“I think somebody must have good credit ratings to switch and put the balance elsewhere., and even that is fraught with peril.

My sister did ....she had an absolutely sterling credit rating, and switched to the one that brags about low rates...the one with the Huns. She paid faithfully, but they still claimed her payment was late (and she had mailed it 6 days before the due date), and they slammed with a huge increase in her interest rate, and probably stuck their knife into her perfect credit rating.

Ten years after we moved from CT, the city we lived in tried to charge us several thousand dollars for property tax and huge penalties on our car.. Nevermind that we sold the house and never renewed the plates. They threatened to "ruin your credit rating" if we didn't pay. We were able to prove that we hadn't lived there and they dropped the claim, but I'll bet our credit rating took a big hit. There seem to be no regulations on collection agencies, and no vetting of claims against people....just a lot of threats and attempts to scare people into paying money that they don't even owe.

The little guy, as I said above, has no power anymore to make things fair. This is the Republican free-market in operation, and the Blue Dog wannabee Republicans who take big money from crooked corporations aren't any better.”
