Leadership, Obama Style, and the Looming Losses in 2010: Pretty Speeches, Compromised Values, and the Quest for the Lowest Common Denominator

“Wrong. People do not expect Obama to be Kucinich. People expect Obama to be the Obama he pretended to be on the campaign trail. Your comment implies all these people are just making up stuff, like they didn't pay attention during the campaign.. .and that couldn't be further from the truth.
I saw EVERY debate except one (the controversial one on ABC) and I paid attention for over 2 years, studied each candidate, researched background, etc.
I know what I know, and I know for a fact this guy in the White House sold a lot of eager folks a bill of goods. Please stop with the insulting, "you weren't paying attention" tripe.”

“I won't go as far as saying that you didn't pay attention (I don't know you, so maybe you tried really hard to pay attention), but I do agree with worldman49. I even think that if Kucinich would have been elected, he surely wouldn't have been able to get more out of Congress than Obama is getting today.”

“Mr. Western, you are now of my favorites. This article is spot-on. I have not read a better, more accurate assessment of this president to date. Thank you for your eloquence. I've been screaming this for so long, it's almost surreal to see someone who not only agrees, but who lays it out right front and center. Right-on!”

“I don't know. Maybe there's something to this. From my perspective, the only thing George Bush and Barack Obama have in common is that neither one is "great president" material. Bush was neither smart or competent. Obama is smart, but he is not a leader. He disguises himself as one, but in reality he has very little independent thought and is very much a run-of-the-mill politician (though a very effective one). He is not an FDR or Truman. You have to have the ability to envision something and step boldy towards that vision. Obama just does not have it. He is a conciliator at his core, more concerned with being popular than principled. These are just facts.”

“I believe Obama does have the ability to "envision something and take steps boldly towards that vision" but the problem lies in a party that is stronger than Obama. Big Business AND Big Labor are both driving forces behing the Democratic party and neither will let Obama reach a goal.
He claims to be open, but the reality is that truly being open (keeping promises to broadcast the Health debate would weaken the position of too many Business controlled Democratic Senators.
So I mostly agree; Obama has vision and can manipulate but is NOT a leader.”

“I agree, PalmG. Obama has risen to the level of his incompetency a la the Peter Principle. His invoking the years-old non-secret of the Iranian nuclear materials site in order to appear decisive (and wag the dog) when his wavering over his unwavering stance on the Afghan War was starting to eat him alive politically s -- IMHO -- a perfect example.
But he still gives great speeches ... it's just that now that we know we can't believe what he says ... it kind of takes the oomph out of 'em ... from my pov.”

“I don't think I was overly-enthralled as many, but I did appreciate this and I'm grateful you highlighted Mr. Begala: "He decried how the Bush tax cuts, the Bush war in Iraq and the Bush prescription drug plan helped explode the deficit, squandering the Clinton surplus and plunging us deep in debt. No one who voted for that unholy trinity -- and a whole lot of Blue Dogs did -- can credibly oppose Obama's health reforms on fiscal grounds."”

“What's the difference in torturing and then eating an animal?”
DanFranque replied on Aug 17, 2009 at 14:08:59
“Like, I said, I agree with his basic point. To compare Vick to meat producers and consumers is ludicrous. The Meat Producers do not believe in their cruelety and aren't out to have to have sadistic fun and the consumer isn't either. Many consumers pray for the animals. The point is well taken about the lack of compassion for food animals, not to mention the health risks.”

“Thank you for this post Alec Baldwin. I found it well-balanced and LOGICAL--something that seems to allude the hate-Vick crowd. It's especially refreshing to hear this come from a White man. Whether we like to think about it or not, for some reason this Vick situation took on a race element. Most Blacks seemed to support him; most Whites seemed to want to burn him at the stake.”

Do you think that if Peyton Manning, rather than Vick, had been the one caught fighting and torturing dogs, people would have said it was ok?”

Very dangerous assumptions the writer makes.”

“I have to co-sign your assessment of Nancy Pelosi's dress. I thought I was the only one who noticed. That lady is ALWAYS impeccably dressed! I don't think I've ever seen her in a dud. She has fashion for miles. Very classic look. I'm not a fan of her as a speaker, but I have to give her credit for always being on-point in her dress. A lot of people don't seem to notice this for some reason.”
