

We also get to say if we want our dollars spent in such a way - i.e. we communicate (freely) with the sponsors and tell then unless they stop using our money to pay for the xenophobic garbage, but instead on programming that allows for true dialogue, we'll stop paying them.

We cut off his tongue. He can continue spewing his hate all he wants, for free - I'd just refusing to pay him for his privelidge.

It is quite literally a marketplace of ideas.

He just doesn't subscribe to the adage that the customer is always right.”

These businesses either pay foreign workers on foreign soil by setting up their factories abroad or pay peanuts to undocumented workers here.

Despite the fact that we cry for corporations to become more ethical, honest, humane, and socially responsible, corporations are legally mandated to make money for their shareholders as a primary goal.

The Dobbs of this world are racist on one hand, yes, but in the pockets of big business on the other. These two ends are increasingly at odds. We can hit Dbbs where he lives; in the pocket book, by doing what we are doing to Glen Beck - tell his advertizers we will not give them another red cent until they stop giving that money to Dobbs for him to insult and incite hatred any longer. They'll pay attention to that.”

“I was just having lunch with my eleven year old daughter who was explaining to her nine year old brother that "everyone will eventually die, and so what's the big deal? I mean, it's natural. Don't be afraid of death. If you want to be afraid, be afraid of pain."

She's so cool.

I helped my mother die - at home, in her own bed, surrounded by loving family, with medication to ease her pain.

It was a beautiful death.

This society needs to come to terms with sex and death. They are both natural. One inevitably leads to the other.

I'd rather have my doctor help me die well than live poorly an extra few months.

Our society has far too many hang-ups about sexuality, sex and the inevitable end of life we call death. I do not need or want anyone else involved in my decision making as to how my life should end. My spouse and children all know that I do not want any machinery or tubes or other interference preventing the natural course of things. When my body ceases to function, let it go. Do not trap my soul by forcing the body to barely exist.

I've other places to be, things to do, because I am finished here is my philosophy. Honor me be honoring it.”

The Right to a Fair Trial, Right to a Jury of Your Peers, The Right of Women to Vote, The Right to Travel, The Right to Marriage, The Right to Procreate, The Right to Privacy, The Right to Education. There are more.

“This is Obama's Whitewater.

This is the issue the GOP will hammer and hammer 'til the cows come home, in an effort to undermine the administration, evidence be damned. It is a placeholder pseudo argument being used as a parry to the Obama thrust, to be used until a "real" crisis can be found (a la Monica Lewinski).

With no policy nor legislation of their own, the GOP game plan (as leaked last week) is to s-l-o-w everything down in order to ensure the Democrats get nothing done. The point of this movement is not to prove Obama is, or is not, legitimately the sitting President. The point is to keep the shiny bauble glittering so the MSM keeps talking about it, rather than about the lack of a GOP plan on health care, their ruining of the environment, their lack of a plan for peace in the middle east, their part played by Cheney's father in manipulating the price of oil, the ruining of the world economy and historically high domestic unemployment figures, loss of manufacturing jobs, the dead in two wars of aggression, torture, illegal wiretapping and their attempt to stonewall a competent new Supreme Court Justice. Lynne Cheney needs to be put out of our misery.”
