“Try going to an independant movie festival some time. You'd be surprised how many Hollywood productions were simply bought out from smaller unknown productions and given the distribution wide enough to make a name for the movie and actors in it”

“When an able bodied actor portrays a disabled character, there is mocking involved, when the able bodied actor is not ABLE to see things and do things from the disabled perspective. That play is going to lose my business the moment I see a disabled, supposedly paralyzed character reach down and scratch an itch or react to an insect bite in an area of the body where they are not paralyzed.

Can YOU stand on stage and deliver a monolog and not react if you're stung by a bee? I dont know anyone who can, and the moment an actor does that, he breaks character and eliminates all believability”

“It's about money and the fact that the producers believe that a no name actress who is actually disabled will not have the same level of ability to act as a sighted/hearing actor. There will never BE a blind/deaf star of equivalent *name*, because blind/deaf (and other disability) actors are not given the chance to prove their skills. And that *IS* discrimination, even if it's unconscious.

and the whole "open your own all blind show" thing was already tried. It was called Separate but Equal, and SCOTUS has already deemed that unconstitutional

And the gamble of a play or movie's success or failure is not dependant on it having big names. It depends on having good people in it, who draw crowds who are active and engaged enough to spread the word and *make* a no name actor into a "name" actor”

“I *do* know who Abigail Breslin is, and, quite frankly, she is just another one of the Dakota Fanning style pretty faces with a lot of potential, who did very well in one not so good movie.

Of course most people consider me an elitist snob because I avoid Hollywood cash cow blockbusters, for the most part”

“Or we just have higher standards of what "Good" cinema is. Good cinema does not come out of Big Hollywood production companies. Most goof cinema is restricted to smaller independant production companies who produce movies with great stories who do not have the intent of being a cash cow.”

“And of course they are in business to make money. But they don't take into consideration the money making potential of catering to the disabled community who could rally dozens or hundreds of people who would want to support a business that is disabled friendly.

Or put another way, able bodied people's money is more valuable than disabled people's money, even if more disabled people would give the play business”

“Well, for one thing, they use terms like Handicapped, without having any clue as to where the term comes from. And beyond that, even if you use an acceptable term, able bodied people base their decisions on unfounded assumptions and preconceived notions of a disabled person's abillities for a given job. It's not just acting, it's every sector of business who are allowed to discriminate based on appearances”

“This is not about political correctness. I don't care if people call it hearing and sight impaired or blind and deaf. This is entirely about the stigma that is set upon the disabled that we are incapable of performing to the level of a Broadway production, without one single shred of proof. It is about the discriminatory practices in general of society who think "it's okay, they're just acting. I won't have to deal with this for too long", then they can go back to their sheltered little life and forget about the realities that there ARE people with disabilities in society.

And I agree, Affirmative action has no place in the arts, at the same time, if society believes that we do not have the ability to perform, we will never be given the chance to perform and prove them wrong, so sometimes we have to be aggressive with our demand to be given a fair shot at something we deserve”

Paw1 replied on Oct 30, 2009 at 09:58:21

“Don't take this the wrong way, PS, but this isn't about stigma or discrimination either. It's about money. It is the producer's responsibility to do whatever it takes to return as much to the show's investors as possible. If there were a blind star of equivalent talent and drawing power, my assumption is that person would have gotten the role.

If you want your "fair shot", so to speak, ther's nothing really stopping you and those who feel like you from raising enough money to open your own all-blind production of this or any other show you want to. Unitl then, it's inappropriate to ask this producer to gamble his investors' money on blind cast principals with little or no drawing power.”

“I tried to be clear in my post that I felt that any actor, able or otherwise, should be afforded an equal shot at any part. If anyone was discounted merely because they had a disability, that is reprehensible.

I don't doubt that discrimination against handicapped actors is a reality, I I sincerely hope that real progress is made to rectify that injustice.

If my previous opinion left the impression that I was unsympathetic to anyone's rights, it was unintended.”

“You're right, there isn't (Yet), which means that this play was put on purely for capitalistic reasons, not artistic reasons, and as an aspiring writer, I find that offfensive that they care more about the famous big name than they do about being true to the character and story”

“On what do you base your assumption that there are no blind/deaf actresses in their early teens who would be capable of performing this role? Is it your preconceived notion of the difficulties of acting with these disabilities, or do you know the entire width and breadth of actors in New York City, and across the country, and you have not yet met someone who you *believe* (without any proof) that can not play the role?

It is those exact preconceived notions that has allowed there to not be any disabled actors playing disabled parts to begin with.”

“*IF* the actor did extensive research on the mindset and psychology and psychiatry of a mass murderer, then okay, a mentally stable person can play someone who is not mentally stable. But there are thousands of examples of serial killers in the media and on record for an actor to gain knowledge from. There is not that same level of "back story" yet for the disabled, who are still marginalized by MSM”

I can not tell you the number of times I have been in a situation where people have asked me (paraphrasing) "are you like that guy in Born on the 4th of July?" and I have to tell the person that, no, I am nothing like that character at all, and have to watch their face sink as their preconceived notions, based on one tiny similarity (both being wheelchair bound) is crushed under reality”

“Don't be so sure about that. Odds are high that the producers approached Abigail for the role because of her name and her previous body of work, and based her ability to perform this role on her previous work.

She is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, thus a guaranteed money maker, and I suspect the art of the performance is secondary to the producer's bottom line”

Rather than getting your panties in a bunch, you should be glad that an actress of her merit was cast and will make it possible for a remarkable story of triumph to be told.”

“To your comment to me which was apparently deleted.

Actually, playing a cancer patient is one of the few cases where it's okay for the able bodied to play the sick, because the illness is largely invisible.

And, you're right, it is about believability. Is the actor believable? And if the actor on stage is playing a disabled character, someone wheelchair bound and presumably paralyzed from the waist down, and in the middle of a monologue, that actor reaches to scratch an itch, or respond to a bee sting in a place where he/she is supposed to be paralyzed, he's lost all believability”
