“The 2005 LA Metrolink derailment killed 11 people and was settled today for $30 million. A year ago another Metrolink accident killed 25 people - betcha that will settle for over $200 million.
The second accident was caused by a single engineer who was texting instead of paying attention to the signals. One guy to drive a train full of 100 people because "it costs too much to have a second pair of eyes".
How much are airlines saving for paying sub-living wages? What is the risk to the flying public? We already had a crash in Buffalo where the pilot was not very experienced and had to go long hours just to get to the airplane which she was flying.
Instead of an airline declaring bankruptcy when a crash happens, hold the CEO responsible with jail.
Let's see what happens to pilot's wages then.”

Because single-payer cannot get a majority of House votes and 50 Senate votes after a 60-person cloture vote.
It would be cheaper, because cannot dissolve a multibillion dollar industry overnight and not expect all hell to break loose. You would guarantee that Blue Dog dems in conservative districts would lose their seats.”

“Problem is, what I heard of the speech last nite is now every American is gonna be charged to support the world's least efficient health care system.
No public option is necessary - it's just the means to an end.
And what would that end be?
Access to healthcare in America isn't a right - its a way to subsidize insurance companies.
We need a socialist party to roll back the corporate welfare state created by the Democrats and Republicans.”

Building A New Economy: What Obama's Next Big Speech Should Be
Commented Sep 09, 2009 at 14:16:13 in Politics
“Exactly.
The price of energy independence is for Americans to get out of their cars.
Mass transit is the way forward. Think of the boost to the economy when we spend billions to build a 21st century mass transit infrastructure that is so efficient you don't even need to own a car. No more car payments, insurance premiums, repair bills or gasoline costs. And the system will be working for us in the future, just as the dams and bridges built in the 1930s.”

“"You are forgetting that 9/11 was an attack on US soil and that we were obliged, along with NATO, to go into Afghanistan to get Bin Laden."
Obliged? That plays right into the hands of the terrorists.
Arguably our best course of action on 9/12/01 was to forgive the terrorists.
No Afghan/Iraq war - spending blood and treasure for.... nothing.
No Patriot Act, no unlimited wiretapping by the US govt on Americans, no holding Americans without charges and access to council in violation of Habius Corpus.
No Gitmo - no torture of detainees, no violation of the Geneva Convention
In short, our economy, our military, our civil liberties and most importantly our honor would all be in a much better place today if we had simply forgiven the attackers.”
