“I don't claim to know the truth of what happened. For all I know, it could've played out exactly as reported. But I do know it's the holidays, and people are desperate to hear a positive spin on a terrible news story like this. And considering the track record of bad reporting when it comes to stories like this, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out months from now it never happened.”

“How about Uli Derickson? She was the flight attendant who managed to save all but 31 passengers (one was killed, the other 30 released 17 days later) from TWA Flight 847, Father's Day weekend of 1985.
Among the passengers were 2 church groups visiting The Holy Land, including one from my then home town of Algonquin, Il. I lived across the street from the Catholic church the hijacked group was from, & it was very strange to see the international press descending upon the church & the town.
Algonquin was then a town of 8,000 with just one stoplight, and everyone knew everyone else. When the story came out about Ms. Derickson's heroism, the town invited her to a welcome home parade & celebration for the church group members. She attended & was made to feel a part of our town. The people who remember still are grateful for her acts.
She died in 2005. Here are links to a NYT article about her, and to the "Blog Of Death", because there are many personal tributes to her there. She was the real deal.

“This is it. I'm done.
When the initial reports surfaced that Obama planned to dump the public option from the start, I chose not to believe any of it, and continued to give him the benefit of the doubt. Now, it appears the rumors are true. It's with great sadness that I withdraw my support for this President.
I worked my heart out for the public option - carrying signs at rallies, doubling my phone bills with calls to Congress, and donating hard earned money to the cause. If I had any inkling that Obama planned to sell us out all along, I would've simply stayed home. Why waste my time and energy? Why get my hopes up like that?
I continue to hope for our President to do some good in the next 3 years, but he will not have my support or my vote in 2012. He is clearly on the side of big corporations - not us.”

And, no, you didn't carry those signs for nothing. It got us to this point..... and keeping it alive will get us further along the road, though it might take a decade or longer.
Remember that Civil Rights Legislation didn't happen overnight either.”

“For all those saying this is a step in the right direction - that they may eventually expand Medicare to everybody - keep in mind it's taken 40 years to (potentially) lower the age down to 55. And, as we've witnessed, it's such a hot button issue, politicians are afraid to tackle it (not to mention, in bed with the insurance companies). At this rate, we'll all be long de.ad by the time Medicare eligibility expands to everybody.”
