Adam Lambert: The Controversy Is Because I'm Gay (VIDEO)
Commented Nov 26, 2009 at 22:07:16 in Entertainment
“You're certainly entitled to your opinion, R20, as am I. I was simply trying to say that Lambert's performance will not help you in your fight to attain marital rights in this country, even though that result was unintentional. Blatant male homosexual behavior in a public forum (the awards telecast) just serves to remind the millions of heterosexual viewers of this show that you are not like them. I remind you that the states that recognize gay marriage have only been able to do so via court order. There is no state in this country that has had a public referendum on gay marriage and passed it via popular vote, including the so-called enlightened state of California.
Personally, R20, I couldn't care less who you marry. It's your business. But I'm not the one you need to convince. Homosexuals are outnumbered in this fight, by people who do care and who find gay marriage dangerous to their lifestyles. Lambert's performance will not allay those fears. If you consider that hypocracy, so be it. I'm just calling it as I see it.”

“Look, here's the bottom line: while it's certainly not Adam Lambert's job to be a role model for gay male America, the fact that he is a performing celebrity and highly identified gay male with access to large audiences means his actions become a reflection of that community, whether he likes it or not.
America in general is not a gay-friendly place; in every instance where gay marriage was put to a general vote, it has been defeated. As such, Lambert's performance on the AMA's only serves to reinforce the worst stereotypes of gay male behavior, to an audience all too ready to believe those stereotypes to begin with. It doesn't matter whether heterosexuals have pushed the sexual envelope in performance before - we simply don't want to see gay men doing it. It may not be fair, but it's true.
Gay men and women have expended a great deal of effort and energy to convince the gen pop that they should be treated equally under the law. While this is and should be the ideal, the reality is that Lambert's performance sets this agenda back, not because it was intended to do so but simply because it does.”

“I don't know, but your comment sounds a bit old already! You have much to say, but among so many words, I still hear nothing more than discrimination. I'd say, equal rights for all or to anyone, that's all. Excuse me, is my opinion, and as a gay man who has been denied the right to marry the man I want, a right that has been denied by no less than heterosexual persons, at least, I shall use one of the few rights that have not been able to take off, and say that your comment sounds a bit hypocritical.”

“Exactly, SM. I imagine, however, that in the US, your agreement with your ISP contains language saying it can terminate service unilaterally at any time, for any reason or no reason. As CL says below, for any tracking routine that is created, the truly tech savvy will create a work around and distribute to the masses. That's not the way to change behavior. Subscription is the only way to go. Create a studio consortium that charges a monthly fee for unlimited downloading of movies, that subscribers can keep but not redistribute. Same can be done with the record labels.”

No Doubt Sues Activision, Avatar Sings to a Different Song
Commented Nov 12, 2009 at 18:40:20 in Entertainment
“Your final paragraph assumes that the members of No Doubt would have knowledge of all the possible permutations of those avatars. They are not game developers. How could they possibly know that such manipulation was even possible? It doesn't appear to be incumbent upon Activision to spell all the possibilities out beforehand. It would probably be best to simply spell out all the things the band DOESN'T want the avatars to be able to do.
And BTW, is it such a big deal that Stefani's voice in the game can be different than her actual voice? It's a game, after all. Any serious No Doubt fan would know this. What actual damage has this caused?”

“Since "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" came out in 2007, Activision has added major artists as playable avatars in the Guitar Hero franchise. Around 30 artists have been added to these games, and in nearly every case, those avatars could perform to any song in the game's playlist. Sting, Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Ozzy Osbourne and a boatload of others could be set up to play to songs that they had no creative hand in. None of these stars, living or dead, had complaints.
Now, two years later, we have two cases - No Doubt/Band Hero and the Kurt Cobain/Guitar Hero 5 controversy - proving these artists (or the executors of their estates) just aren't paying attention to the way these games work. If No Doubt had picked up any of the five avatar-enabled Guitar Hero games that predated Band Hero, they'd know that their own avatars would be manipulated as they are in the game and could either seek alternate negotiations for their appearances or opt out altogether.
This detail seems to be overlooked by everyone who's reported on the alleged controversy and I just thought I'd share what I (and, I'm sure, a host of fellow Guitar Hero players) know about the games - and, thus, why No Doubt doesn't seem to have a leg to stand on here.”

“Agree. Promoters and artists must change their short term thinking and realize that the concert business cannot be sustained over time when the average Live Nation customer sees less than 2 shows a year. They save it for the one or two acts they believe are worth the ridiculous prices. Unfortunately, those acts (Prince, Springsteen, Bon Jovi, U2, Madonna, Stones, etc.) will neither live or tour forever and there are no up and coming acts in the bullpen that customers will pay the same rates to see.
Live Nation is trying, with its No Fee Wednesdays and reduced prices for tours that are selling poorly. This is way too little, too late. Concert going must become habitual in order to survive. Cut prices before tours tank, get people out to the arenas and they may have a shot. Nothing in the world better than seeing a great live band at the top of its game.”

I couldn't care less what other so-called mega artists are charging. They are free to charge whatever they please as well. But if they project a "man of the people" public image while doing so, I'll call them out as well.”

“Paw1, I think you're right, but concert costs, in general, are kind of ridiculous. The problem is the cost of putting on "event" concerts, the staging costs of those being obnoxious and then passed on to the fans. Sometimes it seems that even the acts themselves are a bit oblivious to those expenses, leaving such concepts with their business managers, etc. Over the years, Bon Jovi hasn't really struck me as a band that pillages its fans for the dough, I think Jon really does believe what he's singing about and saying.”
Murdoch May Block Google Searches Entirely From His Newspaper Sites
Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 16:52:50 in Media
“Murdoch is certainly within his rights to insist that Google doesn't carry stories from his news organizations. Google is also within their rights to block whatever they want to from their search index. What Murdoch fails to realize is that the paywall only works when the commodity being sold isn't readily available elsewhere. The Wall Street Journal is the primary financial news source in America. He can, and does, make a paywall work there.
With the amount of general news available 24/7 from myriad sources, many of which consumers already pay for (cable sub fees, broadband fees), erecting a general news paywall will be one of his biggest mistakes.”

“I believe Bon Jovi would have slightly more "working man" credibility in my eyes if it cost less than a month's rent to see one of his shows. A halfway decent seat in the Meadowlands (with 80,000 of your closest friends) is $150 ($170 after Ticketmaster). With a beer, travel and a t-shirt each, that's a $450 night for a couple. No thanks. Plus, musically Bon Jovi is Sominex.
As for AC/DC, since they haven't released a memorable record since BACK IN BLACK (most of the lyrics of which were rumored to be written by Bon Scott) I recommend the BONFIRE box set most heartily. Leave this on the shelf where it belongs.”

Is Lady Gaga Turning Into Amy Winehouse? (PHOTOS, POLL)
Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 15:22:40 in Entertainment
“If she and her fans dig the look, more power to them. Professionally speaking, Winehouse has been off the road and out of the studio so long, it's doubtful she can achieve the level of star power she had a few years ago. Not unless her comeback record is outstanding. If GaGa maintains her work ethic and keeps the publicity machine stoked, she could achieve Britney level longevity. That's about as good as it gets for machine music, where the dancers and costumes are the show.”
