“For me, I knew I was gay certainly by the time before I graduated from High school.
Schools are a very scary place for a person to "come out"
I recommend that high schools adopt a very good program, The gay straight Alliance. From their website:
http://gsa network.or g/about-us
Gay-Straight Alliance Network is a youth leadership organization that connects school-based Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) to each other and community resources through peer support, leadership development, and training.
GSA Network supports young people in starting, strengthening, and sustaining GSAs and builds the capacity of GSAs to:
create safe environments in schools for students to support each other and learn about homophobia and other oppressions,
educate the school community about homophobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and
fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools.
There were so many gay people in my high school, but nobody was really out. I think I was the only one, and I left half day to go to the community college! Well, let me tell you, as adults now on Facebook we are all out.
This program needs to be told to your former high school if they do not have it.
You could literally help save a life.
Best regards,
PhilipB”

“Very thoughtfully expressed. Thank you. mikeijames.
I know that it is only because of good, decent tax paying Americans who have stood up for equality that any progress has been made.
There is nothing to celebrate when rights are stripped away by popular vote.
I think the outrage I feel at being legally discriminated against in the country i love and believe in has reached a point that I say this situation is wrong. I know it deep in my heart. I suppose I could let it pass if it were simply for myself, but because I have a family I cannot help but stand up for my family; I cannot help but want to protect them, and I will give my life if I have to to ensure our equality.
I also stand up for LBGT youth who commit suicide because they are hated being gay, or thought to be. This hate is wrong. The American evangelical movement who are complicit in the upcoming vote on the murder of Gays and the inprisonment of their family members who do not turn them in is part of the lobbying efforts by those who funneled monies to srtip away and deny our rights.
Thank you for your perspective, but I am going to speak out for justice and equality. For many, it is a matter of life and death.”

“I affirm that we do not live in a theocracy, and this fact may perhaps be lost on you, but many rights you have now are because we are Americans. In the late 18th century when our constition was written, the framers had a education that reminded them of the tyranny of religious wars that plagued the European continent, and devastated England. It was because of religious tryranny that my family came to this country, where my ancestor was born in Philadelphia in 1638.
My family is just as good as any other, and it is wrong that we are discriminated by law.
Our marriage is true, and I know that the promise of America will call us married like other couples. This will be not be beause of un-american arguents for your religious beliefs to deny my family equality: me, my partner our daughter and two grandchildren.”

“I understand what you are saying, but the tide has changed. There is a "that was then and this is now" feeling that i hear from other gay families. If the Democrats do not support us, then they will not have our support. There is nothing more important than equality: this hits us directly, where we live and who we are.
The old idea that we have "no other place to go" has long been used to dismiss LGBT people.
I think that we are now seeing ordinary tax paying gay citizens saying they have had enough, the country has only begun to see who we are now that we are standing up.”

I wonder about posters who see a gay issue post and cannot wait to jump in and put my family down, or insist with twisted logic that my family is not deserving of equality. Also, the very same posters who hate gay people and wish to ensure they have legal in-equality have other issues...s cratch below the surface is a need to put others down, to diminish other people. it is pathetic, but also dangerous.
I appreciate your strong voice and courage for human justice and dignity.”

“Hi FTracey!
I think you submitted a comment that you felt was reasonable, and I respect that so I will try to respond in kind. Domestic partnerships that are available now have none of the same equality with marriages.
Beyond that, in practical way by writing on employment forms, medical forms and so many other areas where you state that you have a "domestic partnership" is implied in the real world that you are gay. This means that you have no privacy and have to "come out" in every instance. Considering the historic predjudice thay gays have experienced, there are credible reasons not wishing to do this in every instance. Also, it is not unkown that in doing so means you place your family in physical danger.
Also, this means that there are the "good" straight families and the 'bad" gay families, instead of simply families. We all know what "married" means.
Now, you should know that this is about real people. When people make comments about my family it is deeply personal. I do not have a cause, I have a life. Anyone who attempts to prevent my families equality is attacking me and my partner, our daughter and our two grandchildren. So with that perspective, perhaps you may see why I am standing up and speaking out.”

“The term, "separate but equal," was always a lie. The racist who promoted it never really wanted African Americans treated equally. Everyone, with a wink and nod, knew that. But its opposite, that "separate can never be equal," is also a lie. If that were true then men and women would share the same public toilets and affirmative action would not exist. Domestic partnerships were invented by LGBT folk to obtain the benefits of marriage when most of us viewed marriage as a discredited patriarchal institution. Comprehensive domestic partnerships and civil unions are now specifically designed to avoid any inequalities. This painstaking legislative word-smithing gives lie to the notion that separate cannot be equal.
All civil rights struggles have had a series of steps and compromises along the way. Our struggle is no different. But, what if I am wrong and separate is not equal? What if comprehensive domestic partnerships are only "almost" equal? At this point in time, I would still love to be "almost" equal because, as of today, we are nowhere near equal! Let us get to equality (or almost equality) first. Once we have achieved that, we can start to worry about possible inequalities. We may not find any. Until then, it is just academic ruminations. (Commissions in New Jersey and Vermont "proving" that civil unions were not equal to marriage were cleverly stacked with marriage-only advocates whose conclusions had been decided upon before each commission met.)”
