“Keep your friends close... and Pat B closer.”

“Kinda funny. Who knows what trouble Pat B would be stirring up if they cut him loose. I always liked how Rachel made him cringe by saying, "It's Pat!" like he was the SNL character.”
Who Lost the Earth?

“Reading "HOT, FLAT AND CROWDED" by Friedman and am increasingly aware of many important facts regarding our climate, energy production, distribution and consumption as well as numbers on the global population. Pop. 1950 = 3 billion, 2000 = 6 billion, 2050 (or sooner) = 9 billion with the largest percentage in history of humanity entering the middle (major consumer) class. The impact of 3 billion more people and expected power consumption alone is something of which to be acutely.aw are. Read why the author refers to the ENERGY CLIMATE ERA (aka E.C.E.).”
Senate to Middle Class: Drop Dead

“Why is this an EASY target? And does that give a free pass because it is obvious and easy?
As for my Great Grandparents, they were as are all Americans, immigrants. But they assimilated to the language and culture as fast as was humanly possible. They gave up the old language as fast as possible to let the prevailing culture know they are here to stay. I am no less proud than anyone of my heritage but don't fly the flag of another country as a reminder to all of where my real loyalty lies. One sees, in South Florida, all the flags adorned on cars from so many countries but fail to realize that NOT flying the American flag ABOVE (or next to) it is an insult to all those, to whom this is our ONLY country.
These recent immigrants are my friends but they know, as I have told them, that failing to adapt to our culture (with American-English as it's official language) is an insult to the sacrifices my family made as well as countless millions of others. I have nothing against foreigners who desire to assimilate to THIS country and not try to bring the culture of the old country here. I shared an office space with another company where American-English was not desired but only spoken when absolutely necessary.”

“If one wants to see an influx of cheap foreign talent, go to South Florida and look around. Domestically raised "cattle" (read: engineers) cannot compete with this influx of low cost talent. As soon as one gets a foothold an open call goes out to the old country and the gates open up. Having met many of the people, I can attest that they are nice enough and good family people. BUT, no matter how much a domestically trained engineer makes, they will work cheaper. You go low, they go lower. More aggressive and more hungry for the job.
Off topic: how much income is being sent out of this country back to the old country?
There must be an Economist out there who understands this cycle. The idea of having full benefits and a retirement plan, seems like something from a bygone era. Can government legislation really protect this situation? Methinks not.”

“Neil,
How about calling it REV (recharging electric vehicle) [ or REVs ] ?
Oh... and thanks for all that great music ! Some of us want to know what kind of music player the LinkVolt will have. iPhone dock? usb cable dock?
"...An old friend showed up at the door
The mile posts flying by
He said come on, I said what for
He said I'll show you why
I got a call from north of here
They said some girl's broke down
There's good money in it
for you and me
If we can get her back to town
She's somewhere north of Barstow
Lost on 66
An old Trans Am
by the side of the road
That needs a headlight fixed...."”

How To Work With People Who Won't Do Their Job
Commented Jul 27, 2008 at 13:09:29 in Living
“QUESTION FOR DEBATE: Can ONE person only truly do the work of ONE person?
In the phrase, "I do the work of two people", does it follow that one person can only do the work of one person? If one person does a lot of work, isn't it really just the potential maximum work that ONE person can accomplish? And who works to the maximum capacity of a human being each and every day? We have seen through forced labor, slave labor, that in relatively short amounts of time massive things can be built or accomplished. Managers often get "more work" out of an employee by motivation. Not much compares to a positively motivated employee or a self-motivated employee, to do the work of THREE (?).
Is there some practical unit of measurement of just what is an amount of work ? Some jobs are easier to note productivity, others not so easy. If I choose to be much smarter, than a fellow worker, and use my intelligence to save myself and the company much time and effort, does that allow for me to take my day just that much easier or does a greater workload just naturally fill the void. To me it seems like the latter. There are ordinary horses and there are "workhorses". Some people just look the part and know how to make something like (though truly valuable) filling the copy machine with a ream of paper look like curing a disease.

Tuesday's Biggest Loser: Tim Russert (And All The Other TV Blowhards)
Commented May 08, 2008 at 08:39:04 in Politics
“When they say "Meet the Press" ... do they mean that Tim Russert is THE PRESS? Given how much press exists today, is Tim representative of it? If so, my only comfort is that... at times like these, it is good to know that in the past there have been times likes these... or have there?”
